The purpose of the study is to estimate the population size under a homogeneous truncated count model and under model contaminations via the Horvitz-Thompson approach on the basis of a count capture-recapture experiment. The proposed estimator is based on a mixture of zero-truncated Poisson distributions. The benefit of using the proposed model is statistical inference of the long-tailed or skewed distributions and the concavity of the likelihood function with strong results available on the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (NPMLE). The results of comparisons, for finding the appropr

The kin-cohort study, an embedded retrospective cohort of first-degree relatives of probands, has been used frequently in conjunction with case-control studies to evaluate penetrance of high-risk genotypes. However, in principle, the kin-cohort approach can be used in conjunction with a case-control study in which family history data are carefully recorded to examine and validate the observed association of any candidate genotype with disease. Its utility for this purpose is governed by the relative efficiency of the kin-cohort analysis to test hypotheses about the relevant genotype-disease od

Epidemiological models and immunological models have been studied largely independently. However, the two processes (between- and within-host interactions) occur jointly and models that couple the two processes may generate new biological insights. Particularly, the threshold conditions for disease control may be dramatically different when compared with those generated from the epidemiological or immunological models separately. An example is considered in this paper for an environmentally driven infectious disease such as Toxoplasma gondii. The model explicitly couples the within-host and be

The correlation between cholera epidemics and climatic drivers, in particular seasonal tropical rainfall, has been studied in a variety of contexts owing to its documented relevance. Several mechanistic models of cholera transmission have included rainfall as a driver by focusing on two possible transmission pathways: either by increasing exposure to contaminated water (e.g. due to worsening sanitary conditions during water excess), or water contamination by freshly excreted bacteria (e.g. due to washout of open-air defecation sites or overflows). Our study assesses the explanatory power of th

Dengue is an arboviral disease of high public health relevance, characterized by pronounced temporal variability, nonlinearity, and recurrent outbreaks, which pose challenges to epidemiological surveillance and decision-making. This study evaluated the performance of machine learning methods for short-term forecasting of the weekly dengue morbidity rate in the 27 Brazilian capital cities, comprising the 26 state capitals and Brasília, Federal District, with horizons up to 4 weeks. Epidemiological, climatic, and socioeconomic data were compiled for these capital cities and used to compare a Gat

Age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are associated with substantial mortality and morbidity. The etiology and pathogenesis of these diseases are not fully understood, which impedes the development of new therapies. Emerging epidemiological evidence has revealed that environmental toxicants substantially contribute to the pathogenesis of diseases through mechanisms involving compromised endogenous detoxification systems. This review synthesizes epidemiological and clinical evidence from human studies elucidating the crucial role o

While the symptomology of underactive bladder (UAB) may imply a primary dysfunction of the detrusor muscle, insights into pathophysiology indicate that both myogenic and neurogenic mechanisms need to be considered. Due to lack of proper animal models, the current understanding of the UAB pathophysiology is limited, and much of what is known about the clinical etiology of the condition has been derived from epidemiological data. We hereby review current state of the art in the understanding of the pathophysiology of and animal models used to study the UAB.

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a severe natural focal infectious disease that remains a major public health concern in Shandong Province, China. Understanding the epidemiological characteristics of HFRS and forecasting its incidence are crucial to provide guidance for policymaking and implement timely interventions against this disease.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined the long-term epidemiological characteristics of HFRS based on 15 years of surveillance data; the analysis used 4 time series models to predict its incidence trends. The aim was to provide a scientifi

Routine use of genetic data in healthcare is much-discussed, yet little is known about its performance in epidemiological models including traditional risk factors. Using severe COVID-19 as an exemplar, we explore the integration of polygenic risk scores (PRS) into disease models alongside sociodemographic and clinical variables. PRS were optimized for 23 clinical variables and related traits previously-associated with severe COVID-19 in up to 450,449 UK Biobank participants, and tested in 9,560 individuals diagnosed in the pre-vaccination era. Associations were further adjusted for (i) sociod

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies of disease exposure risk are frequently based on observational, cross-sectional data, and use statistical approaches as crucial tools for formalising causal processes and making predictions of exposure risks. However, an acknowledged limitation of traditional models is that the inferred relationships are correlational, cannot easily distinguish direct from indirect determinants of disease risk, and are often considerable simplifications of complex interrelationships. This may be particularly important when attempting to infer causality in patterns of co-infe

OBJECTIVES: The taxonic versus dimensional status of mood symptoms has been the subject of debate among mental health professionals. Conventional diagnostic models suggest that mood disorders are categorical; however, the inability of categorical models to adequately account for subthreshold unipolar and bipolar presentations and the heterotypic continuity of symptoms in unipolar and bipolar cases has resulted in growing support for dimensional views. The current study sought to evaluate the relative viabilities of categorical and dimensional models of mood symptoms within a taxometric framewo

Begomoviruses are among the most destructive plant viruses, causing substantial yield losses across diverse cropping systems. Their epidemiological success is driven by high genetic plasticity, broad host range, and efficient transmission by the whitefly vector Bemisia tabaci. Traditional epidemiological models based on the classical disease triangle (virus-host-vector) fail to fully capture the ecological and evolutionary complexity of begomovirus pathosystems. Increasing evidence highlights the critical role of non-cultivated plants, particularly weeds, as persistent reservoirs that maintain

Distal femoral periprosthetic fractures (DFPF) are an increasingly prevalent complication following total knee arthroplasty (TKA), representing a significant challenge to the orthopedic community. As the volume of primary and revision TKA continues to rise globally, a clear understanding of the epidemiological landscape and standardized classification are paramount for appropriate treatment, clinical communication, and research. This review provides a focused analysis of the current epidemiological propensities of DFPF, identifying the specific patient populations and temporal trends that defi

The complex and unprecedented Ebola epidemic ongoing in West Africa has highlighted the need to review the epidemiological characteristics of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) as well as our current understanding of the transmission dynamics and the effect of control interventions against Ebola transmission. Here we review key epidemiological data from past Ebola outbreaks and carry out a comparative review of mathematical models of the spread and control of Ebola in the context of past outbreaks and the ongoing epidemic in West Africa. We show that mathematical modeling offers useful insights into th

Process models offer opportunities to explore the effectiveness of different programme and policy alternatives by varying input behaviours and model parameters to reflect programmatic/policy effects. The Asian Epidemic Model (AEM) has been designed to reflect the primary groups and transmission modes driving HIV transmission in Asia. The user adjusts AEM fitting parameters until HIV prevalence outputs from the model agree with observed epidemiological trends. The AEM resultant projections are closely tied to the epidemiological and behavioural data in the country. In Thailand and Cambodia they

Epidemiological evidence suggests that one's risk of being diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD)-such as autism, ADHD, or schizophrenia-increases significantly if their mother had a viral or bacterial infection during the first or second trimester of pregnancy. Despite this well-known data, little is known about how developing neural systems are perturbed by events such as early-life immune activation. One theory is that the maternal immune response disrupts neural processes important for typical fetal and postnatal development, which can subsequently result in specific and overla

Introduction: Understanding how HIV epidemics are likely to behave in the future is key to informing HIV response strategies in low-income countries. Up-to-date HIV epidemiological estimates are important for policy decision- making, but surveillance data can be out of date. This study compared forecasts from HIV epidemiological models. Methods: Five independent modelling groups (EMOD-HIV, Goals, HIV Synthesis, Optima and PopART-IBM) calibrated their mathematical models to datapoints provided by the Ministry of Health and produced several indicators of the HIV epidemic in Zimbabwe for the perio

Evidence supports the role of vitamin D in various conditions of development and ageing. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) is the best indicator for current vitamin D status. However, the cost of its measurement can be prohibitive in epidemiological research. We developed and validated multivariable regression models that quantified the relationships between vitamin D determinants, measured through an in-person interview, and serum 25(OH)D concentrations. A total of 200 controls participating in a population-based case-control study in Montreal, Canada, provided a blood specimen and complete
