Acute gonadotroph and somatotroph hormonal suppression after traumatic brain injury.

Hormonal dysfunction is a known consequence of moderate and severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). In this study we determined the incidence, time course, and clinical correlates of acute post-TBI gonadotroph and somatotroph dysfunction. Patients had daily measurement of serum luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone, estradiol, growth hormone, and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) for up to 10 days post-injury. Values below the fifth percentile of a healthy cohort were considered abnormal, as were non-measurable growth hormone (GH) values. Outcome measures w

IGF-1 as a Biomarker for Symptom Severity in Adult Traumatic Brain Injury: Evidence from an Observational Study.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI)-related growth hormone deficiency is often undertreated, despite documented physical, metabolic, and neuropsychiatric effects. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), with neuroreceptors located in brain regions responsible for learning, memory, and mood, regulates cerebral blood flow, neurogenesis, and neuroplasticity. The aim of this study was to determine associations between IGF-1 levels and post-TBI symptom severity, anxiety, and depression. This retrospective observational study at an Academic Brain Injury Center included participants evaluated 3-12 months post-T

The Association Between Traumatic Brain Injury and Accelerated Fracture Healing: A Study on the Effects of Growth Factors and Cytokines.

Evidence suggests that some systemic and local factors, including cytokines and growth factors in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), can play an essential role in accelerating fracture healing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate serum levels of some inflammatory cytokines and growth factors in patients with fracture and TBI as well as healthy subjects. In this study, a total number of 30 patients with a femoral fracture, 30 cases with TBI, 30 patients with TBI and a femoral fracture (fracture + TBI group), and 30 healthy subjects were recruited. Regional levels of glucose, amino acids, high energy phosphates, and cyclic nucleotides in the central nervous system during hypoglycemic stupor and behavioral recovery.

The effects of insulin-induced hypoglycemic stupor and subsequent treatment with glucose on mouse cerebral cortical, cerebellar and brain stem levels of glucose, glycogen, ATP, phosphocreatine, glutamate, aspartate and GABA and on cerebral cortical and cerebellar levels of cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP have been measured. Hypoglycemia decreased glucose, glycogen and glutamate levels and had no effect on ATP levels in all three regions of brain. GABA levels were decreased only in cerebellum. Aspartate levels rose in cerebral cortex and brain stem, and creatine phosphate increased in cerebral cortex

Effect of Growth Hormone on Neuropsychological Outcomes and Quality of Life of Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review.

One of the most devastating chronic consequences of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is cognitive impairment. One of the possible underlying causes is growth hormone deficiency (GHD) caused by TBI-induced hypopituitarism. Currently, TBI patients are not routinely screened for pituitary function, and there are no standard therapies when GHD is diagnosed. Further, the possible positive effects of GH replacement on cognitive function and quality of life after TBI are not well established. We aimed to assess the current knowledge regarding the effect of GH therapy on cognitive function and quality of

Psychometric Properties and Dimensionality of the Greek Version of the Hypoglycemic Confidence Scale.

Background and purpose: The prevalence of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is rising at an alarming rate and is projected to continue increasing in the coming years. The primary approach to preventing diabetes-related complications in individuals with T1D is the exogenous administration of insulin. However, this method can sometimes lead to hypoglycemia, a condition with a wide range of symptoms, including loss of consciousness, seizures, coma, and, in severe cases, death. This study aims to present the psychometric properties of the Greek translation of the Hypoglycemic Confidence Scale (HCS).

Development of an artificial intelligence system to identify hypoglycaemia via ECG in adults with type 1 diabetes: protocol for data collection under controlled and free-living conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Hypoglycaemia is a harmful potential complication in people with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and can be exacerbated in patients receiving treatment, such as insulin therapies, by the very interventions aiming to achieve optimal blood glucose levels. Symptoms can vary greatly, including, but not limited to, trembling, palpitations, sweating, dry mouth, confusion, seizures, coma, brain damage or even death if untreated. A pilot study with healthy (euglycaemic) participants previously demonstrated that hypoglycaemia can be detected non-invasively with artificial intelligence (AI

Anti-interleukin-21 antibody and liraglutide for the preservation of β-cell function in adults with recent-onset type 1 diabetes: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 2 trial.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes is characterised by progressive loss of functional β-cell mass, necessitating insulin treatment. We aimed to investigate the hypothesis that combining anti-interleukin (IL)-21 antibody (for low-grade and transient immunomodulation) with liraglutide (to improve β-cell function) could enable β-cell survival with a reduced risk of complications compared with traditional immunomodulation. METHODS: This randomised, parallel-group, placebo-controlled, double-dummy, double-blind, phase 2 trial was done at 94 sites (university hospitals and medical centres) in 17 countries
