Multi-omics reveal microbial functional traits and antifungal metabolites associated with lower Pseudogymnoascus destructans loads in bat cave soils.

White-nose syndrome, caused by Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), is a major fungal disease threatening hibernating bats. Cave soils can serve as environmental reservoirs for Pd, yet the microbial and biochemical mechanisms underlying naturally low Pd burdens in some cave environments remain poorly understood. Here, we integrated soil microbiome profiling, metagenomics, metabolomics, multi-omics network analysis, and in vitro validation to investigate the ecological and functional basis of differential Pd loads in hibernating bat caves in Northeast China. The three caves shared cold, humid, an

A multi-step approach: Coupling of biodegradation and UV photocatalytic oxidation TiO2 for the treatment of naphthenic acid fraction compounds in oil sands process-affected water.

Bitumen extraction in Alberta's oil sands region uses large volumes of water, leading to an abundance of oil sands process-affected water (OSPW). OSPW contains naphthenic acid fraction compounds (NAFCs) which have been found to contribute to OSPW toxicity. This study utilized a multistep treatment, coupling biological degradation with UV photocatalytic oxidation, and nutrient addition to boost the native microbial community's degradation capacity. OSPW initially contained 40-42 mg/L NAFCs with a toxicity of 3.8-3.9 TU. Initial biodegradation (Step 1) was used to remove the easily biodegradable

Intestinal and hepatic contributions to the pharmacokinetic interaction between gamithromycin and rifampicin after single-dose and multiple-dose administration in healthy foals.

BACKGROUND: Standard treatment of foals with severe abscessing lung infection caused by Rhodococcus equi using rifampicin and a macrolide antibiotic can be compromised by extensive inhibition and/or induction of drug metabolising enzymes (e.g. CYP3A4) and transport proteins (e.g. P-glycoprotein), as has been shown for rifampicin and clarithromycin. The combination of rifampicin with the new, poorly metabolised gamithromycin, a long-acting analogue of azithromycin and tulathromycin with lower pharmacokinetic interaction potential, might be a suitable alternative. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the ph

Malacoplakia of the tongue: a case report and clinicopathologic review of 6 cases.

BACKGROUND: Extra-urogenital tract malacoplakia is uncommon, with tongue malacoplakia being exceptionally rare. The nonspecific clinical presentation and variable histologic patterns can make recognition of this lesion and separation from other lesions challenging. There are only a few reported cases in the English literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five case reports of tongue malacoplakia were compiled from the literature (MedLine 1960-2008) and integrated with this case report. RESULTS: The patients included 4 males and 2 females, ranging in age from 9 to 98 years (mean, 64 years). Patient

Amoebae as training grounds for microbial pathogens.

Grazing of amoebae on microorganisms represents one of the oldest predator-prey dynamic relationships in nature. It represents a genetic "melting pot" for an ancient and continuous multi-directional inter- and intra-kingdom horizontal gene transfer between amoebae and its preys, intracellular microbial residents, endosymbionts, and giant viruses, which has shaped the evolution, selection, and adaptation of microbes that evade degradation by predatory amoeba. Unicellular phagocytic amoebae are thought to be the ancient ancestors of macrophages with highly conserved eukaryotic processes. Selecti

Cryptosporidium infection induced the dropping of SCFAS and dysbiosis in intestinal microbiome of Tibetan pigs.

The infection of Cryptosporidium in pigs causes digestive system ailments, diarrhea and weight loss serving as an economic burden, especially in newborn animals. The bacterial fermentation products of short-chain fatty acids have important roles in immune function, microbiota regulation, osmotic balance and metabolism. However, till now little knowledge is available about the effect of Cryptosporidium infection on microbiota and SCFAs in plateau pigs. Hence, we performed this study to explore the response of microbiota and SCFAs in the natural infection of Cryptosporidium in Tibetan pigs. Cryp

Abscisic acid metabolizing rhizobacteria decrease ABA concentrations in planta and alter plant growth.

Although endogenous phytohormones such as abscisic acid (ABA) regulate root growth, and many rhizobacteria can modulate root phytohormone status, hitherto there have been no reports of rhizobacteria mediating root ABA concentrations and growth by metabolising ABA. Using a selective ABA-supplemented medium, two bacterial strains were isolated from the rhizosphere of rice (Oryza sativa) seedlings grown in sod-podzolic soil and assigned to Rhodococcus sp. P1Y and Novosphingobium sp. P6W using partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phenotypic patterns by the GEN III MicroPlate test. Although strain

Recombinant Arthrobacter β-1, 3-glucanase as a potential effector molecule for paratransgenic control of Chagas disease.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease is most often transmitted to humans by Trypanosoma cruzi infected triatomine bugs, and remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in Central and South America. Control of Chagas disease has relied mainly on vector eradication. However, development of insect resistance has prompted us to develop a paratransgenic strategy to control vectorial transmission of T. cruzi. Here, the potential role of recombinant endoglucanases as anti-trypanosomal agents for paratransgenic application is examined. The surface of T. cruzi is covered by a thick coat of mucin-like

Macrophage-related diseases of the gut: a pathologist's perspective.

The resident macrophages of the gastrointestinal tract represent the largest population of macrophages in the human body and are usually located in the subepithelial lamina propria. This strategic location guarantees a first-line defense to the huge numbers of potentially harmful bacteria and antigenic stimuli that are present in the intestinal lumen. In non-inflamed mucosa, macrophages phagocytose and kill microbes in the absence of an inflammatory response. However, in the event of an epithelial breach and/or microbial invasion, new circulating monocytes and lymphocytes will be recruited to

Crude Oil Degradation in Temperatures Below the Freezing Point by Bacteria from Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Arctic Soils and the Genome Analysis of Sphingomonas sp. AR_OL41.

Intensive human activity in the Arctic region leads to hydrocarbon pollution of reservoirs and soils. Isolation of bacteria capable of growing at low temperatures and degrading oil and petroleum products is of scientific and practical value. The aim of this work was to study the physiology and growth in oil at temperatures below 0 °C of four strains of bacteria of the genera Pseudomonas, Rhodococcus, Arthrobacter, and Sphingomonas-previously isolated from diesel-contaminated soils of the Franz Josef Land archipelago-as well as genomic analysis of the Sphingomonas sp. AR_OL41 strain. The studie

Focal pulmonary lesions in patients with AIDS: percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsy.

The authors performed percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsy (PTNB) in 13 patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and previously undiagnosed focal pulmonary lesions. Findings with PTNB were diagnostic in 11 of 13 cases. Complications included minimal hemoptysis in one case and small pneumothoraxes in two cases, one of which required chest tube drainage. The authors did not experience the high complication rate reported previously by some authors who used this diagnostic procedure in AIDS patients. Investigating the resistome, taxonomic composition, and mobilome of bacterial communities in hospital wastewaters of Metro Manila using a shotgun metagenomics approach.

We profiled antibiotic resistance genes, bacterial communities, and mobile genetic elements in untreated hospital wastewater from three tertiary hospitals in Metro Manila using shotgun metagenomic sequencing. The resistome analysis revealed high abundances of genes known to confer resistance against sulfonamides (sul1, sul2), aminoglycosides (aadS), and macrolides/streptogramins (msrE, mphE). High-risk resistance genes were also detected, including those known to confer resistance to β-lactams (blaOXA, blaTEM, blaGES, blaNDM, blaKPC), colistins (mcr-5), and tetracyclines [tet(C), tet(A), tet(L
