BRIDGE to liver health: implementation of a group telehealth psychoeducational program through shared medical appointments for MASLD management.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) represents a significantly costly and increasingly prevalent disease, with treatment focused on lifestyle intervention. Integrating education and behavioral health into clinical care offers opportunities to engage and empower patients to prevent progression of liver disease. We describe the design and implementation of Behavioral Resources and Intervention through Digital Group Education (BRIDGE), a 6-session group telehealth program led by advanced practice providers (APPs) in 90-min shared medical appointments (SMAs

The IDEA3 pilot trial: feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of an online adaptation of an evidence-based intervention for campus sexual assault prevention.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced Assess, Acknowledge, Act (EAAA) is the only intervention shown in a randomized controlled trial to reduce sexual violence victimization against undergraduate women by 50%. EAAA is an in-person, small-group intervention led by two trained peer facilitators over four three-hour sessions. Implementation cost and train-the-trainer complexities have led to limited uptake with relatively few institutions implementing the intervention, despite its efficacy. Adapting EAAA for online delivery would enable use of a centralized facilitator pool, dramatically cutting cost and complexi

The effect of a micro-visual intervention on the accelerated recovery of patients with kinesiophobia after total knee replacement during neo-coronary pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: The global neo-coronary pneumonia epidemic has increased the workload of healthcare institutions in various countries and directly affected the physical and psychological recovery of the vast majority of patients requiring hospitalization in China. We anticipate that post-total knee arthroplasty kinesiophobia may have an impact on patients' postoperative pain scores, knee function, and ability to care for themselves in daily life. The purpose of this study is to conduct a micro-video intervention via WeChat to verify the impact of this method on the rapid recovery of patients with

Telerehabilitation for chronic respiratory disease.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary rehabilitation is a proven, effective intervention for people with chronic respiratory diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and bronchiectasis. However, relatively few people attend or complete a program, due to factors including a lack of programs, issues associated with travel and transport, and other health issues. Traditionally, pulmonary rehabilitation is delivered in-person on an outpatient basis at a hospital or other healthcare facility (referred to as centre-based pulmonary rehabilitation). Newer, altern

Investigating the effects of COVID-19 on global male sex work populations: a longitudinal study of digital data.

OBJECTIVES: Recommendations of 'social distancing' and home quarantines to combat the global COVID-19 pandemic have implications for sex and intimacy, including sex work. This study examined the effects of COVID-19 on male sex work globally and investigated how men who sold sex responded to and engaged with the virus in the context of work. METHODS: This study made use of an existing database of deidentified data extracted from the online profiles maintained by male sex workers on a large, international website. Website engagement metrics were calculated for the periods before (September to D

Long-Term Care Residents' Experiences of Telemedicine - Video Consultations With Their Regular Physician in Rural Northern Sweden.

IntroductionDemand for long-term care is increasing globally due to ageing populations and workforce shortages, particularly in rural areas. Video consultations (VC) may support interactions between residents and healthcare professionals and gained prominence during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, research on long-term care residents' experiences of VC remains limited, and ethical challenges have been highlighted. This study aims to explore residents' experiences of VC.MethodsA qualitative study with an inductive approach was conducted. Interviews (n=10) were carried out with long-term care re

Impact of telemedicine on the practice of pediatric cardiology in community hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Tele-echocardiography has the potential to bring real-time diagnoses to neonatal facilities without in-house pediatric cardiologists. Many neonates in rural areas, smaller cities, and community hospitals do not have immediate access to pediatric sonographers or echocardiogram interpretation by pediatric cardiologists. This can result in suboptimal echocardiogram quality, delay in initiation of medical intervention, unnecessary patient transport, and increased medical expenditures. Telemedicine has been used with increased frequency to improve efficiency of pediatric cardiology care

Experiences of telemedicine in neurological out-patient clinics during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to rapid changes in the delivery of medical care worldwide. The main objective of this survey was to investigate the initial experiences of neurologists with the use of telemedicine for different neurological conditions during the first phase of the COVID-19. METHODS: All hospital-based neurologists in Norway (n = 400) were invited to a questionnaire survey by e-mail in April 2020. The study focused on telemedicine and all questions were answered with regard to the first weeks of the pandemic lockdown in Norway. RESULTS: One-hundred and thirty-five ne

Online interventions for dementia caregiver burden and self-efficacy: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There is growing interest in online psychosocial interventions to address burden and self-efficacy among informal caregivers of people with dementia. However, their effectiveness remains unclear, especially given ongoing debates and limited evidence of online delivery modes. We aimed to synthesize evidence on these online psychosocial interventions, highlight the current state of research, and identify priorities for future studies. METHODS: A systematic review with meta-analyses was conducted. We included randomized controlled trials comparing online psychosocial i

Medical Learner Perspectives on Restorative Practices to Address Medical Racism.

IMPORTANCE: The use of restorative practices may be an alternative approach to responding to patients and families harmed by medical racism. Little research has explored its implementation in health care settings or the perspectives of residents and fellows (ie, medical learners) regarding its use in academic clinical settings. OBJECTIVE: To elicit perspectives from medical learners on using restorative practices to address patient and family concerns about racism and other identity-based harms in the health care context. Supporting Evidence-based Responses to Emotional Needs in Emphysema (SERENE): protocol for a randomized, open-label mechanistic trial comparing Coping Skills Training and disease-specific education for depressive symptoms conducted in United States health systems.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms and anxiety are highly prevalent among people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), strongly associated with poor outcomes, and rarely recognized or treated. Integrating families into interventions may amplify supportive care treatment effects and overcome common challenges, yet this strategy is understudied. The Supporting Evidence-based Responses to Emotional Needs in Emphysema (SERENE) trial's main objective is to identify the mechanisms through which a family-partnered Coping Skills Training (CST) reduces depressive symptoms among patients with

Barriers to Discharge for Nursing Home Residents With Serious Mental Illness.

IMPORTANCE: Nursing homes deliver rehabilitative and long-term care for people with serious medical illnesses, functional impairment, and/or cognitive impairment. The population of nursing home residents with serious mental illness (ie, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, other psychotic disorders) has grown substantially. Other than prisons and jails, nursing homes are the largest institutional care setting for adults (aged ≥18 years) with serious mental illness. Nursing home residents with serious mental illness become long-term residents despite less functional impairment, which may be a funct

The Safety of Telerehabilitation: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Telerehabilitation involves the delivery of rehabilitation services over a distance through communication technologies. In contrast to traditional in-person rehabilitation, telerehabilitation can help overcome barriers including geographic distance and facility use. There is evidence to suggest that telerehabilitation can lead to increased patient engagement and adherence to treatment plans. However, limited research exists on the association of telerehabilitation with adverse events, potentially hindering its broader adoption and use in health care. OBJECTIVES: This systematic re

Evaluating a digital hybrid training-of-trainers (TOT) approach for lay first responder trauma education in urban Nigeria during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Road traffic injuries (RTIs) are the largest contributor to the global burden of injury, and in 2016 were among the five leading causes of global disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). In regions with limited emergency medical services (EMS), training lay first responders (LFRs) has been shown to increase availability of prehospital care for RTIs, but sustainable mechanisms to scale these programs remain unstudied. METHODS: Using a training of trainers (TOT) model, a 5.5-h LFR training program was launched in Lagos, Nigeria. The course was taught in a hybrid fashion with primar

Effects of a support group leader education program jointly developed by health professionals and patients on peer leader self-efficacy among leaders of scleroderma support groups: a two-arm parallel partially nested randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: More people with rare diseases likely receive disease education and emotional and practical support from peer-led support groups than any other way. Most rare-disease support groups are delivered outside of the health care system by untrained leaders. Potential benefits may not be achieved and harms, such as dissemination of inaccurate information, may occur. Our primary objective was to evaluate the effects of a rare-disease support group leader education program, which was developed collaboratively by researchers, peer support group leaders, and patient organization leaders, comp

Effectiveness of Synchronous Telerehabilitation Versus Face-to-Face Physical Therapy in Older Adults Who Are Frail: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Older adults who are frail face significant barriers to physical activity, and innovative solutions such as synchronous telerehabilitation (STR) may provide a viable alternative to traditional face-to-face programs. However, less is known about its effectiveness compared to a face-to-face program. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare the effectiveness of an STR program versus a face-to-face physical therapy (FPT) program in the primary outcomes (lower body strength and cardiorespiratory fitness) and secondary outcomes (upper limb strength, dynamic balance, static balance, number
