In the course of HIV type 1 infection, up to 90% of patients may have skin disease. We studied a group of 26 HIV-infected patients (15 women, 11 men) with symptoms of skin disease or diffuse itching; they were patch tested for common contactants to determine whether allergic contact dermatitis was the cause of their symptoms. We found that approximately one third of HIV-1-positive patients with cutaneous symptoms not related to allergic contact dermatitis had positive patch tests for environmental contactants; in most of them this sensitization was directly related to skin symptoms.

Chromium(VI) compounds and cigarette smoke are known human carcinogens. We found that K2Cr2O7 and cigarette smoke solution synergistically induced DNA single-strand breaks (0.23+/-0.04 breaks per DNA molecule) in pUC118 plasmid DNA. K2Cr2O7 alone or cigarette smoke solution alone induced much less strand breaks (0.03+/-0.01 or 0.07+/-0.02 breaks per DNA molecule, respectively). The synergistic effect was prevented by catalase and by hydroxyl radical scavengers such as deferoxamine, dimethylsulfoxide, d-mannitol, and Tris, but not by superoxide dismutase. The effect of K2Cr2O7 and (CH3COO)2Pb on the mutagenic activity of gamma rays was studied by a micronucleus test in mouse bone marrow polychromatocytes. Acute and chronic combined actions of the two factors were investigated. Chromium ions (VI) enhanced mutagenic effects of gamma rays in both acute and chronic experiments. In the acute experiments lead ions (II) below 15 mg/kg body weight decreased the number of gamma-ray-induced micronuclei, while higher doses increased it. Chronic combined action of lead ions (III) and gamma rays inhibited mutagenic activity of radiation.

BACKGROUND: Proper collection and storage of fecal samples is necessary to guarantee the subsequent reliability of DNA-based soil-transmitted helminth diagnostic procedures. Previous research has examined various methods to preserve fecal samples for subsequent microscopic analysis or for subsequent determination of overall DNA yields obtained following DNA extraction. However, only limited research has focused on the preservation of soil-transmitted helminth DNA in stool samples stored at ambient temperature or maintained in a cold chain for extended periods of time.
