Polysialic acid in the rat brainstem and thoracolumbar spinal cord: Distribution, cellular location, and comparison with mouse.

Polysialic acid (polySia), a homopolymer of α2,8-linked glycans, is a posttranslational modification on a few glycoproteins, most commonly in the brain, on the neural cell adhesion molecule. Most research in the adult central nervous system has focused on its expression in higher brain regions, where its distribution coincides with regions known to exhibit high levels of synaptic plasticity. In contrast, scant attention has been paid to the expression of polySia in the hindbrain. The main aims of the study were to examine the distribution of polySia immunoreactivity in the brainstem and thorac

Dental occlusion and body balance: A question of environmental constraints?

BACKGROUND: In the past few years, growing interest was given to the relationship between the dental occlusion and the body balance. While most research focused on this relationship at static conditions, it is evident that the contribution of the sensory information for balance control is different depending on the environmental constraints. RESEARCH QUESTION: The aim of the present paper was to elucidate whether the stomatognathic system (SS) contributes differently on body balance regulation according to the presence of external disturbances. METHODS: Literature regarding the different sou

Noise-induced hearing loss: Neuropathic pain via Ntrk1 signaling.

Severe noise-induced damage to the inner ear leads to auditory nerve fiber degeneration thereby reducing the neural input to the cochlear nucleus (CN). Paradoxically, this leads to a significant increase in spontaneous activity in the CN which has been linked to tinnitus, hyperacusis and ear pain. The biological mechanisms that lead to an increased spontaneous activity are largely unknown, but could arise from changes in glutamatergic or GABAergic neurotransmission or neuroinflammation. To test this hypothesis, we unilaterally exposed rats for 2h to a 126dB SPL narrow band noise centered at 12

A non-canonical pathway from cochlea to brain signals tissue-damaging noise.

Intense noise damages the cochlear organ of Corti, particularly the outer hair cells (OHCs) [1]; however, this epithelium is not innervated by nociceptors of somatosensory ganglia, which detect damage elsewhere in the body. The only sensory neurons innervating the organ of Corti originate from the spiral ganglion, roughly 95% of which innervate exclusively inner hair cells (IHCs) [2-4]. Upon sound stimulation, IHCs release glutamate to activate AMPA-type receptors on these myelinated type-I neurons, which carry the neuronal signals to the cochlear nucleus. The remaining spiral ganglion cells (

Altered connectivity of the balance processing network after tongue stimulation in balance-impaired individuals.

Some individuals with balance impairment have hypersensitivity of the motion-sensitive visual cortices (hMT+) compared to healthy controls. Previous work showed that electrical tongue stimulation can reduce the exaggerated postural sway induced by optic flow in this subject population and decrease the hypersensitive response of hMT+. Additionally, a region within the brainstem (BS), likely containing the vestibular and trigeminal nuclei, showed increased optic flow-induced activity after tongue stimulation. The aim of this study was to understand how the modulation induced by tongue stimulatio

HSV trafficking and development of gene therapy vectors with applications in the nervous system.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is a neurotropic double-stranded DNA virus that causes cold sores, keratitis, and rarely encephalitis in humans. Nonpathogenic HSV-1 gene transfer vectors have been generated by elimination of viral functions necessary for replication. The life cycle of the native virus includes replication in epithelial cells at the site of initial inoculation followed by retrograde axonal transport to the nuclei of sensory neurons innervating the area of cutaneous primary infection. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of the molecular basis for HSV cell

Distribution of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunoreactivity in the central nervous system of a chondrostean, the siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baeri).

All studies to date of cholinergic systems of bony fishes have been done in teleosts. To gain further insight into the evolution of the cholinergic systems of bony fishes, we have studied the brain of a chondrostean fish, the Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baeri, Brandt), by using an antibody against choline acetyltransferase (ChAT). This study showed the presence of ChAT-immunoreactive (ChAT-ir) neurons in the preoptic region (parvocellular and magnocellular preoptic nuclei and suprachiasmatic nucleus), the periventricular and tuberal hypothalamus, the saccus vasculosus, the dorsal thalamus, an

Cutaneous representations of the hand and other body parts in the cuneate nucleus of a primate, and some relationships to previously described cortical representations.

Dynamic properties of primate somatosensory maps are dependent on normal central adjacencies of cutaneous representations. The cuneate nucleus is an important brainstem processing center of cutaneous information. Surprisingly, there are no descriptions of functional representations of the skin in the primate cuneate nucleus; as a result, the relationships of functional representations at the brainstem level and other levels of the somatosensory neuraxis remain obscure. The present neurophysiological study indicates that the main cuneate nucleus of marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) contains

Localization of mercury in CNS of the rat. III. Oral administration of methylmercuric chloride (CH3HgCl).

The distribution and cellular localization of mercury in the in situ brain and upper cervical spinal cord of adult Wistar rats were studied at various time intervals after oral administration of methylmercuric chloride (CH3HgCl; 20 mg x liter-1). Coronal sections of the brain and transverse sections of the cervical spinal cord were prepared for visualization of the mercury by the autometallographic silver-enhancement method. Following mercury administration there was a latent period before the metal appeared in the tissue. Mercury staining was first detected after 10 days in cell bodies of fiv

Transient GABA immunoreactivity in cranial nerves of the chick embryo.

The distribution and time course of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) immunoreactivity was investigated in the cranium of the chick embryo from 2 to 16 days of incubation (E2-16). A fraction of nerve fibers transiently stains GABA-positive in all cranial motor nerves and in the vestibular nerve. Cranial motor nerves stain GABA-positive from E4 to E11, including neuromuscular junctions at E8-11; labeled fibers are most frequent in the motor trigeminal root (E6-9.5). Substantial GABA staining is present from E4 to E10 in a subpopulation (1-2%) of vestibular ganglion cells. Their peripheral processe

Histochemical and immunocytochemical localization of nitric oxide synthase in the central nervous system of the goldfish, carassius auratus.

The distribution of the neuronal type of nitric oxide synthase in the goldfish brain and spinal cord was investigated via NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry and immunocytochemistry using an antiserum raised against the purified mammalian enzyme. Many structures, including magnocellular neurosecretory cells, motoneurons, mesencephalic trigeminal neurons, and radial glial fibers, were stained by the NADPH-diaphorase reaction but were not immunoreactive. This nonspecific NADPH-diaphorase activity was strongly reduced after preincubation of the sections. Therefore, when sections were first reacted fo

[Manual treatment of the cervical spinal column for tinnitus after acute hearing loss - a case report].

Tinnitus is one of the 20 most common reasons why patients aged 45-64 years consult a general practitioner in Germany. In the literature a correlation is claimed between disease patterns of the cervical spinal column and nuclei of cerebral nerves. In the case report presented here, a 30-year-old female patient with acute tinnitus after acute hearing loss was cured from her tinnitus after a single manual medical treatment at C0/C1, which supports the correlation claimed. If cervical spine diseases should therefore regularly be included in the differential diagnoses of acute tinnitus is a matter

[Age-Related Changes in Occlusion and the Clinical Management and Prevention Strategies].

Occlusion refers to the contact relationship between the upper and lower teeth. Its biomechanical properties influence motor function, most often in the orofacial and cervical regions, and the patient's psychological well-being as well. In this review, we summarized age-related changes in occlusion and the corresponding clinical management and preventive strategies from three perspectives-the functional characteristics of normal occlusion and their age-related changes, the effects of abnormal occlusion on health and the potential neurophysiological mechanisms involved, and age-related changes

[The nucleus tractus solitarius: neuroanatomic, neurochemical and functional aspects].

The nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) has long been considered as the first central relay for gustatory and visceral afferent informations only. However, data obtained during the past ten years, with neuroanatomical, biochemical and electrophysiological techniques, clearly demonstrate that the NTS is a structure with a high degree of complexity, which plays, at the medullary level, a key role in several integrative processes. The NTS, located in the dorsomedial medulla, is a structure of small size containing a limited number of neurons scattered in a more or less dense fibrillar plexus. The dis

Release of immunoreactive substance P in the trigeminal brain stem nuclear complex evoked by chemical stimulation of the nasal mucosa and the dura mater encephali--a study with antibody microprobes.

In order to study a possible involvement of substance P in the processing of chemonociceptive input from the nasal mucosa and the dura mater encephali in the spinal trigeminal, the release of immunoreactive substance P was measured in the trigeminal brain stem nuclear complex in anaesthetized rats. Microprobes coated with antibody to substance P were inserted into the lateral area of the brain stem up to 1 mm posterior to the obex corresponding to the trigeminal subnucleus caudalis. When the nasal mucosa was stimulated by topical administration of mustard oil (1% and 5%) into the nostrils, imm

Expression of the neuropeptide Y Y1 receptor in the CNS of rat and of wild-type and Y1 receptor knock-out mice. Focus on immunohistochemical localization.

The distribution of neuropeptide Y (NPY) Y1 receptor-like immunoreactivity (Y1R-LI) has been studied in detail in the CNS of rat using a rabbit polyclonal antibody against the C-terminal 13 amino acids of the rat receptor protein. The indirect immunofluorescence technique with tyramide signal amplification has been employed. For specificity and comparative reasons Y1 knock-out mice and wild-type controls were analyzed. The distribution of Y1R mRNA was also studied using in situ hybridization. A limited comparison between Y1R-LI and NPY-LI was carried out.A widespread and abundant distribution

The effects of ibuprofen and the neurokinin-1 receptor antagonist GR205171A on Fos expression in the ferret trigeminal nucleus following tooth pulp stimulation.

We have developed a model to study central changes following inflammation of the tooth pulp in the ferret and have examined Fos expression in the trigeminal nucleus following stimulation of non-inflamed and inflamed tooth pulps. The aim of this study was to establish the ability of this model to predict analgesic efficacy in clinical studies of inflammatory pain. We addressed this by assessing the effects of the neurokinin-1 receptor antagonist GR205171A and ibuprofen on Fos expression following stimulation of the inflamed pulp and comparing this with known analgesic efficacy. Adult ferrets we

Effects of centrally administered vasopressin on orofacial pain perception in rats.

Vasopressin (AVP) appears in the cerebrospinal fluid and plays an important role in nociceptive modulation in the central nervous system. The effect of increased concentration of AVP in the cerebrospinal fluid on the excitability of the hypoglossal nerve nucleus was investigated. The experiments were carried out on rats under chloralose anesthesia. Amplitudes of the retractory evoked tongue jerks (ETJ) of the outstretched tongue during the perfusion of cerebral ventricles with solutions containing AVP or its antagonists and also opioid and serotonin antagonists were recorded. Association of Intranasal and Neurogenic Dural Inflammation in Experimental Acute Rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Nasal cavity and sinus disorders, such as allergic rhinitis, rhinosinusitis, or certain anatomical defects, are often associated with transient or ongoing headaches. On the other hand, migraine headache patients often exhibit pain referral over the area of nasal sinuses and typical nasal autonomic symptoms involving congestion and rhinorrhea. Mechanism for convergence of nasal or sinus disorders and headaches is unknown. Herein, we examined the association of sino-nasal inflammatory pain with common preclinical indicators of trigeminovascular system activation such as dural neuroge

Implantable Electronic Stimulation Devices from Head to Sacrum: Imaging Features and Functions.

Electronic stimulation devices are implanted in various locations in the body to decrease pain, modulate nerve function, or stimulate various end organs. The authors describe these devices using a craniocaudal approach, first describing deep brain stimulation (DBS) devices and ending with sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) devices. The radiology-relevant background information for each device and its imaging appearance are also described. These devices have a common design theme and include the following components: (a) a pulse generator that houses the battery and control electronics, (b) an insu
