The application of cognitive event-related brain potentials (ERPs) in language-impaired individuals: review and case studies.

There is a substantial body of basic research that has utilized ERPs to investigate the neurological basis of cognition. This research has, in turn, led to the development of practical applications of cognitive ERPs in patient populations. In particular, recent work has focused on the development of ERP-based assessment measures for the neuropsychological assessment of dyslexia and language impairments secondary to stroke. This review describes the innovative assessment methods program (IAMP), an initiative to utilize ERPs for a neuropsychological assessment of patients who cannot be evaluated

Cardiovascular reactivity during public speaking as a function of personality variables.

An experiment was conducted to assess the effects of a real-life stressor (public speaking) upon cardiovascular reactivity (CVR). Changes in blood pressure and heart rate from baseline to task were measured in a sample of 86 men and women. The purpose was to examine the effects of individual differences (Type A personality, hostility and gender) on CVR. Participants gave a 6-min oral presentation during which they were evaluated by their professor and with classmates as the audience. Results indicated that all participants had marked CVR during public speaking. There were differences in reacti

Event-related potentials (ERPs) to hemifield presentations of emotional stimuli: differences between depressed patients and healthy adults in P3 amplitude and asymmetry.

Depression may involve dysfunction of right parietotemporal cortex, a region activated during perception of affective stimuli. To further test this hypothesis, event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were measured in a paradigm previously shown to produce ERP asymmetries to affective stimuli over parietal sites in healthy adults. Pictures of patients with dermatological diseases showing disordered or healed facial areas before (negative) or after (neutral) surgical treatment were briefly exposed for 250 ms to either the left or right hemifield. ERPs of 30 unmedicated, unipolar depressed patients

Correlation dimension of EEG slow-wave activity during sleep in narcoleptic patients under bed rest conditions.

The calculation of the correlation dimension (D2) was applied to the study of the profiles of EEG slow-wave activity in nine narcoleptic subjects and nine sex- and age-matched control subjects who, following a baseline night recording, were maintained on 16 h of diurnal sleep deprivation and, thereafter, submitted to a 32-h bed rest protocol. The reversibility test allowed us to reject the null hypothesis that the time series considered in our study were generated by a static transformation of a linear Gaussian random process. Similarly, all profiles showed a positive largest Lyapunov exponent

Hemodynamic profile of stress-induced anticipation and recovery.

Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output, and total peripheral resistance were measured in 100 healthy men and women with the aim of investigating hemodynamic profile during anticipation of, and recovery from, exposure to active and passive laboratory stressors. A 5-min anticipatory period preceded two tasks, both of which lasted 2.5 min. The tasks were mental arithmetic ('beta-adrenergic' stress) and the cold pressor test ('alpha-adrenergic' stress). Each task was followed by a 5-min recovery period. Blood pressure and heart rate were measured with a Fi

Stress and personality as factors in women's cardiovascular reactivity.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the relationships among Type A behavior, hostility and cardiovascular reactivity (CVR) in women. Changes in heart rate, blood pressure and skin conductance from baseline to task levels were used to assess reactivity. These measures were obtained from 96 women during a seated baseline period, a reaction time task and during an oral IQ quiz. Analyses indicated that Type A and high hostile women were more reactive to an oral IQ quiz and reaction time stressors than Type B and low hostile women. Specifically, Type As showed significantly greater increases

Serum lipid concentrations, hostility and cardiovascular reactions to mental stress.

The objective of the present study was to determine whether serum lipid concentrations interact with hostility to affect cardiovascular responses to mental stress. One-hundred and seventy-four male subjects were screened with the Cook and Medley hostility scale (Ho), the anger expression inventory by Spielberger and a general health questionnaire. Subjects in the upper (n = 22) and lower (n = 22) quartile of the Ho score distribution were asked to take part in a laboratory experiment. Continuous measures of heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and electrodermal activity were taken while par

Interactive effects of trait hostility and anger expression on cardiovascular reactivity in young men.

Hostility and anger-expression style are personality traits often associated with elevated cardiovascular reactivity and potential heightened risk for cardiovascular disease. In the present study a sample of 50 young, healthy men were divided into groups low or high on the Cook-Medley Hostility scale and on anger-out from Spielberger's Anger Expression scale. Subjects worked on mental arithmetic and public speaking tasks in counterbalanced order. Heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure and hemodynamic indices were measured at baseline and during the tasks. Hostility and anger-out int

Parental history of hypertension and hostility moderate cardiovascular responses to interpersonal conflict.

A parental history of hypertension has been implicated in the development of hypertension, perhaps by virtue of an elevated cardiovascular response to stress. Similarly, hostility has been hypothesized to be linked to cardiovascular disease through cardiovascular hyperreactivity. The interaction of parental history and hostility in moderating cardiovascular response has been infrequently examined, though research suggests the two may be linked through familial factors. The present study examined the cardiovascular response of 98 healthy young adult males categorized as offspring of hypertensiv

Magnetoencephalographic evidence for common sources of long latency fields to rare target and rare novel visual stimuli.

This study used magnetoencephalography to examine the possibility that different generators account for the long-latency event-related potential (P300), evoked by rare target and by rare non-target, novel visual stimuli, in a visual oddball counting task performed by seven subjects. As expected, P300 peak latency was longer in response to rare targets compared to novel, non-target stimuli. Two main source regions were found for the Target- as well as for the Novel-P300, one in the temporal and one in the occipital lobe. Centers of neural activity were observed in the vicinity of the superior t

Study of human occipital alpha rhythm: the alphon hypothesis and alpha suppression.

Alpha rhythm of the parieto-occipital area is comprised of a parade of short-lived cortical excitations (alphons), each of which exhibits oscillations having a stable period within the alpha bandwidth. Strong alpha rhythm is produced by alphons extending over a larger cortical area, although an enhanced cortical current density may also contribute. Local suppression of alpha rhythm indicates when specific cortical areas become engaged in sensory or cognitive functions. Examples are provided for mental imagery, visual memory, auditory memory, and silent rhythming.

Possible role of sweating in the pathophysiology of panic attacks.

In recent years the role of hyperventilation in the generation of panic attacks has attracted a considerable amount of interest. According to these studies hyperventilation can elicit the somatic symptoms of panic due to systemic alkalosis. We suggest that since in the case of panic, sweating might cause alkalosis, it could also contribute to the generation of panic attacks. In light of this hypothesis we made a statistical analysis of the panic symptoms of 111 panic patients diagnosed according to DSM-III criteria. The analysis revealed that: (1) there was a well identified group of panic pat

Optimal foetal growth in the reduction of learning and behaviour disorder and prevention of sudden infant death (SIDS) after the first month.

A theory is presented that a diet low in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the third trimester of pregnancy may delay myelination and brain maturation. This may underpin learning and behaviour disorders and sudden infant death (SIDS) after the first month, conditions that are associated with lower than average birthweight. Epidemiological evidence is reviewed showing an inverse relation between the proportion of heavy newborns (> 3500 g) and infant mortality rate. Some countries with a lower proportion of heavy newborns despite equally high standards of living and medical care have higher

Opposite asymmetries in blind locomotor orientation of patients with panic agoraphobia compared to those with generalized anxiety.

Panic agoraphobic subjects constantly struggle with the accurate registration of everyday space-time dimension. They are hindered in the exploration of their surroundings by constant self-directed attention. In our investigations we examined whether during experimental goal-directed locomotion orientation insecurity would appear. The accuracy of target-directed motion, i.e. the degree of lateral deviation, was recorded in three diagnostic groups, panic agoraphobics (15 subjects), generalized anxiety patients (15 subjects), and normal controls (15 subjects), and normal controls (15 subjects). Cynical hostility influences anger, but not cardiovascular reactivity during competition with harassment.

Cynical hostility has been linked to coronary heart disease (CHD), and there is mixed support for the hypothesis that cynical hostility may contribute to CHD through exaggerated cardiovascular responses to anger-provoking stressors. The present study tested the influences of cynical hostility on affective and cardiovascular responses to provocation in 68 undergraduate men. Subjects were divided into high and low cynical hostility groups by a median split on Cook-Medley Hostility Scale scores, and half of the subjects in each group were harassed during competition on a video game. High hostile

Skin ERGs: their effectiveness in paediatric visual assessment, confounding factors, and comparison with ERGs recorded using various types of corneal electrode.

Comparison of scotopic and photopic ERGs recorded using a variety of ERG electrodes show that contact lens electrodes produce the largest ERGs, and these are about 30-50% larger compared with those recorded with foil or thread electrodes, which contact a smaller part of the cornea. Flash ERGs recorded from infra-orbital skin electrodes are about one eighth the size of those recorded with contact lens electrodes, and around one quarter the size of those recorded with foil or fibre corneal electrodes. Reliable ERGs can be obtained in young children from infra-orbital electrodes sited centrally,

The maturational theory of brain development and cerebral excitability in the multifactorially inherited manic-depressive psychosis and schizophrenia.

An association has been established between the multifactorially inherited rate of physical maturation and the final step in brain development, when some 40% of synapses are eliminated. This may imply that similarly to endocrine disease entities, we have cerebral disease entities at the extremes of the maturational rate continuum. The restriction of prepubertal pruning to excitatory synapses leaving the number of inhibitory ones fairly constant, implies changes in cerebral excitability as a function of rate of maturation (age at puberty). In early maturation there will be an excess in excitato

Visual processing, lateralization and syndromes of schizotypy.

There is an association between positive features of schizotypy and dyslexia, largely involving distortions of visual and auditory perception and associated cognitive anomalies. In dyslexia, there is strong evidence for a disorder of subcortical magnocellular pathways, which may underlie these perceptual aberrations. Here we investigated visual processing in relation to three syndromes of schizotypy-Active, Withdrawn and Unreality-in normal adults, using a "dot localization" test of visual direction sense on which dyslexics perform poorly, and which should be sensitive to magnocellular dysfunc

Developmental dyslexia, neural timing and hemispheric lateralisation.

Approximately 5% of 8-10-year-olds experience exceptional difficulties learning to read (developmental dyslexia). This usually has a congenital basis; it runs in families, and affects 4 times as many boys as girls. Dyslexics typically show impairment both in phonemic segmentation (the subdivision of speech beyond the natural syllabic level) and in sequencing small visual symbols. Both these skills draw upon the ability of the nervous system to time sensory events precisely. A specific magnocellular cell type which expresses a distinctive surface antigen plays a crucial role in these functions.

Dyslexia, handedness and syndromes of psychosis-proneness.

In an earlier study, adult dyslexia was found to be strongly associated with positive schizotypal traits, and particularly with unusual perceptual experiences. However, recent evidence suggests that the structure of psychosis-proneness in normals may involve three or four distinct yet related dimensions. Therefore a further study was conducted, using a wider range of measures, to explore associations between dyslexia and these different syndromes of psychosis-proneness. Relationships with handedness were also investigated. If three syndromes of psychosis-proneness were delineated, broadly corr
