The Nazi regime held power for well over a decade in Germany and were steadfast in their anti-Semitic agenda. Among the massive cohort of immigrants to America were approximately 5056 Jewish physicians, including several highly esteemed neurologists and neuroscientists of the time. Emigrating to a new world proved difficult and provided new challenges by way of language barriers, roadblocks in medical careers, and problems integrating into an alien system of medical training and clinical practice. In this article, the authors examine the tumultuous and accomplished lives of three Jewish German

Anatomical and physiological investigations indicate two major distinct functional streams within the extrastriate visual cortex of the macaque monkey, and behavioral observations suggest that the ventral (occipitotemporal) pathway is the cornerstone for object recognition whereas the dorsal (occipitoparietal) pathway is primarily involved in visuospatial perception and visuomotor performance. In the context of this dichotomy we conducted a psychophysical and neuropsychological study of visual perceptual abilities in two stroke patients, each with lesions involving several extrastriate areas.

BACKGROUND: Primary intraventricular meningiomas are notably rare with an incidence of 0.5 to 3% among all intracranial meningiomas. We present a series of 16 patients with histologically verified intraventricular meningiomas, the clinical and neuroradiological findings, and surgical results.
METHODS: The charts of the patients including surgical records, discharge letters, histologic records, follow up records and imaging studies were analyzed retrospectively from 1978 to 2001.
RESULTS: Collectively, 110 primary intraventricular tumors were surgically resected in our neurosurgical departmen

BACKGROUND: Acquired writing impairment, or dysgraphia, is common in aphasia. It affects both handwriting and typing, and may recover less well than other aphasic symptoms. Dysgraphia is an increasing priority for intervention, particularly for those wishing to participate in online written communication. Effective dysgraphia treatment studies have been reported, but many did not target, or did not achieve, improvements in functional writing. Functional outcomes might be promoted by therapies that exploit digital technologies, such as voice recognition and word prediction software.

BACKGROUND: Auditory processing disorders and difficulties in reading and spelling.
AIM: To analyze the answers presented by children with reading and spelling disorders in a simplified auditory processing test and in a four sequential syllables memory test.
METHOD: Participants of this study were 9 children who attended a special program at school, with no hearing impairments and with no history of neurologic and/or psyquiatric disorders.
RESULTS: A significant relation was found between reading and spelling difficulties, and failing in the four sequential syllable memory test and instrume

This paper reports a study of the breakdown of semantic memory in the case of a subject with semantic dementia. The first experiment shows that the subject failed to comprehend words of low familiarity and word frequency, even though the spoken word forms were recognised as familiar. Experiments 2 and 3 showed (a) that the recall of word meanings in definition tasks did not vary with the generality of the word meaning (e.g. category, basic level, or subordinate property) but varied instead with the concept familiarity and frequency of the name; (b) that the ability to verify properties of basi

This study of a dyslexic patient supports the view that the level of impairment of the phonological route plays a role in the production of semantic paralexias. The patient's reading was based on a defective phoneme-to-grapheme transcoding, in spite of evidence that semantic information was available through non phonological routes. The hypothesis that the residual ability to carry out phonological recoding could block the production of semantic paralexias was confirmed by tachistoscopic reading, assumed to interfere with phonological recoding in this patient, that provoked a definite rise of

Lexical orthographic information provides the basis for recovering the meanings of words in reading and for generating correct word spellings in writing. Research has provided evidence that an area of the left ventral temporal cortex, a subregion of what is often referred to as the visual word form area (VWFA), plays a significant role specifically in lexical orthographic processing. The current investigation goes beyond this previous work by examining the neurotopography of the interface of lexical orthography with semantics. We apply a novel lesion mapping approach with three individuals wit

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a multisystem autosomal dominant disorder primarily characterized by myotonia and distal muscle weakness. Central nervous system (CNS) involvement, including cognitive, executive, and emotional dysfunctions, is increasingly being recognized; however, language impairment as an initial presentation is rare. A 50-year-old right-handed woman with a six-month history of progressive word-finding difficulty, vague speech, and social withdrawal was referred for evaluation. Neurological examination revealed distal muscle atrophy (grip strength: 5 kg right, 8 kg left)

Brain-behavior relationships are complex. For instance, one might know a brain region's function(s) but still be unable to accurately predict deficit type or severity after damage to that region. Here, I discuss the case of damage to the angular gyrus (AG) that can cause left-right confusion, finger agnosia, attention deficit, and lexical agraphia, as well as impairment in sentence processing, episodic memory, number processing, and gesture imitation. Some of these symptoms are grouped under AG syndrome or Gerstmann's syndrome, though its exact underlying neuronal systems remain elusive. This

INTRODUCTION: Hashimoto's Encephalopathy is an unusual condition associated with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. This immune-mediated, steroid-dependent entity was first described thirty years ago. In this case report, we discuss the importance of considering this diagnosis in the evaluation of confusion.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient is a 55-year-old African-American woman residing in United States, who was admitted to the hospital with a four-day history of mental status changes. Her past medical history was significant for type II Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, and Hypothyroidism. There was no

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Korean-speaking patients with a brain injury may show agraphia that differs from that of English-speaking patients due to the unique features of Hangul syllabic writing. Each grapheme in Hangul must be arranged from left to right and/or top to bottom within a square space to form a syllable, which requires greater visuospatial abilities than when writing the letters constituting an alphabetic writing system. Among the Hangul grapheme positions within a syllable, the position of a vowel is important because it determines the writing direction and the whole configuration

A 52-year-old right-handed man developed a deficit of two-way transcoding between phonological and Arabic representations of numbers after cerebral hemorrhage in the left occipital lobe, intraparietal sulcus, and the surrounding of inferior parietal lobule. He showed right hemianopia, mild Wernicke's aphasia, agraphia, and phonological dyslexia. Calculation, comparison between numbers and comprehension of arithmetic signs were almost preserved. Retrieval of the mnemonic rhymes for the multiplication table (kuku) was moderately compromised. He showed good performance in the following tasks: sel

A 65-year-old female was admitted to our hospital because of left hemiparesis with sudden onset one week before. She was congenitally right-handed. She had been a teacher of Japanese string instrument (samisen) playing and been able to sing Japanese traditional songs well. A tape on which she had recorded her songs one year before the admission also proved her to be a good singer. Neurological examination on admission revealed almost normal findings except for minimal weakness in her left hand fingers. Right temporal lobe hemorrhage was revealed by CT scan. One month after the admission, she c

Surface dyslexia and dysgraphia are considered diagnostic features of semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA) and are useful signs in English, a language whose attributes afford numerous opportunities to observe these phenomena. This, however, is not the case in many languages, including Italian, that have high transparency between orthography and phonology, making surface reading and spelling errors scarce. This creates a problem in applying the diagnostic recommendations for svPPA in such languages. Surface dyslexia and dysgraphia are examples of 'regularization' errors in which

BACKGROUND: Although some studies suggest that writing difficulties may be one of the early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD), they have been scarcely studied compared to oral language. Particularly noteworthy is the paucity of longitudinal studies that enable the observation of writing impairment as cognitive decline progresses.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the characteristics of writing in patients with AD and to monitor the deterioration of their performance over a follow-up period.
METHODS: Sixty-four participants (half with AD and half healthy elderly) were compare

A 64-year-old right-handed woman with no left-handers in the family developed aphasia associated with moderate left hemiparesis and dense left homonymous hemianopia following rupture of a right middle cerebral artery aneurysm and subsequent selective surgery confined to the right hemisphere. Severe left spatial neglect and constructional apraxia were also present. The patient was an achondroplasic dwarf whose previous medical and neurological history was otherwise unremarkable. Computed tomography of the brain showed a large right temporo-insulofrontoparietal lesion. Language and nonverbal cog

We report the unusual case of AZO, who professionally used handwritten shorthand writing, and became dysgraphic after a stroke. AZO suffered from a complex cognitive impairment, and part of her spelling errors resulted from damage to auditory input processing, to phonology-orthography conversion procedures and to the ortographic output lexicon. However, analysis of her writing performance showed that the same variables affected response accuracy in alphabetic and shorthand writing; and, that the same error types, including transpositions, were observed in all tasks in the two types of writing.

This study investigated patterns of neurodevelopmental dysfunction in children with writing disorders (WD). Records of children, ages 9 to 15 years, referred to a school problems clinic were examined. Using teacher questionnaire information, including ratings of writing legibility, mechanics, rate, linguistic sophistication, and spelling, 99 cases of WD were found. Sixty-three children without WD served as clinic controls. A cluster analysis revealed four discrete subtypes of WD and two non-WD control clusters. The four WD clusters were found to have different patterns of writing and reading c
