Eosinophilic colitis (EC) is a rare clinical entity. Advanced cases with severe inflammation may develop severe abdominal pain and distension, malabsorption, intestinal obstruction, and even GI hemorrhage. Once diagnosed early, EC responds to steroid therapy. We report the case of a 46-year-old male who presented with acute-onset left upper abdominal pain, enlargement of the right scrotal sac, and hemoperitoneum. A contrast-enhanced CT scan of the abdomen revealed an irregular hypoechoic lesion measuring approximately 6.5 × 4.8 cm, likely a transverse mesocolon hematoma in the epigastric regio

An 80s male, with a medical history of hypertension, hyperuricemia, and atrial fibrillation, visited our emergency outpatient department with vomiting and diarrhea as the chief complaint in August 2017. The blood examination revealed a high level of inflammatory reaction. The plain abdominal CT revealed fluid retention contacting the small intestine and intraabdominal free gas. We diagnosed the case as a small intestinal perforation, following which we performed emergency surgery. The small intestine was perforated, and an abscess cavity was formed between the transverse mesocolon and mesenter

After gastrojejunostomy, a small space can occur between the jejunum at the anastomosis site, the transverse mesocolon, and retroperitoneum, which may cause an intestinal hernia. This report presents a rare case of intestinal ischemic necrosis caused by retroanastomotic hernia after subtotal gastrectomy. A 56-year-old male was admitted to Kangwon National University Hospital with melena, abdominal pain, and nausea. His only relevant medical history was gastrectomy due to stomach cancer. Endoscopic findings revealed subtotal gastrectomy with Billroth-II reconstruction and a bluish edematous muc

BACKGROUND: Intestinal obstruction is a significant and increasingly recognized complication after laparoscopic and open gastric bypass.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of 3,463 patients who had gastric bypass during the study period from July 1997 to December 2004 at a single bariatric center were evaluated. 1,120 patients had retrocolic, retrogastric Roux limb placement and 2,343 patients had antecolic, antegastric.
RESULTS: 40 patients had 44 intestinal obstructions (1.27%). The onset ranged from 1 day to 7 years postoperatively (mean 16.9 months). Internal hernia at the transv

BACKGROUND: Complicated pancreatic inflammatory diseases are often life-threatening, multifocal, and multibacterial disorders. Untreated, these lesions often prove fatal. The purpose of the study is to describe interventional radiologic techniques for diagnosis and treatment of complicated peripancreatic fluid collections.
METHODS: Between January 1994 and December 1995, 17 patients with abdominal fluid collection from complicated acute pancreatitis underwent percutaneous drainage following initial diagnosis with computed tomography (CT). These patients required multiple CT examinations, mult

1. Recordings have been made from ninety single afferent units in the hypogastric and lumbar splanchnic nerves of the cat. 2. The majority of units examined had properties similar to those previously described in the splanchnic nerve: they were slowly adapting mechanoreceptors with one to six punctate mechanosensitive sites distributed mainly along blood vessels as they approached the viscera in peritoneal ligaments; they had a wide range of mechanical thresholds and conduction velocities in the range 0.5-24 m s-1. 3. Receptive fields were found over the bladder base or its peritoneal ligament

CONTEXT: Colorectal cancer represents the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Emerging evidence suggests distinct biological differences between right-sided colon cancer (RCC) and left-sided colon cancer (LCC), although their prognostic significance remains controversial.
AIMS: To compare clinicopathological features and oncological outcomes between RCC and LCC following mesocolic resection and to identify independent prognostic factors.
SETTING AND DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a tertiary center between January 2010 and December 2020.

INTRODUCTION: There is growing evidence supporting complete mesocolic excision as the optimal surgical approach for right-sided colon cancer to improve oncologic outcomes in comparison with conventional surgical resection. Although the feasibility of a minimally invasive approach to complete mesocolic excision has been reported, obesity has been associated with increased difficulty for finding the correct plane for dissection and delineating the vascular anatomy. We describe a novel approach with early identification of and dissection along the superior mesenteric vein during robotic complete

Mesenteric trauma is one of the possible injuries caused by the use of seat belts in case of motor vehicle crash. We report here a rare case of rectal bleeding by rupture of a mesosigmoid haematoma. An emergent laparotomy revealed a mesosigmoid haematoma with a centimetric rectal perforation. The wearing of safety belts added some specific blunt abdominal trauma, which directly depends on lap-and-sash belts. Mesenteric injuries are found out up to 5% of blunt abdominal traumas. "Seat belt mark" leads the surgical team to strongly suspect an intra-abdominal trauma. When "seat belt mark" sign is

The middle colic artery usually arises from the superior mesenteric artery, but in rare cases it may arise from the coeliac trunk or its branches. The aim of this study was to investigate variant origins of the middle colic artery on computed tomography and anatomical dissection. Variant middle colic arteries were identified on computed tomography as part of an ongoing study investigating anatomical variations of vessels of the upper abdomen. Three-dimensional reconstructions were made to demonstrate the variant findings. Cadaveric dissections were performed as part of a routine dissection cou

When pancreatic head cancer invades the superior mesenteric artery (SMA), attempts at curative resection are aborted. Preoperative imaging diagnostics to determine the surgical curability have yet to surpass the intraoperative information acquired via inspection, palpation, and trial dissection. Pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) is a standard measure for treating periampullary cancers. In conventional PD, SMA invasion is usually identified by dissecting the retroportal lamina, which connects the uncinate process and SMA nerve plexus after dividing the neck of the pancreas. During PD for pancreatic he

BACKGROUND: Petersen's space hernia is caused by the herniation of intestinal loops through the defect between the small bowel limbs, the transverse mesocolon and the retroperitoneum, after any type of gastrojejunostomy. The laparoscopic approach facilitates the occurrence of this type of hernia, due to the lack of post-operative adhesions which prevent bowel motility and hence, herniation.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 46 year-old male submitted to an open antrectomy and vagotomy with a Roux-en-Y reconstruction six-years before, for the treatment of bleeding gastric ulcer. He presented

After dissection of the abdominal cavity of a 59-year-old male, a long artery, extending from the hepatic artery to the transverse colon, and comprised proximally within the neck of the pancreas and distally within the transverse mesocolon, has been detected. This "pancreato-colic" artery (P-C A) was 13 cm in length and 4 mm in diameter at the origin. Its mesocolic part (2.5 mm in diameter) contributed to the formation of the marginal arcade. No middle colic artery from the superior mesenteric was observed. Thus, the transverse colon was supplied by the distal part of the P-C A. Considering bo

We recently revised a redundant colon conduit in a boy who was born with isolated esophageal atresia. In view of the paucity of reports dealing with correction of this common complication of esophageal replacement, it seemed appropriate to report our experience. Because of effective medical therapy of acid peptic disease, patients who formerly required conduit replacement may now be candidates for revision; however, the medical literature does not specify when conduit revision, as opposed to conduit replacement, is indicated; also, no guidance is provided regarding what constitutes effective o

We experienced a rare case of spindle cell carcinoma of the pancreas. The patient was a 74-year-old man who complained of abdominal pain and loss of weight. Ultrasonographic scans revealed a hypoechoic solid mass in the head of the pancreas, 4 cm in diameter, with a high echoic spot suggestive of central necrosis or hemorrhage. The mass was hypodense on enhanced computed tomographic scans and hypovascular on angiograms. At laparotomy, the tumor had invaded to the mesocolon, but dissemination and distant metastasis were not found. We therefore performed pylorus-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy

Partial obstruction was the cause of delayed gastric emptying in 12 patients after a Roux-en-Y gastrojejunostomy in a consecutive personal series of 42 patients between 1975 and 1989. Four types of obstruction were identified. Type I was due to a kinked loop of jejunum where it passed through the mesocolon. Type II had the anastomosis too high on the gastric pouch, type III was due to an obstructing marginal ulcer, and type IV had a pouchlike deformity develop in the upper jejunum at the anastomosis that gradually compressed the outflow tract. No patient had stenosis of the anastomosis. The up

It is well known that intersigmoid hernia (ISH) is a rare condition. Here we describe our experience of laparoscopic surgery for small-bowel obstruction (SBO) due to ISH after sufficient decompression involving long-tube insertion.A 45-year-old woman with no history of abdominal surgery visited our hospital with epigastric pain. She was diagnosed as having SBO and underwent long-tube insertion as conservative therapy. However, her symptoms did not improve. Gastrografin contrast enema via the long-tube demonstrated a beak sign in the lower left abdomen and CT showed incarcerated small bowel was

A 34-year-old man was admitted in our department with a 3 months history of epigastric pain, abdominal distension and tenderness. Helical computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging showed a 10 cm low-density fluid-filled polilobate cystic lesion with internal septations and calcifications located between the left lobe of the liver, shorter gastric curvature, pancreas and mesocolon. Laparoscopic exploration was performed. Macroscopically the lesion was a unilocular serous cyst with a thick fibrous wall. Histopathology revealed a thin fibrous wall with a single layer of flattened to
