Nocturnal Dim Blue Light Is Associated with Splenic Immune Dysregulation and Altered CORT-GR Signalling in High-Fat-Diet-Fed Mice.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) has emerged as a pervasive environmental stressor that disrupts immune homeostasis. This study examined the association between nocturnal dim blue light (dBL) exposure and splenic immune alterations, with particular attention to the corticosterone-glucocorticoid receptor, or CORT-GR, signalling pathway in a high-fat diet-fed mouse model. Male C57BL/6 mice were exposed to dBL (~5 lx) during the dark phase for 12 weeks while maintained on a high-fat diet (HFD). Chronic dBL exposure was associated with splenic atrophy, impaired splenocyte proliferative responses,

Developmental blue-light exposure alters glucose and lipid metabolism through a ROS-ACD-1-associated oxidized-lipid pathway in C. elegans.

Although light broadly affects animal physiology, it remains unclear whether specific wavelengths directly reshape basal glucose and lipid metabolism in developing non-visual photoreceptive animals, and what specific molecular pathways mediate these effects. Here, using Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), a model lacking visual organs but retaining conserved metabolic pathways, we systematically evaluated metabolic phenotypes following early-life (L1 to young adult) exposure to red, green, blue, and white light spectra. We identified that blue light (450-460 nm) most strongly drove triglyceri

Optical properties and exciton transfer between N-heterocyclic carbene iridium(III) complexes for blue light-emitting diode applications from first principles.

N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) iridium(III) complexes are considered as promising candidates for blue emitters in organic light-emitting diodes. They can play the roles of the emitter as well as of electron and hole transporters in the same emission layer. We investigate optical transitions in such complexes with account of geometry and electronic structure changes upon excitation or charging and exciton transfer between the complexes from first principles. It is shown that excitation of NHC iridium complexes is accompanied by a large reorganization energy ∼0.7 eV and a significant loss in the o

Strongly-Confined CsPbBr3 Perovskite Quantum Dots with Ultralow Trap Density and Narrow Size Distribution for Efficient Pure-Blue Light-Emitting Diodes.

The development of pure-blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) faces challenges of spectral stability and low external quantum efficiency (EQE) due to phase separation in mixed halide compositions. Perovskite quantum dots (QDs) with strong confinement effects are promising alternatives to achieve high-quality pure-blue PeLEDs, yet their performance is often hindered by the poor size distribution and high trap density. A strategy combining thermodynamic control with a polishing-driven ligand exchange process to produce high-quality QDs is developed. The strongly-confined pure-blue (≈470

Photoactivatable Liposomes for Blue to Deep Red Light-Activated Surface Drug Release: Application to Controlled Delivery of the Antitumoral Drug Melphalan.

Liposome-based nanoparticles able to release, via a photolytic reaction, a payload anchored at the surface of the phospholipid bilayer were prepared. The liposome formulation strategy uses an original drug-conjugated blue light-sensitive photoactivatable coumarinyl linker. This is based on an efficient blue light-sensitive photolabile protecting group modified by a lipid anchor, which enables its incorporation into liposomes, leading to blue to green light-sensitive nanoparticles. In addition, the formulated liposomes were doped with triplet-triplet annihilation upconverting organic chromophor

A nonhuman primate model of blue light-induced progressive outer retina degeneration showing brimonidine drug delivery system-mediated cyto- and neuroprotection.

Geographic atrophy (GA) is an advanced form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) characterized by atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), loss of photoreceptors, and disruption of choriocapillaris. Excessive light exposure is toxic to the retina and is a known risk factor for AMD. We first investigated the effects of blue light-induced phototoxicity on RPE and photoreceptors in nonhuman primates (NHPs, a model of progressive retinal degeneration) and then evaluated the potential cyto- and neuroprotective effects of the brimonidine drug delivery system (Brimo DDS). In the first se

Solanum melongena L. Extract Protects Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells from Blue Light-Induced Phototoxicity in In Vitro and In Vivo Models.

N-retinylidene-N-retinylethanolamine (A2E) accumulation in the retina is a prominent marker of retinal degenerative diseases. Blue light exposure is considered as an important factor contributing to dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Eggplant and its constituents have been shown to confer health benefits, but their therapeutic effects on dry AMD remain incompletely understood. In this study, we showed that an extract of Solanum melongena L. (EPX) protected A2E-laden ARPE-19 cells against blue light-induced cell death via attenuating reactive oxygen species. aPDT using nanoconcentration of 1,9-dimethylmethylene blue associated to red light is efficacious in killing Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 in vitro.

The Enterococcus faecalis is a microorganism that causes multiple forms of resistance to a wide range of drugs used clinically. aPDT is a technique in which a visible light activates photosensitizer (PS), resulting in generation of reactive oxygen species that kill bacteria unselectively via an oxidative burst. aPDT is an alternative to antibiotics with the advantage of not causing resistance. The search for an alternative treatment of infections caused by E. faecalis, without using antibiotics, is off great clinical importance. The aim of present investigation was to assess the efficacy of us

Sentinel lymph node detection using fluorescein and blue light-emitting diodes in patients with breast carcinoma: A single-center prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is an essential procedure for lymph node staging in patients with breast carcinoma. Technetium-99m-labelled nanocolloid (99mTc) is the most accurate and widely used lymphatic mapping agent; however, there are concerns pertaining to the associated exposure to radiation. Studies focusing on new agents are required. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of SLN detection using fluorescein and blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in breast carcinoma patients. METHODS: In this prospective study, a total of 61 patients with breast carcinoma, requir

Polyphenol-enriched Vaccinium uliginosum L. fractions reduce retinal damage induced by blue light in A2E-laden ARPE19 cell cultures and mice.

Polyphenols exert beneficial effects on vision. We hypothesized that polyphenol components of Vaccinium uliginosum L. (V.U.) extract protect retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells against blue light-induced damage. Our aim was to test extracts containing polyphenol components to ascertain effects to reduce damage against blue light in RPEs. We measured the activity in fractions eluted from water, ethanol, and HP20 resin (FH), and found that the FH fraction had the highest beneficial activity. We isolated the individual active compounds from the FH fraction using chromatographic techniques, and

Integrated role of ROS and Ca+2 in blue light-induced chloroplast avoidance movement in leaves of Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle.

Directional chloroplast photorelocation is a major physio-biochemical mechanism that allows these organelles to realign themselves intracellularly in response to the intensity of the incident light as an adaptive response. Signaling processes involved in blue light (BL)-dependent chloroplast movements were investigated in Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle leaves. Treatments with antagonists of actin filaments [2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA)] and microtubules (oryzalin) revealed that actin filaments, but not microtubules, play a pivotal role in chloroplast movement. Involvement of reactive o

Apoptosis in the small intestine of neonatal rat using blue light-emitting diode devices and conventional halogen-quartz devices in phototherapy.

Phototherapy is the most frequently used treatment for the neonatal jaundice. However, recent papers report that phototherapy increased apoptosis in peripheral mononuclear leukocytes in vivo and in mouse lymphoma cell line in vitro. We have investigated the cytotoxicity of phototherapy on the small intestine of neonatal rat using conventional halogen-quartz device (conventional device) and blue light-emitting device (LED device) by measuring apoptotic cells. Four-day-old male Wistar rats were divided into three groups as follows: group 1, exposure to conventional device for 72 h; group 2, expo

Deficient base excision repair of oxidative DNA damage induced by methylene blue plus visible light in xeroderma pigmentosum group C fibroblasts.

Methylene blue plus visible light (MB+VL) results in oxidative DNA damage, producing predominantly 7,8-dihydroxy-8-oxoguanine and other single base modifications that are repaired by base excision repair (BER). AdCA17 is non-replicating recombinant human adenovirus that infects human cells and expresses the beta-galactosidase (beta-gal) reporter gene. We have examined host cell reactivation (HCR) of beta-gal activity for (MB+VL)-treated AdCA17 in cells from patients with xeoroderma pigmentosum from complementation group C (XP-C). HCR was substantially reduced in an SV40 transformed XP-C fibrob

The Effect of Berberine Follow by Blue Light Irradiation and Valproic Acid on the Growth Inhibition of MDA-MB-231 Breast Cancer Cells.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer after lung cancer in the world. Due to the anti-cancer properties of Berberine (Ber), in this study, the effect of combination therapy of Ber in the presence of blue LED irradiation and Valproic acid (Val) on the MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line was investigated. For this reason, after culturing the cells using different concentrations of Ber and Val, breast cancer cells were treated in both mono-treatment and combination therapy. In combination therapy, two modes were considered: (1) treatment with Val and then treatment with Ber in the dark or
