The role of affect and rumination in cardiovascular recovery from stress.

This study examined the psychological processes that may impede or facilitate cardiovascular recovery. It was hypothesized that cardiovascular recovery would be hampered by negative affect and rumination, and facilitated by positive affect. In an experimental study, stress was elicited by exposing participants (N=110) to a mental arithmetic task with harassment. After the stress task, affective levels were manipulated via a movie scene with negative, neutral, or positive emotional valence, or without an affect manipulation (control condition). During the entire experiment, heart rate and systo

Does antiepileptogenesis affect sleep in genetic epileptic rats?

Recently it was established that early long lasting treatment with the anti-absence drug ethosuximide (ETX) delays the occurrence of absences and reduces depressive-like symptoms in a genetic model for absence epilepsy, rats of the WAG/Rij strain. Here it is investigated whether anti-epileptogenesis (chronic treatments with ETX for 2 and 4 months) affects REM sleep in this model. Four groups of weaned male WAG/Rij rats were treated with ETX for 4 months, two groups for 2 months (at 2-3 and 4-5 months of age), the fourth group was untreated. Next, the rats were recorded 6 days after the last da

Modulation of the ERP repetition effects during exposure to phobia-relevant and other affective pictures in spider phobia.

In the present study, dense sensor event-related potentials were measured in spider-phobic individuals and non-anxious controls during incidental encoding of phobia-relevant spider and standard neutral, unpleasant and pleasant pictures. Stimulus repetition effects were assessed by presenting each picture twice--in the first and in the second half of the session. Repeated presentation of standard pleasant, unpleasant and neutral pictures resulted in a late ERP repetition effect that was similarly pronounced in both experimental groups and for all picture categories. Moreover, relative to non-fe

N1, P2 and T-complex of the auditory brain event-related potentials to tones with varying rise times in adults with and without dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a learning difficulty affecting the acquisition of fluent reading and spelling skills due to poor phonological processing. Underlying deficits in processing sound rise time have also been found in children and adults with dyslexia. However, the neural basis for these deficits is unknown. In the present study event-related potentials were used to index neural processing and examine the effect of rise time manipulation on the obligatory N1, T-complex and P2 responses in English speaking adults with and without dyslexia. The Tb wave of the T-complex showed differences between groups,

Effects of auditory hallucinations on the mismatch negativity (MMN) in schizophrenia as measured by a modified 'optimal' multi-feature paradigm.

UNLABELLED: The recently developed Optimal-3 multi-feature MMN paradigm, a shortened version of the 'optimal' multi-feature MMN paradigm, allows for the focused recording of the most widely reported MMN deviants (frequency, duration, intensity) within an efficient and time-saving paradigm. The objective of this study was to examine MMN acoustic change detection in schizophrenia (SZ), and elucidate its association with auditory verbal hallucinations (AH), using the Optimal-3. METHODS: MMN to duration, frequency and intensity deviants were recorded in 12 SZ outpatients (SZs) with persistent AHs

Autonomic arousal in adults who stutter prior to various reading tasks intended to elicit changes in stuttering frequency.

This study examined relationships between anticipatory autonomic arousal and stuttering in four reading tasks. 13 adult persons who stutter (PWS) reported their 'feared' (expected to elicit more stuttering) sounds. They read phrases initiated by feared (F) and neutral (N) phonemes. Both stimuli sets were read solo (S) and with choral accompaniment (C), creating FS, FC, NS, and NC conditions. Skin conductance (SC) and heart rate (HR) measures were made during a 9s window that followed stimulus presentation and preceded speaking. Only SC measures produced significant differences across condition

Evaluation of traumatic brain injury: brain potentials in diagnosis, function, and prognosis.

The focus of this review is an analysis of the use of event-related brain potential (ERP) abnormalities as indices of functional pathophysiology in survivors of traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI may be the most prevalent but least understood neurological disorder in both civilian and military populations. In the military, thousands of new brain injuries occur yearly; this lends considerable urgency to the use of highly sensitive ERP tools to illuminate brain changes and to address remediation issues. We review the processes thought to be indexed by the cognitive components of the ERP and outli

Occipital γ response to auditory stimulation in patients with schizophrenia.

This study investigated changes in gamma oscillations during auditory sensory processing (auditory-evoked gamma responses, AEGR) and target detection (auditory event-related gamma responses, AERGR) in healthy controls (n=10) and patients with schizophrenia (n=10) using both single-trial and averaged time-frequency data analysis. The results show that single-trial gamma responses in patients were altered in magnitude and topographic pattern for both the AEGR and the AERGR experimental conditions, whereas no differences were found for the averaged evoked gamma response. At the single-trial level

Brain function with complex decision making using electroencephalography.

A computer-administered assessment for decision making relevant to daily-living decisions, using the technique of complex decision making (CDM), has been previously developed and tested in our laboratory. The present study sought to identify unique patterns of brain activity in the alpha band associated with CDM. We recorded electroencephalogram (EEG) from 30 scalp sites, during a series of baseline, eyes open fixation tasks, and CDM tasks, in different contexts, in a group of 9 male and 7 female young healthy adults, aged 18 to 34. The decision making contexts, designed to simulate real-world

Differential predictive power of self report and implicit measures on behavioural and physiological fear responses to spiders.

In this study, we investigated to what extent indirect measures predict behavioural and physiological fear responses towards spiders. Implicit attitudes towards spiders were assessed using an implicit association test and attentional bias towards spiders was assessed using a dot probe task and a disengagement task. Results showed that a self report measure of fear for spiders, but not the indirect measures predicted avoidance behaviour. The indirect measures but not the self report measure predicted changes in heart rate in response to the presentation of a spider. These results suggest that i

Suppression of emotional words in the Think/No-Think paradigm investigated with functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

The current pilot study was designed to investigate mechanisms of suppression of emotional and non-emotional words with Anderson's Think/No-Think paradigm using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). We found no differences in the suppression of negative, positive and neutral words on the behavioral level. Neurophysiological data, however, have shown more activation in right dlPFC and right vlPFC during attempts to suppress negative stimuli than during attempts to suppress neutral or positive stimuli. Our results thus provide further insights into the different mechanisms of voluntary

Varying required effort during interference control in children with AD/HD: task performance and ERPs.

Prominent models of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) contend that disinhibition is the core deficit, or that any inhibition deficits that exist are secondary to dysfunctional energetic regulation (i.e. effort and arousal). This study tested these models by investigating the influence of task-directed effort, as manipulated by stimulus degradation, on interference control deficits in children with AD/HD. Twenty children with AD/HD aged between 7 and 14years were matched in age to 20 controls and performed a modified visual Eriksen flanker task, while EEG and skin conductance lev

Alterations in visual and auditory processing in hemispatial neglect: an evoked potential follow-up study.

Hemispatial neglect is common after cerebrovascular stroke in the right hemisphere. Cortical electrophysiological studies, especially investigations of both visual and auditory processing in subjects with neglect are sparse. Our purpose was to assess whether and to which extent subjects with neglect may show impairments in both visual and auditory processing. Thereby, we assessed the evolution of changes in sensory processing and neglect symptoms over a 6 month follow-up period. Twenty-one stroke subjects with hemispatial neglect were studied at baseline, 3 weeks later and at 6 months follow-u

Preliminary evidence that exercise dependence is associated with blunted cardiac and cortisol reactions to acute psychological stress.

Low or blunted cardiovascular and cortisol reactions to acute psychological stress have been shown to characterise those with a tobacco or alcohol dependency. The present study tested the hypothesis that exercise dependency would be similarly associated with blunted reactivity. Young female exercisers (N=219) were screened by questionnaire for exercise dependence. Ten women with probable exercise dependence and 10 non dependent controls were selected for laboratory stress testing. Cardiovascular activity and salivary cortisol were measured at rest and in response to a 10-min mental arithmetic

An integrative assessment of brain and body function 'at rest' in panic disorder: a combined quantitative EEG/autonomic function study.

We conducted a quantitative electroencephalographic (QEEG) and autonomic assessment of panic disorder (PD). The study samples comprised 52 individuals meeting DSM-IV criteria for PD (with or without agoraphobia) and 104 age-, gender-, and handedness-matched controls. EEG data were acquired from 16 scalp sites during resting eyes-open (REO) and eyes-closed (REC) conditions, and spectral power was assessed within 4 frequency bands: theta, alpha-1, alpha-2, and beta. The main findings were an overall reduction of spectral power in PD, compared to controls (Group main effect, p=.011), which was mo

Physical activity and respiratory behavior in daily life of patients with panic disorder and healthy controls.

Panic disorder (PD) has been linked in laboratory investigations to respiratory alterations, particularly persistent respiratory variability. However, studies of PD respiratory pattern outside the laboratory are rare, have not controlled for the confounding influence of varying levels of physical activity, and have not addressed whether abnormalities in respiratory pattern vary depending on the intensity of physical activity. Cognitive and biological theories of PD, in fact, predict that respiratory alterations may be particularly pronounced when patients are physically active. This study asse

PTSD, but not childhood maltreatment, modifies responses to unpleasant odors.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) as well as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is said to result in functional changes to amygdalae and orbitofrontal cortex. Thus, it might be expected to change olfactory function in adults with a CM-history and current PTSD symptomatology as amygdalae and orbitofrontal cortex are of major importance for olfactory information processing. To explore this we investigated olfactory function in 31 women with current psychopathology and a history of CM, 28 without CM, and 27 healthy women. We used the "Sniffin' Sticks" threshold and identification test and analyzed ch

Response preparation with adjacent versus overlapped hands: a pupillometric study.

Preparatory cues facilitate performance in speeded choice tasks. It is debated, however, whether the lateralized neuro-anatomical organization of the human motor system contributes to this facilitation. To investigate this issue, we examined response preparation in a finger-cuing task using two conditions. In the hands adjacent condition, the hands were placed adjacently to each other with index and middle fingers placed on four linearly arrayed response keys. In the overlapped hand placement condition, the fingers of different hands alternated, thus dissociating hand and spatial position fact

ERP differences of pre-lexical processing between dyslexic and non-dyslexic children.

The present Event-Related Potential (ERP) study aimed to investigate group differences in the early processing stages of 36 dyslexic and 24 non-dyslexic 8-12 year old children performing a lexical decision (word/pseudoword judgment) task. Our data showed larger amplitudes of negative-going waveforms in non-dyslexic children than dyslexic children over occipital/occipitotemporal electrodes at about 220 ms after stimulus onset. This electrophysiological response has previously been identified in adult readers and labeled as the N170 component. Notably, as reflected by the topographic maps childr

Hyperventilation in panic disorder and asthma: empirical evidence and clinical strategies.

Sustained or spontaneous hyperventilation has been associated with a variety of physical symptoms and has been linked to a number of organic illnesses and mental disorders. Theories of panic disorder hold that hyperventilation either produces feared symptoms of hypocapnia or protects against feared suffocation symptoms of hypercapnia. Although the evidence for both theories is inconclusive, findings from observational, experimental, and therapeutic studies suggest an important role of low carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in this disorder. Similarly, hypocapnia and associated hyperpnia are linked to
