Processing syntactic functions of words in normal and dyslexic readers.

Readers with dyslexia were compared with normal readers for the ability to identify the grammatical function of words in the course of sentence processing by means of electrophysiological measures along with behavior measures. Participants were 18 dyslexic and 18 normally reading, native Hebrew-speaking male university students, aged 18 to 27 years. Obtained results confirmed the hypothesis (Leikin & Breznitz, 1999) that Hebrew readers used lexical-morphological properties of words to identify their grammatical roles. However, the morphologically based strategy acquired full expression only in

Reading, syntactic, orthographic, and working memory skills of bilingual Arabic-English speaking Canadian children.

This study assessed the reading, language, and memory skills of 56 bilingual Arab-Canadian children age's 9-14. English was their main instructional language, and Arabic was the language spoken at home. All children attended a Heritage Language Program in Toronto where they were taught to read and write Arabic. The children were administered word and pseudo-word reading, language, and working memory tests in English and Arabic. The majority of the children showed at least adequate proficiency in both languages. There was a significant relationship between the acquisition of word and pseudo-wor

Averbia as a selective naming disorder: a single case report.

After a moderate head injury a 33-year-old woman presented a selective defect in finding verbs and name actions. Objects, colors, body parts, and qualities were named in a normal way. No other associated aphasic defects were observed. It was proposed that the selection and use of verbs in their correct forms implies two different aspects, which eventually can become dissociated: (1) the ability to retrieve the lexical item (the action name); and (2) the ability to use the correct affixation, that is, to select the morphological form according to the current context. Only the second would be as

Phonological transformations in conduction aphasia.

Different explanations and subtypes of conduction aphasia are analyzed. Characteristics of literal paraphasias in parietal-insular conduction aphasia are discussed, emphasizing that paraphasias in conduction aphasia are articulatory-based (articulatory literal paraphasias) and due mainly to phoneme substitutions and phoneme deletions; they result basically in switches in phoneme manner and place of articulation. Similarities between errors in ideomotor apraxia and conduction aphasia language deficits are presented. It is proposed that language deviations (in oral as in written language) in con

Body image and comprehension of body part names.

The relation between awareness of body topology and auditory comprehension of body part names was studied in 22 aphasic subjects. Two nonverbal tasks--human figure drawing and placement of individual body parts in relation to a drawn face--were compared with two auditory tests of body part comprehension. The two nonverbal and the two verbal tasks were closely correlated with each other, but there was no relation involving either of the verbal tests with either of the nonverbal tests. Selection errors in the auditory comprehension tasks were predominantly semantically based and equally distribu

Semantic disorders of auditory language comprehension in right brain-damaged patients.

A test of auditory language comprehension was given to 110 right brain-damaged patients and to 94 normal controls in order to check if patients with lesions of the right (nondominant) hemisphere make a significantly higher number of semantic errors than normals. Confirmation of the hypothesis was obtained, but the relationship between semantic errors and lesion of the right hemisphere did not seem a simple and direct one. In fact, most of the lexical-semantic errors were due to associated variables (such as unilateral spatial agnosia and general mental deterioration) and not to the lesion of t

Pause time and phonation time in stuttering and cluttering.

This study examined the potential usefulness of automated analysis of on-off speech patterns in the differentiation of stuttering from cluttering. Two groups of fifteen persons who had been previously classified as stutterers and clutterers served as subjects for this investigation. The data indicate that stutterers tend to have greater mean pause times and lower mean phonation times than clutterers. This result corresponds to the clinically observable characteristics of these groups. It is concluded that automated analysis of on-off speech patterns provides some basis for the differential dia

Early Screening for Developmental Language Disorder: Predictive Validity of German Parent Reports.

BACKGROUND: Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition associated with long-term cognitive, academic, and psychosocial consequences. Early identification is critical for timely intervention, yet predictive frameworks within German-speaking contexts remain limited. Parent-report questionnaires such as the FRAKIS-K and SBE-2-KT are widely used in the German paediatric U7 check-up for two-year-olds, but their predictive validity for DLD has not been systematically evaluated. AIMS: This study assessed the predictive validity of the FRAKIS-K and SBE-2-KT admi

Harnessing Resilience to Mitigate the Effect of Test Anxiety on English Achievement: A Case of the Dual-Mode Hypothesis.

Test anxiety has been found to impede English achievement. Much attention has been paid to motivational and cognitive factors (e.g., self-concept, strategic competence) in reducing test anxiety and its effects, leaving under-explored psychological variables such as resilience. Drawing on the Dual-Mode Hypothesis (DMH), we hypothesize that resilience can impact the effect of test anxiety on English achievement through two modes: reducing the level of test anxiety and subsequently its effectiveness in impairing English achievement (the effectiveness mode) and weakening the negative relationship

Assessing Definitional Competence: Construction, Validation, and Applications of the Co.De. Scale.

Definitional competence involves the ability to understand and produce definitions of different kinds of words. The Co.De. Scale was developed to systematically assess this skill across age groups, emphasizing both linguistic form and semantic content. This study aimed to provide normative data for the Italian population and validate the Co.De. Scale in terms of its validity, reliability, and responsiveness. A sample of 2262 participants aged 3-62 years from various regions in Italy was assessed using the Co.De. Scale, and age-stratified percentile norms were derived. Dimensionality and constr

Psychometric Validation and Structural Associations of the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) in an Arabic-Speaking Sample.

This study examined the psychometric properties and structural validity of a foreign language Classroom anxiety scale in an Arabic-speaking sample (N = 327; Mage = 25.87 years, SD = 7.15) drawn from universities in Libya and Saudi Arabia. Foreign language anxiety was assessed using the Arabic Foreign Language Anxiety Questionnaire (AFLAQ), alongside measures of psychological distress (DASS-8) and resilience (BRS). Confirmatory factor analysis supported a three-factor structure comprising Communication Apprehension, Fear of Negative Evaluation, and Test Anxiety, with acceptable model fit. Measu

Reciprocal Predictive Relationships Between Compounding Awareness and the Comprehension of Different Semantically Decomposable Idioms Among Chinese Children.

This study examined the developmental relationship between compounding awareness and three types of idiom comprehension (normally decomposable idioms, abnormally decomposable idioms, and nondecomposable idioms) from grades 3 to 5. After controlling for non-verbal IQ, rapid automatized naming, phonological awareness, and autoregressive effects, it was found that: (1) children's compounding awareness made a significant direct contribution to abnormally decomposable and nondecomposable idioms from grades 3 to 4, and made a significant effect on normally decomposable, abnormally decomposable and n

The Effect of Orthographic Neighbourhood and Semantics on Lexical Processing in a Transparent Orthographic Language: A Pupilometry Study.

A word's neighborhood comprises orthographically similar words, yet neighborhood effects in transparent orthographies remain theoretically underspecified. We investigated how lexical status and orthographic distance modulate cognitive effort using pupil dilation during silent reading. Pupillary responses from thirty-four adults were analyzed using a combination of Linear Mixed-Effects models and Generalized Additive Mixed Models across real words (RWs), low-distance pseudowords (PWs), and high-distance nonwords (NWs). Results revealed a temporal hierarchy and a double dissociation between lexi

Grasp Motor Representations Facilitate Conceptual Preparation in Speech Production.

Understanding the cognitive mechanisms of spoken language production is essential for explaining human communication. Grounded in embodied cognition theory, this study investigates how object-directed sensorimotor features shape the conceptual preparation stage underlying concept selection. In Experiment 1, participants selected concepts from two dimensions: graspability (graspable vs. non-graspable) and semantic category (artificial vs. natural). This was done under three levels of response competition. Results showed a robust processing advantage for graspable objects over non-graspable ones

Diglossia and Orthographic Complexity as Multiplicative but not Additive Challenges in Arabic: A Critical Review.

The present review explores how the unique linguistic and orthographic characteristics of Arabic interact to shape the development of literacy in Arabic. The review is based on a systematic synthesis of empirical studies published between 2000 and 2025, including behavioral, developmental, and neurocognitive research on reading, spelling, and comprehension among native Arabic speaking learners, conducted in line with PRISMA guidelines. It focuses on the combined influence of diglossia and the visual and structural complexity of the Arabic script. Drawing on empirical findings from behavioral,

Cognitive and Neural Preservation in Older Language Learners: The CNPOLL Framework.

The plasticity of bilingual language systems across the lifespan remains a central issue in theories of language representation and control, yet late-life language learning is rarely integrated into these accounts. This review synthesizes behavioral and neurocognitive evidence on older adults acquiring an additional language, with the aim of clarifying how aging shapes bilingual language learning mechanisms. We first report a quantitative synthesis of behavioral studies examining the effects of late language learning on control-related domains implicated in bilingual language processing, inclu

Mapping Time Across Spatial Axes: Mental Timeline Development in 3- to 5-Year-Old Mandarin-Speaking Children.

The present study investigated how Mandarin-speaking 3- to 5-year-olds map temporal sequences onto three spatial axes: sagittal, vertical, and horizontal. Two experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, children arranged pictorial event sequences along each axis. In Experiment 2, they chose between ordered and unordered temporal sequences in a simpler choice task. Across the preschool years, children showed increasing use of spatial structure to represent time, but the pattern varied across axes. In Experiment 1, responding in the conventionally coded direction appeared earlier on the vertica

Emotional Dialogue Predicts the Success of Prestige Television Episodes.

Whether a narrative succeeds in satisfying its audience is of paramount importance, but predicting this success is difficult. Although previous research has found that the textual characteristics of novels can predict how they are received, what about multimodal narratives like film and television? In a television show, the only text available is the dialogue, with so much of the story conveyed non-verbally (e.g., facial expressions and actions, cinematography, editing, music). Although dialogue is just one aspect of a television episode, might the emotional nature of the dialogue still be abl
