Spontaneous ventriculostomy in a patient with obstructive hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous ventriculostomy related to progressive obstructive hydrocephalus is rare. Radiologic demonstration of such a phenomenon can be delineated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cine MRI. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old woman with a known tectal glioma and symptoms of chronic hydrocephalus developed progressively worsening headaches. During follow-up, she noted spontaneous relief of her headaches. Follow-up cine MRI demonstrated a spontaneous ventriculostomy via the floor of the third ventricle. INTERPRETATION: Clinicians should be aware of spontaneous ventriculost

Responses of neurons in the middle temporal visual area after long-standing lesions of the primary visual cortex in adult new world monkeys.

The retinotopic organization of the middle temporal visual area (MT) was determined in six adult owl monkeys and one adult marmoset 69 d to 10 months after lesions of the dorsolateral primary visual cortex (V1). The lesions removed were limited to extensive parts of the representation of the lower visual quadrant in V1. Microelectrodes were used to record from neurons at numerous sites in MT to determine whether parts of MT normally devoted to the lower visual quadrant (1) were unresponsive to visual stimuli, (2) acquired responsiveness to inputs from intact portions of V1, or (3) became respo

Cortical and subcortical projections of the middle temporal area (MT) and adjacent cortex in galagos.

Projections of the middle temporal visual area, MT, and of visual cortex adjoining MT were investigated with autoradiographic methods in the prosimian primate, Galago senegalensis. Ipsilateral cortical targets of MT included area 17, area 18, cortex caudal to MT, cortex ventral to MT, and parietal-occipital cortex dorsal to MT. This pattern of projections suggests that extrastriate cortex contains a number of visual subdivisions in addition to MT. Contralateral projections were to MT and parietal-occipital cortex. Projections from MT to areas 17 and 18 connected regions representing similar pa

NMDA receptor blockade in the superior colliculus increases receptive field size without altering velocity and size tuning.

Neonatal brain injury triggers compensatory processes that can be adaptive or detrimental, but little is known about the mechanisms of compensation or how they might affect the response properties of neurons within the injured region. We have studied this issue in a rodent model. Partial ablation of the hamster superior colliculus (SC) at birth results in a compressed but complete visual field map in the remaining SC and a compensatory conservation of receptive field (RF) size and stimulus velocity and size tuning. The circuit underlying stimulus tuning in this system or its preservation after

Calretinin-immunoreactive elements in the retina and optic tectum of the frog, Rana esculenta.

The frog retina contains numerous 28 kDa calbindin positive elements in its every layer. At the same time, parvalbumin has been observed only in a few elements in the visual system of amphibian species, whilst calretinin immunoreactivity could be detected in salamander retina and the optic tectum of tench. However, the presence and distribution of calretinin have been described to date neither in the retina nor in the other parts of the visual system of anurans. Therefore, the aim of this study is to describe the calretinin immunoreactive elements in the retina and the optic tectum of the frog

Comparative localisation of CRYP alpha, a CAM-like tyrosine phosphatase, and NgCAM in the developing chick visual system.

The avian CRYP alpha gene is expressed in the embryonic nervous system and encodes a receptor-like protein tyrosine phosphatase with structural similarity to neural cell adhesion molecules. To gain further insight into the role of the CRYP alpha phosphatase in neural development, this study addresses the protein's cellular distribution in the well characterised embryonic visual system. High levels of CRYP alpha protein localise in retinal axons extending from the eye to the tectum throughout the major growth periods of these nerve processes. In addition, primitive inner plexiform layer process

The use of brain tissue mechanics for time since death estimations.

Time since death estimation is a vital part of forensic pathology. Despite the known tissue degradation after death, the efficacy of using biomechanical tissue properties to estimate time since death remains unexplored. Here, eight brain tissue localizations were sampled from the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, anterior and posterior deep brain, superior colliculi, pons, medulla, and cerebellum of 30 sheep; were then stored at 20 °C; and subsequently subjected to rheometry tests on days zero to four after death. Overall, the measured tissue storage modulus, loss modulus, and complex shear modulus

Afferent and efferent connections of C1 cells with spinal cord or hypothalamic projections in mice.

The axonal projections and synaptic input of the C1 adrenergic neurons of the rostral ventrolateral medulla (VLM) were examined using transgenic dopamine-beta hydroxylase Cre mice and modified rabies virus. Cre-dependent viral vectors expressing TVA (receptor for envelopeA) and rabies glycoprotein were injected into the left VLM. EnvelopeA-pseudotyped rabies-EGFP glycoprotein-deficient virus (rabies-EGFP) was injected 4-6 weeks later in either thoracic spinal cord (SC) or hypothalamus. TVA immunoreactivity was detected almost exclusively (95 %) in VLM C1 neurons. In mice with SC injections of

Neuroprotective effect on retinal ganglion cells by transpupillary laser irradiation of the optic nerve head.

This study demonstrates that subthreshold transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) laser irradiation on optic nerve head protects retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in an optic nerve crush (ONC) model. TTT was performed in right eyes with an 810-nm diode laser aimed at the center of the optic nerve head, using the following protocol: power 60mW, duration 60s, spot size 500mum. Fluoro-Gold was injected into bilateral superior colliculi 5 days before sacrifice and fluorescent gold labeled RGCs were counted under fluorescence microscopy. In the ONC group, a progressive loss of RGCs was observed; however, in

Neuroprotective effect of nipradilol [3,4-dihydro-8-(2-hydroxy-3-isopropylamino)-propoxy-3-nitroxy-2H-1-benzopyran] in a rat model of optic nerve degeneration.

PURPOSE: Currently, nipradilol, an alpha-1 beta-blocker with a nitric oxide donative action, is used as an ocular hypotensive agent for glaucoma patients in Japan. The aim of the present study was to investigate the neuroprotective effect of nipradilol on optic nerve injury in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a calibrated cross-action forceps, a crush lesion was inflicted unilaterally on the optic nerve 2 mm behind the globe of adult Wistar albino rats and followed by topical instillation of either 0.25% nipradilol or the vehicle in both eyes twice daily until killing. A sham operation was

Cyan fluorescent protein (CFP) expressing cells in the retina of Thy1-CFP transgenic mice before and after optic nerve injury.

We investigated the specificity of cyan fluorescent protein (CFP) expression in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) of the transgenic Thy1-CFP (B6.Cg-Tg(Thy1-CFP)23Jrs/J) mouse line, and the characteristics of these cells after optic nerve injury. RGCs of adult Thy1-CFP mice were retrogradely labeled with fluorochrome (2% fluorogold [FG]) from the superior colliculi (SC). Animals were sacrificed 7 days after RGC labeling. Retinas were fixed and whole-mounted. CFP and FG-positive cells were visualized and imaged separately. Cells positive for CFP, FG, or co-labeled were counted. In another group of a

Increased Resting-State Positron Emission Tomography Activity After Cochlear Implantation in Adult Deafened Cats.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implants are widely used for hearing rehabilitation in patients with profound sensorineural hearing loss. However, Cochlear implants have variable. RESULTS: and central neural plasticity is considered to be a reason for this variability. We hypothesized that resting-state cortical networks play a role in conditions of profound hearing loss and are affected by cochlear implants. To investigate the resting-state neuronal networks after cochlear implantation, we acquired 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET) images in experimental animals. METHODS:

Origin and organization of brainstem catecholamine innervation in the rat.

The catecholamine (CA) innervation of the rat brainstem was studied by biochemical analysis of discrete nuclei or areas and by glyoxylic acid-formaldehyde freeze dry fluorescence histochemistry. CA assays demonstrate that the highest norepinephrine (NE) content in brainstem is present in the trigeminal motor nucleus, nucleus tractus solitarius, dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus and nucleus raphe dorsalis. Bilateral locus coeruleus (LC) lesions do not significantly alter NE content in these nuclei but do decrease NE content in the superior and inferior colliculi, medial geniculate body, interpe

Brain activation following flexible stimulation paradigms of transcorneal electrical stimulation (TES) in a murine model of glaucoma.

Transcorneal electrical stimulation (TES) has been shown as a promising treatment for optic neuropathy in DBA/2J glaucoma model mice, however the current knowledge about the most effective application parameters, such as intensity and duration, is limited. In this study, after electrophysiological evaluation and intraocular pressure measurements, a single TES treatment in both eyes was performed and expression of c-Fos in the superior colliculus measured as a response. Groups were formed with 4, 8-month-old mice, 2 male and 2 female, and treated with 1, 10, or 100 μA for 10 or 30 min; a group

Visual Dysfunction of the Superior Colliculus in De Novo Parkinsonian Patients.

OBJECTIVE: The dual hit hypothesis about the pathogenesis of Parkinson disease (PD) suggests that the brainstem is a convergent area for the propagation of pathological α-synuclein from the periphery to the brain. Although brainstem structures are likely to be affected early in the course of the disease, detailed information regarding specific brainstem regions is lacking. The aim of our study was to investigate the function of the superior colliculus, a sensorimotor brainstem structure, in de novo PD patients compared to controls using brain functional magnetic imaging and visual stimulation

Visual receptive field properties of neurons in the superficial superior colliculus of the mouse.

The mouse is a promising model in the study of visual system function and development because of available genetic tools. However, a quantitative analysis of visual receptive field properties had not been performed in the mouse superior colliculus (SC) despite its importance in mouse vision and its usefulness in developmental studies. We have made single-unit extracellular recordings from superficial layers of the SC in urethane-anesthetized C57BL/6 mice. We first map receptive fields with flashing spot stimuli and show that most SC neurons have spatially overlapped ON and OFF subfields. With

Somatostatin receptor subtype 1 and subtype 2 mRNA expression is regulated by nutritional state in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Somatostatin receptors (sst) mediate the numerous physiological actions (e.g., aspects of growth, development, and metabolism) of the somatostatin family of peptides. In this study, we used rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to establish the pattern of sst subtype 1A, 1B, and 2 mRNA expression in selected tissues (optic tectum of brain, endocrine pancreas, and liver) and to evaluate nutritional regulation of sst expression. Quantitative real-time reverse transcription-PCR, sensitive to less than 100 copies, revealed that sst1s and sst2 was differentially expressed, both in terms of distributi

Topological specificity in reinnervation of the superior colliculus by regenerated retinal ganglion cell axons in adult hamsters.

In normal rodents there is a precise topology of the retinocollicular projection, the nasotemporal and ventrodorsal axes of the retina being respectively projected onto the caudorostral and mediolateral axes of the contralateral superior colliculus (SC). We evaluated the distribution of regenerated retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axon terminals in the SC of adult hamsters in which an unbranched peripheral nerve graft was directed from the retina to the contralateral SC. Responses to visual stimulation of individual RGCs were recorded from terminal arbors of their regenerated axons in the reinnerva

Reptilian somatosensory midbrain: identification based on input from the spinal cord and dorsal column nucleus.

A midbrain somatosensory area was identified in reptiles Caiman crocodilus, by orthograde degeneration techniques after midcervical spinal cord transections or after dorsal column lesions. Terminations of these somesthetic inputs were located in a caudal lateral part of the central nucleus of the torus semicircularis and contiguous dorsal mesencephalon. Dorsal column projections were contralateral while spinal connections were mainly ipsilateral. In order to confirm the results of the anterograde degeneration experiments independently, injections of horseradish peroxidase were placed in this m
