Resolving the electron bottleneck in denitrification for N2O mitigation: The roles of algal-mediated metabolic coupling and extracellular electron shuttling networks.

Excessive nitrogen (N) discharge from agriculture and industry causes severe ecological harm. Moreover, conventional nitrogen removal processes often generate N2O, adding to the environmental burden. While algal-bacterial consortium has emerged as a low-carbon alternative to address these issues, the bioenergetic mechanisms governing their N2O-mitigation performance remain poorly understood. In this study, a Chlorella sorokiniana-Paracoccus denitrificans consortium was established to clarify the mechanism underlying enhanced N₂O mitigation. The consortium achieved superior total nitrogen remov

Macrophage responses to and elevated antibody levels against Chlorovirus ATCV-1 in ALS patients.

Acanthocystis turfacea chlorella virus 1 (ATCV-1) is a giant virus that is part of the human oral microvirome. Previously we showed that ATCV-1 infects mouse macrophages, stimulates production of inflammatory cytokines, and accelerates motor neuron disease in the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) model SOD1-G93A transgenic mice. This, coupled with significantly elevated levels of serum IgG1 antibody to ATCV-1 in ALS patients compared with healthy controls, suggests involvement of ATCV-1 in ALS. Herein, using serum and CSF from a different ALS cohort we again show elevated antibodies to ATCV-

Anti-cancer effect of vitexin onto the CFPAC-1 and MIAPaCa-2 pancreatic cancer cells.

Microalgal food supplements are becoming increasingly popular due to their promising biological effects and high nutritional value, evidenced in in vitro, in vivo, and human studies. Some products of this kind have, however, raised controversies concerning their safety. At the same time, not much is known about the frequency of adverse events following the use of microalgal supplements, potential factors that may influence them, and general characteristics and behaviours of the consumer group. The present study aimed to fill this gap and surveyed a group of Polish consumers of microalgal produ

Use of rotating membranes for air-to-liquid mass transfer of carbon dioxide to enhance algal growth.

A novel air-to-liquid mass transfer system using wetted rotating membranes was designed to enhance air-to-liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) mass transfer efficiency. Traditional methods, such as sparging, are energy-intensive, but the rotating membrane reduces energy demands by optimising membrane wetting via rotational motion. Experimental tests were conducted using a small-scale system with a membrane width of 0.64 m and loop size of 2 to 5 m, with rotational speeds between 0.0 and 0.78 m/s. CO2 flux increased by up to 45%, achieving maximum uptake rate of 9.14 mg CO2/min/m2 at 100% speed. An empi

Enhanced Ecological Risk of PFOA Degradation Products: Insights from Concentration-Dependent Transcriptomics, Adverse Outcome Pathways, and Biomarker Verification.

The rapid advancement of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) degradation techniques aims to eliminate PFOA molecules and meet stringent water quality standards. However, the environmental risks of PFOA degradation products have rarely been studied. In this study, PFOA (C8) was photocatalytically degraded with N-CQDs/TiO2, producing C3-C7 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) and fluoride ions. We investigated bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of PFCAs in a model food web of Chlorella sp., Daphnia magna, and Danio rerio (zebrafish). Degradation-induced acidification of the solution increased the

Inhibition of dengue virus infection in vitro by fucoidan and polysaccharide extract from marine alga Sargassum spp.

Dengue virus (DENV) infection poses a global health threat, leading to severe conditions with the potential for critical outcomes. Currently, there are no specific drugs available whereas the vaccine does not offer comprehensive protection across all DENV serotypes. Therefore, the development of potential antiviral agents is necessary to reduce the severity risk and interrupt the transmission circuit. The search for effective antiviral agents against DENV has predominantly focused on natural resources, particularly those demonstrating diverse biological activities and high safety profiles. Cya

Determination of trace amounts of zinc by flame atomic absorption spectrometry after preconcentration with modified clinoptilolite zeolite.

Natural clinoptilolite was used as a sorbent material for solid-phase extraction and preconcentration of zinc. Clinoptilolite was first saturated with cadmium (II) and then modified with benzyldimethyltetradecylammonium chloride for increasing adsorption of 3-(2-arsenophenylazo)-4,5-dihydroxy-2,7-naphthalene disulfonic acid (neothorin). Zinc was quantitatively retained on the adsorbent by the column method in the pH range of 3.8-4.2 at a flow rate of 1 mL/min. It was eluted from the column with 5.0 mL 2 M nitric acid solution at a flow rate of 1 mL/min and determined by flame atomic absorption

Peptide‑calcium chelates from microalgae enhance calcium bioavailability and regulate osteogenic and osteoclastogenic signaling in ovariectomized mice.

Estrogen deficiency-induced postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) poses a global health burden requiring high-bioavailability nutritional therapies, while conventional calcium supplements exhibit poor absorption and gastrointestinal irritation; peptide‑calcium chelates stand out for superior uptake efficiency. In this study, we investigated the osteoprotective effects and molecular mechanisms of two microalgae-derived peptide-calcium chelates, specifically Chlorella pyrenoidosa peptide-calcium chelate (CP-Ca) and Arthrospira platensis peptide-calcium chelate (AP-Ca), using an ovariectomized (OVX)

Interfacial Engineering of Clay-Based Nanohybrids with pH-Responsive Network-like Behavior for Hair Photoprotection and Algal Growth Promotion.

The interfacial behavior of hybrid nanoparticles on biological substrates governs their functional performance. Here, we investigate how surface properties and colloidal stability dictate the pH-dependent adhesion of oxybenzone-loaded palygorskite nanohybrids to hair-a model biological interface. A series of hybrids with 5-50% oxybenzone loadings were prepared via melt impregnation. XRD and FTIR analyses confirm hydrogen bonding between oxybenzone and palygorskite, forming stable organic-inorganic hybrids. The colloidal stability of these nanohybrids varies non-monotonically with oxybenzone lo

Harnessing the gut-immune-joint axis: Oral microalgae-based thermoresponsive microspheres enhance intra-articular therapy for rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease primarily caused by an aberrant immune response that erroneously attacks the synovial joints, leading to inflammation and joint damage. Emerging evidence suggests that impaired intestinal barrier integrity and imbalanced gut microbiota play crucial roles in driving RA development, promoting systemic inflammation, and exacerbating joint pathology. Here we propose a synergistic therapeutic strategy that concurrently addresses both the systemic gut-immune axis and local joint inflammation. This approach integrates intra-articular injection

Biodeterioration Control of the Longhu Pagoda Stone Heritage, China: Identification of Deteriogens and Evaluation of Biocidal Efficacy.

Longhu Pagoda, a national key cultural heritage site located at the southern foot of Hushan Mountain in Liubao, Jinan, Shandong Province, is a masterpiece of Tang-dynasty stone pagoda architecture and a core component of the Shentong Temple heritage complex alongside the Four Gates Pagoda. The pagoda features a distinctive "Tang-dynasty body, Song-dynasty crown" structure: its stone base and main body, carved with intricate high-reliefs of dragons, tigers, heavenly kings, arhats, and apsaras, date back to the late Tang Dynasty (717-845 AD), while the brick eaves and roof were reconstructed dur

The effect of peroral administration of toxic cyanobacteria on laboratory rats (Rattus norvegicus var. alba).

OBJECTIVES: The toxic cyanobacteria are a serious problem for water supply systems, recreation, and agriculture. Cyanobacteria produce numerous bioactive compounds including microcystins - the most studied cyanobacterial hepatotoxins. Only rare studies addressed realistic situation, i.e. impact of MCs accumulated in the fish tissues on the overall physiology. The aim of the present study was to provide a model simulation of the simple food chain for evaluation of impacts of cyanobacteria on the rat physiology under different exposure scenario. METHODS: Experimental rats were fed with food wit

Growth parameters of microalgae tolerant to high levels of carbon dioxide in batch and continuous-flow photobioreactors.

Microalgae can be cultured in photobioreactors to sequester carbon dioxide and produce potentially valuable biomaterials. The goal of the present study was to identify and utilize microalgal strains that are capable of tolerating up to 20% CO2 (gas phase) concentrations under variable light or flue-gas blend conditions and reactor configurations to produce biomass. Scenedesmus sp. and Chlorella sp., both cultured from a Sonoran desert mineral spring, grew well and tolerated exposure to a gas mixture containing up to 20% CO2 applied continuously in batch reactors to the culture. Experiments wer

Industrial effluent driven lipid induction in marine microalgae under mixotrophic growth: Comparative evaluation of defined carbon sources and non-sterile effluent environments.

The use of marine microalgae as a viable platform for generating renewable fuel through the biomass has sustainable production due to its fast growth rate, lipid content and the ability to assimilate various carbon compounds. The possibility of using unsterilized industrial wastewater as asource of carbon and enhancing microalgal biomass and lipids production is hardly known, especially when contrasted to pure carbon sources and sterilized wastewaters. This study evaluates the mixotrophic growth performance and lipid productivity of two marine microalgae strains, Chlorella vulgaris BDUG 91771

A laboratory system for rearing Simuliidae (Diptera) under simulated lotic environments.

BACKGROUND: Black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are ecologically important components of lotic ecosystems and a public health concern due to their aggressive biting behavior, pathogen transmission, and induction of allergic and inflammatory reactions in humans and livestock. Despite their relevance, experimental research on Simuliidae remains limited compared with other dipteran vectors, largely because their immature stages require specific aquatic conditions that are difficult to reproduce in the laboratory. Larval development depends on continuous water flow, high dissolved oxygen, and suspen
