BACKGROUND: Current measures of the reduced head-neck offset such as residual deformity of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) including the alpha angle, which measures the femoral head-neck sphericity but does not account for acetabular abnormalities, do not represent the true magnitude of the deformity and the mechanical consequences. The beta angle (angle between the femoral head-neck junction and acetabular rim) accounts for the morphology of both the acetabulum and femur and, thus, may be the more appropriate parameter for assessing SCFE deformity.

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) in the adolescent patient has historically shown relatively poor survivorship. This study reports the results of THA in young patients using contemporary ceramic bearings. Twenty-four THAs were performed using ceramic bearing surfaces in patients 20 years old or younger (mean, 16.4; range, 12-20). Average follow-up was 52 months (range, 25-123 months). Lateral condyle fractures are second only to supracondylar humeral fractures when it comes to pediatric elbow fractures. Aneurysmal bone cysts are associated with a high rate of recurrence. Many aneurysmal bone cysts arise near open physes or articular cartilage in skeletally immature patients. Fear of damaging these structures could cause surgeons to curette the tumors less aggressively. BACKGROUND: Little is known about the survival of total hip arthroplasty implants with bioactive coatings beyond the first 20 years. The authors aimed to report survival of a tapered hip stem fully coated with hydroxylapatite (HA) at follow-up of 25-30 years.
