Early and late temporo-spatial effects of contextual interference during perception of facial affect.

Contextual features during recognition of facial affect are assumed to modulate the temporal course of emotional face processing. Here, we simultaneously presented colored backgrounds during valence categorizations of facial expressions. Subjects incidentally learned to perceive negative, neutral and positive expressions within a specific colored context. Subsequently, subjects made fast valence judgments while presented with the same face-color-combinations as in the first run (congruent trials) or with different face-color-combinations (incongruent trials). Incongruent trials induced signifi

Effects of explicit and implicit perseverative cognition on cardiac recovery after cognitive stress.

Slow cardiovascular (CV) recovery after stress is a predictor of adverse CV outcomes. Perseverative cognition (PC) about stress has been hypothesized to co-determine slow recovery. In the present study, it was investigated whether two types of trait PC, i.e. trait worry and trait rumination, predicted delayed cardiac recovery after a cognitive stressor. Furthermore, it was examined whether explicit state PC (i.e. negative intrusive thoughts) or implicit state PC (i.e. automatic vigilance) additionally predicted delayed cardiac recovery. Fifty-nine participants performed a stressful task, which

Event-related potential and autonomic signs of maladaptive information processing during an auditory oddball task in panic disorder.

Various empirical data suggest that individuals with Panic Disorder (PD) fail to appropriately assign significance to sensory stimuli within the internal and external milieu, including those stimuli which are patently threat-neutral. The failure to appropriately discriminate 'signal' stimuli from among 'noise' signals [Gordon, E., Liddell, B.J., Brown, K.J., Bryant, R., Clark, C.R., Das, P., et al. 2007. Integrating objective gene-brain-behavior markers of psychiatric disorders. J. Integr. Neurosci. 6, 1-34.] results in disturbances of information processing and attentional deployment, which m

Sustained gamma-band EEG following negative words in depression and schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: Sustained and elaborative emotional information processing in depression and decreased affective elaboration in schizophrenia are considered hallmarks of these disorders but have not been directly measured. Gamma-band (35-45 Hz) EEG has been associated with semantic functions such as feature binding and may index these elaborative processing. This study examined whether there were group differences in baseline and sustained gamma-band EEG following emotional stimuli in healthy adults as well as adults with depression and schizophrenia. METHODS: 24 never-depressed healthy control

Semantic processing of emotional words in depression and schizophrenia.

Major depressive disorder is associated with dysfunction in brain regions involved in language and emotion processing. Despite evidence of emotion processing biases in depression, neurophysiological evidence of language dysfunction for emotional words in depression has been inconsistent. This series of three studies evaluated whether depressed individuals exhibited abnormal semantic processing of emotionally-valenced words. During the passive viewing of sentences with mood congruent and incongruent sentence endings, the N400 component of the event-related brain potential was measured in patien

Cardiac responses predict decisions: an investigation of the relation between orienting response and decisions in the ultimatum game.

Emotion-based behaviors in humans cannot be fully explained by economic rationality. Particularly, in the ultimatum game, which incorporates conflict between self-interest and fairness, negative emotions evoked by an unfair offer seem to promote an economically irrational decision. In accordance with this suggestion, the previous studies have reported that physiological arousal is associated with rejecting unfair offers. In the present study, we investigated electrocardiogram and electrodermal activities in individuals which received fair, advantageously unfair, and disadvantageously unfair of

Reading words and pseudowords in dyslexia: ERP and behavioural tests in English-speaking adolescents.

The study reports neurophysiological and behavioural correlates of lexical decision processes in English speaking dyslexic and non-dyslexic readers. Nine dyslexic adolescents (ages 15.6-17.8) and 9 control (ages 15.4-19.3) adolescents were tested, and the event related potentials (ERPs) to words and pseudowords were recorded simultaneously with behavioural measures. As expected, both groups showed significantly lower accuracy and longer response times for the pseudowords. Furthermore, overall performance (in terms of lower accuracy and longer response times) was significantly worse for the dys

The autonomic phenotype of rumination.

Recent studies suggest that ruminative thoughts may be mediators of the prolonged physiological effects of stress. We hypothesized that autonomic dysregulation plays a role in the relation between rumination and health. Rumination was induced by an anger-recall task in 45 healthy subjects. Heart rate variability (HRV), baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), and baroreflex effectiveness index (BEI) change scores were evaluated to obtain the autonomic phenotype of rumination. Personality traits and endothelial activation were examined for their relation to autonomic responses during rumination. Degree of

Electrophysiological correlates of anxious rumination.

EEG coherence and EEG power response were recorded as 63 participants engaged in one of three experimental conditions: 'personal rumination', 'nominal rumination', and 'baseline counting'. The rumination conditions were separated by a neutral (counting) task to eliminate neural carry-over effects. For personal rumination, participants spent 2 min ruminating about something in their life about which they were in two minds (i.e., in a state of personal conflict). For nominal rumination, they were presented with a conflict scenario (concerning buying a car) and instructed to ruminate about that f

Impaired cortical activation in autistic children: is the mirror neuron system involved?

The inability to imitate becomes obvious early in autistic children and seems to contribute to learning delay and to disorders of communication and contact. Posture, motility and imitation disorders in autistic syndrome might be the consequence of an abnormality of sensori-motor integration, related to the visual perception of movement, and could reflect impairment of the mirror neuron system (MNS). We compared EEG activity during the observation of videos showing actions or still scenes in 14 right-handed autistic children and 14 right-handed, age- and gender-matched control children (3 girls

Speech versus tone processing in compensated dyslexia: discrimination and lateralization with a dichotic mismatch negativity (MMN) paradigm.

This study investigated the possibility of a pervasive auditory-processing deficit in 10 adult dyslexics who had compensated for their reading disability, compared to 10 matched controls. Unlike previous studies [Baldeweg, T., Richardson, A., Watkins, S., Foale, C. & Gruzelier, J. (1999). Impaired auditory frequency discrimination in dyslexia detected with mismatch evoked potentials. Annals of Neurology, 45(4): 495-503], the current EEG study used a dichotic presentation of stimuli in order to probe the relationship between ear advantage and left- and right-hemisphere dominance for processing

Hostility, emotional expression, and hemodynamic responses to laboratory stressors: reactivity attenuating effects of a tendency to express emotion interpersonally.

The present study examined the interactive effects of hostility and a predisposition towards emotional expression or suppression in interpersonal situations. We also attempted to partially replicate findings from a recent investigation which provided evidence of lower myocardial and greater vascular responses in high-hostile relative to low-hostile individuals. Undergraduate students (n=99) participated in a protocol consisting of rest periods, speech preparation and presentation, a social-evaluative mental arithmetic task, and a stress interview. After classifying participants into high/low h

Does very premature birth affect the functioning of the somatosensory cortex?--A magnetoencephalography study.

Increased survival of extremely low birth weight infants has led to a need for new prognostic methods to predict possible future neurological impairment. We investigated the early development of the somatosensory system by recording the somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) during natural sleep at fullterm age in 16 very prematurely born infants and 16 healthy newborns born at term. The purpose was to determine possible changes in the function of the somatosensory cortex in the prematurely born infants by comparing the latency, strength, location and morphology of the SEFs with those of

Auditory hallucinations and the mismatch negativity: processing speech and non-speech sounds in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: In line with emerging research strategies focusing on specific symptoms rather than global syndromes in psychiatric disorders, we examined the functional neural correlates of auditory verbal hallucinations (AHs) in schizophrenia. Recent neuroimaging and behavioural evidence suggest a reciprocal relationship between auditory cortex response to external sounds versus that induced by AHs. METHODS: The mismatch negativity (MMN), a well established event-related potential (ERP) index of auditory cortex function, was assessed in 12 hallucinating patients (HP), 12 non-hallucinating patie

EEG photic driving: right-hemisphere reactivity deficit in childhood autism. A pilot study.

In 14 autistic boys, aged 6-14 years, free of drug treatment, with relatively intact verbal functions and without severe or moderate mental retardation (I.Q. 91.4+/-22.8), intermittent photic stimulation at 11 fixed frequencies of 3-24 Hz revealed latent deficiency of the right hemisphere in the photic driving reactivity, predominantly at the fast alpha and beta frequencies of stimulation. The left-side prevalence was observed: 1) in the total number of driving peaks evaluated for the first four harmonics in the EEG spectra of 14 cortical areas and 2) in the driving amplitude in the spectra of

Neurophysiological responses to face, facial regions and objects in adults with Asperger's syndrome: an ERP investigation.

Face processing differences have been observed between AS and control subjects at the behavioural and neurological levels. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the neurophysiological basis of processing faces and facial features (eyes and mouths) in adults with AS relative to age- and gender-matched typically-developing controls. These results were compared with ERPs generated to objects in both groups to determine if any differences were specific to facial stimuli. Although both groups elicited earlier N170 latencies to faces than to face parts and to eyes relative to mouths, a

Interactions between the chemical senses: trigeminal function in patients with olfactory loss.

The intranasal trigeminal and the olfactory system are intimately connected. There is evidence showing that acquired olfactory loss leads to reduced trigeminal sensitivity due to the lack of a central-nervous interaction. Both, the orbitofrontal cortex and the rostral insula appear to be of significance in the amplification of trigeminal input which is missing in patients with olfactory loss. On peripheral levels, however, adaptive mechanisms seem to produce an increase in the trigeminal responsiveness of patients with hyposmia or anosmia.

Tobacco usage interacts with postdisaster psychopathology on circadian salivary cortisol.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) have been associated with increased rates of tobacco usage as well as with dysregulations of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. At the same time tobacco also affects the HPA axis. This paper examines the relationships between PTSD, posttraumatic MDD, smoking and levels of circadian cortisol 2-3 years postdisaster. Subjects were survivors of the Enschede fireworks disaster. The sample consisted of 38 healthy survivors, 40 subjects with PTSD, and 17 subjects with posttraumatic MDD. Lack of efficacy of music to improve sleep: a polysomnographic and quantitative EEG analysis.

An increasing number of studies have been examining non-pharmacological methods to improve the quality of sleep, including the use of music and other types of auditory stimulation. While many of these studies have found significant results, they suffer from a combination of subjective self-report measures as the primary outcome, a lack of proper controls, often combine music with some type of relaxation therapy, or do not randomise subjects to control and treatment conditions. It is therefore difficult to assess the efficacy of music to induce or improve sleep. The present study therefore exam

Cardiac responses induced during thought-based control of a virtual environment.

Cardiac responses induced by motor imagery were investigated in 3 subjects in a series of experiments with a synchronous (cue-based) Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). The cue specified right hand vs. leg/foot motor imagery. After a number of BCI training sessions reaching a classification accuracy of at least 80%, the BCI experiments were carried out in an immersive virtual environment (VE), commonly referred as a "CAVE". In this VE, the subjects were able to move along a virtual street by motor imagery alone. The thought-based control of VE resulted in an acceleration of the heart rate in 2 sub
