INTRODUCTION: Primary peritoneal clear cell carcinoma (PPCCC) is a rare abdominal tumor, affecting 7 out of every million people. Its vague presenting signs and symptoms often lead to delayed diagnosis and poor prognosis. We present a case involving a young woman with anemia and abdominal discomfort who on further investigation had a 26-cm abdominal tumor identified to be PPCCC. Multimodal therapy with tumor debulking and chemotherapy was pursued. Given the aggressive nature of PPCCC, any clinical suspicion of peritoneal carcinoma should prompt thorough diagnostic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis, a common condition with a higher prevalence among men, has shown an increasing incidence in recent years owing to lifestyle changes. It is characterized by right lower quadrant abdominal pain, rebound tenderness, and rapid onset. Its pathogenesis is complex and potentially linked to infection, environment, and genetics. Timely intervention is crucial to prevent complications. While surgery is the primary treatment, it carries risks, including postoperative infections that may necessitate re-operation. Gram-negative bacteria release endotoxin (ETX), which induces

BACKGROUND: Abdominal surgery in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) carries an increased risk of postoperative complications. Preoperative transfusions are frequently given to decrease the risk of vasoocclusive events. However, risk factors for postoperative complications are not well-defined in the pediatric population.
METHODS: Pediatric patients with SCD undergoing common abdominal operations were identified from the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program-Pediatric (NSQIP-P) database from 2012 to 2018. Outcomes of interest were the incidence rates of 1) any complication or read

A 57-year-old man presented to the surgical oncology clinic with a mildly tender mass under his right arm. Four years prior, the patient had a melanoma removed from his right shoulder along with an ipsilateral right axillary sentinel lymph sampling. Computed tomography (CT) scan was negative for metastatic disease at that time. The patient did not undergo completion axillary node dissection and was lost to follow-up. The patient was originally from Australia, did not tan but reported multiple sunburns before age 18. He was of Irish ancestry. He denied weight gain, fever, fatigue, anorexia, or

BACKGROUND: A large proportion of patients presenting for autologous breast reconstruction have a history of prior abdominal surgeries such as obstetric, gynecologic, or general surgical procedures. The impact of prior abdominal wall violation on the ability to perform free tissue transfer from the abdomen needs to be explored and characterized. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of prior abdominal surgery on perfusion-related complications and donor-site morbidity in free tissue abdominal transfer.
METHODS: All patients who underwent abdominally based free tissue transfer for

BACKGROUND: Rarely, patchy right colonic inflammation has been observed in patients with left sided chronic ulcerative colitis (CUC), but the clinical significance of this finding is unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and pathologic features and natural history of CUC patients with left-sided colitis combined with patchy right colonic inflammation and to compare the clinical course to a control group of patients with isolated left-sided CUC.
METHODS: Twelve patients with clinically and pathologically confirmed left-sided CUC, but also with patchy right colo

Background/Objectives: Osteoporotic fractures, particularly subcapital hip fractures (SCF), pose a significant healthcare and economic burden. The routine pathological examination of resected femoral heads in such cases is common practice, aimed at identifying malignancies that may have contributed to bone fragility. This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness and clinical utility of routine femoral head pathology in patients undergoing surgical treatment for SCF. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a university-affiliated, tertiary care hospital. Patients undergoing surgica

The purpose of our study was to analyze the clinical relevance of computerized tomography (CT) in providing the diagnosis of inflammatory appendix mass (IAM) in patients with acute appendicitis. The CT images of 134 patients were reviewed. Two groups of patients were made according to the presence (group 1; n = 21) or the absence (group 2; n = 113) of IAM. Clinical signs of patients, CT features, complications at surgery, and histological examinations were noted. Inter-observer agreement was assessed by using kappa statistics. Twenty-one patients presenting with CT features of IAM were diagnos

Polyarteritis nodosa is a necrotizing vasculitis which affects small and medium-sized arteries. The clinical features of the disease vary according to the site and extent of involvement. Aneurysmal dilatation and thrombosis in the arteries of the liver and gastrointestinal tract have been reported in polyarteritis nodosa. However, rupture of the hepatic aneurysm and necrotizing appendicitis due to polyarteritis nodosa are uncommon; indeed a case in which these have occurred together has not been reported to date. In this case report, a patient with necrotizing appendicitis and hepatic aneurysm

OBJECTIVE: The transgluteal approach to abscess drainage through the greater sciatic foramen has been described in adults, but this route has not been as extensively studied in children. We performed CT-guided transgluteal percutaneous abscess drainage in seven children and assessed the results of drainage and catheter tolerance.
CONCLUSION: Transgluteal catheters are well tolerated by children, and the transgluteal route is an effective approach to selected pelvic abscesses in children.

A prospective randomised study (I) was carried out on 130 children undergoing laparotomy for perforated appendicitis. The present study evaluates the therapeutic effectiveness of different antibiotic regimens in modifying the rate of post-operative complications (intraabdominal abscess, ileus, wound infiltration or abscess). During the first year of this study two treatment groups were used. Group A consisted of 29 children treated with Sulfometrol/Trimethoprim; the rate of postoperative complications was 44.8%. Group B consisted of 36 children treated with mezlocillin, the rate of complicatio

AIM: Acute appendicitis is one of the most common pathology requiring emergency operations, and if perforated, can cause morbidity and mortality. The serum bilirubin levels were studied to see whether an elevation predicted perforation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study the medical files of 221 patients who were operated for acute appendicitis were reviewed.
RESULTS: Total and indirect bilirubin levels were significantly higher in patients with a perforated appendicitis compared with patients with simple appendicitis. Elevated serum bilirubin had a sensitivity of 50.00 (9

PURPOSE: Despite a wide spectrum of severity, perforated appendicitis in children is typically considered a single entity in outcomes studies. We performed a prospective cohort study to define a risk stratification system that correlates with outcomes and resource utilization.
METHODS: A prospective study was conducted of all children operated for perforated appendicitis between May 2015 and December 2016 at a tertiary free-standing university children's hospital. Surgical findings were classified into one of four grades of perforation: I. localized or contained perforation, II. Contained abs

BACKGROUND: Recent data suggest that laparoscopic appendicectomy (LA) in pregnancy is associated with higher rates of foetal loss when compared to open appendicectomy (OA). However, the influence of gestational age and maternal age, both recognized risk factors for foetal loss, was not assessed.
METHOD: This was a multicentre retrospective review of all pregnant patients who underwent appendicectomy for suspected appendicitis from 2000 to 2012 across seven hospitals in Australia. Perioperative data and foetal outcome were evaluated.
RESULTS: Data on 218 patients from the seven hospitals were
