In the Netherlands, work related upper-limb disorders are called Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI). RSI is not a diagnosis but a catch-all term for symptoms and signs located in the neck, upper back, shoulder, arm, elbow, hand, wrist and fingers. These symptoms may include pain, stiffness, tingling, clumsiness, loss of co-ordination, loss of strength, skin discoloration and temperature differences. Each year, 8% of working Dutch citizens take time off work due to RSI symptoms. Although the number of people claiming disability benefit due to RSI is limited, this figure has risen consecutively ov

Anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are disorders characterized by aberrant patterns of feeding behavior and weight regulation, and disturbances in attitudes toward weight and shape and the perception of body shape. Emerging data support the possibility that substantial biologic and genetic vulnerabilities contribute to the pathogenesis of AN and BN. Multiple neuroendocrine and neurotransmitter abnormalities have been documented in AN and BN, but for the most part, these disturbances are state-related and tend to normalize after symptom remission and weight restoration; however, ele

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the prevalence of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) among patients with eating disorders (ED).
METHOD: 66 female inpatients who met the DSM-IV criteria for anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) participated in the study. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM III-R diagnoses (SCID), the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI), the revised 90-item Symptom-Checklist (SCL-90-R), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) were carried out.
RESULTS: Twelve patients (18.2%) met the DSM-III-R criteria for lifetime OCD: 7 had a cur

The 3 eating disorders--anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating--occur at a frequency far greater than usually realized. Anorexia has been found to be present in up to 1% of teenage and young adult women, whereas estimates of bulimia have ranged up to 5%. The prevalence of binge-eating disorder is not known, but may be higher than bulimia. Anorexia nervosa is characterized by weight loss, body image disturbance, and a morbid fear of weight gain. Bulimia nervosa is characterized by binge eating and compensatory purging by vomiting; use of laxatives, diuretics, or diet pills; exercis

The assumption is tested that women scoring high on dimensions of coping pattern termed "need for control," which underlies several of the components of Type A behavior, are at increased risk of ischemic cerebrovascular disease. Consecutively admitted patients to medical wards, nineteen with ischemic cerebrovascular disease, were compared with nineteen patients with non-arteriovascular disease and nineteen healthy females doing volunteer hospital work. "Need for control" was assessed by a psychometric test based on forty-five dichotomous items defining six unidimensional scales. The Bortner Ty

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to explore potential overlap of the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder and eating disorders.
METHOD: The authors administered a structured, self-rating scale, the Eating Disorder Inventory, to 59 outpatients at an obsessive-compulsive disorder clinic and to 60 sex-matched normal volunteers. The Eating Disorder Inventory has been previously validated as a reliable measure of the specific cognitive and behavioral dimensions of the psychopathology typical of patients with eating disorders. The scores of the patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and

INTRODUCTION: In metacognitive theory, thought fusion beliefs, beliefs about rituals, and beliefs about stop signals predict obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The number of controlled studies using specific scales to assess these three belief domains in different cultures is limited.
METHODS: The comparison sample consisted of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (n: 106) and control (n: 200) group. Participants filled out the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised form, Penn State Worry Scale, Obsessive Beliefs Scale-44, Thought Fusion Inventory, Beliefs about Rituals Inventory and Stop

Shift workers face a heightened risk of insomnia. Recent research has yielded promising insights, but further progress is necessary to better treat insomnia in this group. The present pilot study evaluates how different characteristics impact sleep in shift workers to develop an innovative therapeutic approach. An online survey was administered to an ad hoc sample of N = 225 (112 shift workers), and correlations were calculated between sleep variables and specific characteristics (e.g., psychological impairment, personality traits, sleep-related behavior, attitudes towards sleep and shift work

INTRODUCTION: Trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are associated with high rates of co-occurring personality pathology, including Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD). OCPD is characterized by rigidity and perfectionism, leading to internalized distress, interpersonal difficulties, and lower quality of life (QOL). Individuals with OCPD often report high levels of anger, which may exacerbate distress and interpersonal issues. However, the relationship between OCPD, anger, and QOL in trauma-exposed Veterans remains understudied.

OBJECTIVE: Restrictive eating behavior in anorexia nervosa (AN) is often characterized by rigidity, dichotomous thinking, and cognitive inflexibility. These traits are also central to obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). The current study assessed whether OCPD traits among patients with AN were associated with the severity of illness or short-term treatment outcome.
METHOD: Presence of OCPD traits were measured among hospitalized adults and adolescents as well as healthy peers (HC), using the Pathological Obsessive Compulsive Personality Scale (POPS). In addition to comparing gro

BACKGROUND: The obsession with healthy eating, as well as clinical eating disorders and health anxiety, is becoming increasingly common worldwide. Health anxiety, characterised by undue relevance about one's health and reinforced by perfectionism, is a significant problem requiring intervention in individuals with orthorexia nervosa (ON) and other eating disorders.
OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to examine the relationship between orthorexia nervosa, eating disorder and health anxiety in adults.
METHODS: A total of 654 people (M = 211, F = 443) aged 19-50 answered sociodemographic quest

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The previous literature on purging behavior in eating disorders (EDs) suggests an overall more complicated clinical picture for individuals with this symptomatology. So far, no studies have analyzed the possible differences between the specific types of purging among ED inpatients.
METHODS: A clinical sample of 302 inpatients with EDs was classified according to no purging behaviors, vomiting, the abuse of laxatives, and both vomiting and the abuse of laxatives. Participants completed the following questionnaires: the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), F

BACKGROUND: Across populations, findings associate impulsivity, behavioral disinhibition, or hostility with reduced central serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine: 5-HT) activity and increased likelihood of childhood abuse. Inconsistently, findings associate compulsivity, behavioral inhibition, or anxiousness with elevated 5-HT neurotransmission. We explored relationships among measures of 5-HT system functioning, behavioral inhibition/disinhibition, and childhood abuse in women with bulimia-spectrum eating syndromes.
METHOD: In 73 bulimic (body mass index [kg/m2] under 30, binge eating at least once

BACKGROUND: AI is rapidly transforming clinical nursing, promising administrative relief and decision support. However, the frontline reality presents a double-edged sword effect, where technological empowerment is frequently offset by novel occupational burdens and technostress.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to theoretically deconstruct the bidirectional impacts of AI application among clinical nurses and identify buffering conditions, using the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) theoretical framework.
METHODS: A descriptive qualitative study was conducted across multiple general hospitals in mainla

University students may be particularly vulnerable to experiencing gambling-related problems. This study investigated the rate of screening positive for gambling problems in a UK university and associated factors, including demographic, mental health, and trans-diagnostic variables. We analysed cross-sectional data from the Nurture-U student mental health and wellbeing survey (2022-2024 data; N = 2302). The 3 item NORC DSM-IV Screen (NODS-CLiP) was used to identify positive screen for gambling problems. Variables of interest were anxiety, depression, eating symptoms, self-reported ADHD, proble

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effects of multi-family therapy (MFT-AN); delivered as 10 treatment days over one year; on weight, eating disorder behaviours and emotional problems in adolescents with anorexia nervosa. The added benefit of a 1-year duration compared to 6 months was evaluated. Finally, the outcomes between stand-alone MFT-AN and MFT-AN combined with inpatient treatment were compared.
METHOD: Self-reported data from 230 adolescents (aged 9-18 years) and their families were collected at baseline (T0), 6 months (T6), and 12 months (T12). Percentage median BMI was calculated at

Background/Objectives: Sociocultural factors, including migration and acculturation, may influence the clinical profile and course of eating disorders (EDs). This study examined differences between immigrant and native-born Spanish patients with EDs in (1) clinical presentation and (2) treatment response. Methods: Consecutive outpatients from the Eating Disorders Unit at Bellvitge University Hospital (Barcelona, Spain) were assessed using the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2), Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R), and Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised (TCI-R). BACKGROUND: Excessive negative self-referential processing plays an important role in the development and maintenance of major depressive disorder (MDD). Current measures of self-reflection are limited to self-report questionnaires and invoking imagined states, which may not be suitable for all populations.
AIMS: The current study aimed to pilot a new measure of self-reflection, the Fake IQ Test (FIQT).
METHOD: Participants with MDD and unaffected controls completed a behavioural (experiment 1, n = 50) and functional magnetic resonance imaging version (experiment 2, n = 35) of the FIQT.

Anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders are common childhood psychiatric disorders. Behavioral inhibition (BI) is a widely studied risk factor for anxiety. Less is known about overcontrol, a related behavioral phenotype characterized by concern for errors, perfectionism, and inflexibility and also associated with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Both BI and overcontrol show associations with aberrant cognitive control and neural error responding (via the error-related negativity; ERN) yet it is unknown whether each imparts differential risk. Understanding whether overcontrol demon
