Animal models of hidden hearing loss: Does auditory-nerve-fiber loss cause real-world listening difficulties?

Afferent innervation of the cochlea by the auditory nerve declines during aging and potentially after sound overexposure, producing the common pathology known as cochlear synaptopathy. Auditory-nerve-fiber loss is difficult to detect with the clinical audiogram and has been proposed to cause 'hidden hearing loss' including impaired speech-in-noise perception. While evidence that auditory-nerve-fiber loss causes hidden hearing loss in humans is controversial, behavioral animal models hold promise to rigorously test this hypothesis because neural lesions can be induced and histologically validat

Intracortical circuits amplify sound-evoked activity in primary auditory cortex following systemic injection of salicylate in the rat.

A high dose of sodium salicylate temporarily induces tinnitus, mild hearing loss, and possibly hyperacusis in humans and other animals. Salicylate has well-established effects on cochlear function, primarily resulting in the moderate reduction of auditory input to the brain. Despite decreased peripheral sensitivity and output, salicylate induces a paradoxical enhancement of the sound-evoked field potential at the level of the primary auditory cortex (A1). Previous electrophysiologic studies have begun to characterize changes in thalamorecipient layers of A1; however, A1 is a complex neural cir

The rat as a model for studying noise injury and otoprotection.

A major challenge for those studying noise-induced injury pre-clinically is the selection of an animal model. Noise injury models are particularly relevant in an age when people are constantly bombarded by loud noise due to occupation and/or recreation. The rat has been widely used for noise-related morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular assessment. Noise exposure resulting in a temporary (TTS) or permanent threshold shift (PTS) yields trauma in peripheral and central auditory related pathways. While the precise nature of noise-related injuries continues to be delineated, bot

Aggressiveness, violence, homicidality, homicide, and Lyme disease.

BACKGROUND: No study has previously analyzed aggressiveness, homicide, and Lyme disease (LD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective LD chart reviews analyzed aggressiveness, compared 50 homicidal with 50 non-homicidal patients, and analyzed homicides. RESULTS: Most aggression with LD was impulsive, sometimes provoked by intrusive symptoms, sensory stimulation or frustration and was invariably bizarre and senseless. About 9.6% of LD patients were homicidal with the average diagnosis delay of 9 years. Postinfection findings associated with homicidality that separated from the non-homicidal grou

Salicylate-induced frequency-map reorganization in four subfields of the mouse auditory cortex.

Salicylate is the active ingredient in aspirin, and in high-doses it is used as an experimental tool to induce transient hearing loss, tinnitus, and hyperacusis. These salicylate-induced perceptual disturbances are associated with tonotopic-map reorganization and neural activity modulation, and such neural correlates have been examined in the central auditory pathway, including the auditory cortex (AC). Although previous studies have reported that salicylate induces increases in noise-burst-evoked neural responses and reorganization of tonotopic maps in the primary AC, little is known about th

Early maladaptive schemas and misophonia: Incremental contributions beyond personality traits and general psychopathology.

Misophonia is a sound sensitivity disorder characterized by heightened emotional, physiological, and behavioral reactions to specific auditory stimuli. Although prior research has linked misophonia to maladaptive personality traits and internalizing symptoms, the role of early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) remains underexplored. The present study examined the associations between misophonia severity, EMSs, personality trait domains, and psychological symptoms, and tested whether EMSs accounted for incremental variance beyond these factors. A total of 144 adults (72 with misophonia and 72 matched

Long-term assessment of auditory changes resulting from a single noise exposure associated with non-occupational activities.

We examined the long-term sequelae in both ears of 42 patients who reported the occurrence of auditory changes resulting from a single exposure to intense sound levels during non-occupational activities. We divided these patients into two groups, based upon noise exposures of either continuous duration or single high-energy impulse. Audiometric data were available for each of these subjects shortly after their noise-exposure events and follow-up examinations took place more than one year after the noise occurrence (range: 1-16 years). The initial median hearing loss for the continuous-type noi

Quinine reduces the dynamic range of the human auditory system.

The aim of the study was to evaluate and quantify quinine-induced changes in the human auditory dynamic range, as a model for cochlear hearing loss. Six otologically normal volunteers (21-40 years old) received quinine hydrochloride (15 mg/kg body weight) in two identical oral doses and one intravenous infusion. Refined hearing tests were performed monaurally at threshold, at moderate hearing levels and at high hearing levels. Quinine induced a maximal pure-tone threshold shift of 23 dB (1000-2000 Hz). The increase in the psychoacoustical click threshold agreed with an increase in the detectio

[Structural changes in the auditory field in relation to age].

Using a category scale we measured the loudness of narrow band noises experienced in 3 age groups (15-23, 33-45, and 60-75 years old). The narrow band noises had center frequencies between .125 and 8 kHz with sound pressure levels of 60, 75, and 90 dB each. We found the well-known high-frequency loss. However, we also found a hypersensitivity at middle frequencies correlated with high-frequency loss. The presumable causes of this hypersensitivity and its consequences for hearing aid fitting will be discussed.

Noise: Acoustic Trauma and Tinnitus, the US Military Experience.

Tinnitus is commonly experienced by military Service Members and Veterans, especially by the newest generation who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. When patients seek health care for tinnitus, it is important to determine its type, check for comorbid conditions that might be triggering or exacerbating the condition, and to address its functional and psychosocial effects. Otolaryngologists are usually the first health care professional to evaluate a patient with tinnitus, and it is essential to provide appropriate referrals for this high-burden condition. Noise-induced tinnitus is multifaceted;

Use of cluster analysis to validate IHS diagnostic criteria for migraine and tension-type headache.

Cluster analysis was used to validate headache diagnostic criteria of the International Headache Society (IHS). Structured diagnostic interviews were conducted on 443 headache sufferers from a community sample, which was randomly split to allow replication. Hierarchical cluster analysis of symptoms in both subsamples revealed two distinct (P<.001) clusters: (1) unilateral pulsating pain, pain aggravated by activity, and photophobia and phonophobia, and (2) bilateral pressing/tightening pain, mild to moderate intensity, and absence of nausea/vomiting. These clusters were consistent with IHS mig

Stapedius reflex and EABR thresholds in experienced users of the Nucleus cochlear implant.

Evoked auditory brainstem responses (EABR) and stapedius reflex thresholds were established in 7 experienced users of the Nucleus cochlear implant. Even using biphasic 400 microseconds/phase clicks for the EABR, responses were observed in only 5 patients; no stapedius reflex (SR) was seen in 3 patients, 2 of whom had a history of middle-ear disorder. The EABR threshold varied widely between subjective threshold and uncomfortable loudness level (ULL) for the same stimulus. The average SR threshold was found somewhat more consistently at 66% of the dynamic range between threshold and ULL, but gr

PTSD and Audio Vestibular Symptoms: A Two-Way Street Driven by the Amygdala? A Speculative Hypothesis.

Background/Objective: Auditory and vestibular (AV) symptoms can be considered functional neurological disorders (FND) when they do not arise from structural abnormalities. These symptoms can arise as expressions of underlying neuropsychological or psychiatric conditions, yet they may also play a role in precipitating or maintaining such disorders. This systematic review aimed at exploring the prevalence of AV symptoms in post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) as well as to understand if they correlate with each other. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the literature including PubMed
