Review of sensory modalities of sirenians and the other extant Paenungulata clade.

Extant members of Paenungulata (sirenians, proboscideans, and hyracoideans) form a monophyletic clade which originated in Africa. While paenungulates are all herbivorous, they differ greatly in size, life history, and habitat. Therefore, we would expect both phylogenetically related similarities and ecologically driven differences in their use and specializations of sensory systems, especially in adaptations in sirenians related to their fully aquatic habitat. Here we review what is known about the sensory modalities of this clade in an attempt to better elucidate their sensory adaptations. Ma

Experimental infection of serotine bats (Eptesicus serotinus) with European bat lyssavirus type 1a.

The serotine bat (Eptesicus serotinus) accounts for the vast majority of bat rabies cases in Europe and is considered the main reservoir for European bat lyssavirus type 1 (EBLV-1, genotype 5). However, so far the disease has not been investigated in its native host under experimental conditions. To assess viral virulence, dissemination and probable means of transmission, captive bats were infected experimentally with an EBLV-1a virus isolated from a naturally infected conspecific from Germany. Twenty-nine wild caught bats were divided into five groups and inoculated by intracranial (i.c.), in

Distributions of the calcitonin gene-related peptide and substance P in the monkey larynx.

The distribution of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)- and substance P (SP)-like immunoreactivity in the monkey larynx was studied with light microscopy using the immunofluorescence method. We divided the larynx into the following six regions: epiglottis, arytenoid region, false cords, ventricle, vocal cords and subglottis. The distribution of immunoreactivity in the epithelium and subepithelial layer was determined. CGRP- and SP-like immunoreactive nerve fibers were observed in all regions of the laryngeal epithelium except in the vocal cords. In the epithelium of the epiglottis and aryt

The distribution of transient receptor potential melastatin-8 in the rat soft palate, epiglottis, and pharynx.

Immunohistochemistry for transient receptor potential melastatin-8 (TRPM8), the cold and menthol receptor, was performed on the rat soft palate, epiglottis and pharynx. TRPM8-immunoreactive (IR) nerve fibers were located beneath the mucous epithelium, and occasionally penetrated the epithelium. These nerve fibers were abundant in the posterior portion of the soft palate and at the border region of naso-oral and laryngeal parts of the pharynx. The epiglottis was free from such nerve fibers. The double immunofluorescence method demonstrated that TRPM8-IR nerve fibers in the pharynx and soft pala

Ribosomal Profiling of the Geniculate Ganglion Identifies the Receptor ALK as Critical for the Development and Maintenance of Oral Sensory Neurons.

The geniculate ganglion (GG) consists of two populations of neurons, sensory neurons that innervate the oral cavity and express the transcription factor Phox2b and somatosensory neurons that innervate the pinna and express Brn3a To identify signaling pathways necessary for oral sensory neuron development and physiology, the translatome of Phox2b+ GG neurons was selectively profiled using the RiboTag method. From this analysis, anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) was identified as one of the most highly enriched tyrosine kinase receptors. In situ hybridization revealed that Alk was expressed in ne

Spheroids and organoids: Their implications for oral and craniofacial tissue/organ regeneration.

Spheroids are spherical aggregates of cells. Normally, most of adherent cells cannot survive in suspension; however, if they adhere to each other and grow to a certain size, they can survive without attaching to the dish surface. Studies have shown that spheroid formation induces dedifferentiation and improves plasticity, proliferative capability, and differentiation capability. In particular, spontaneous spheroids represent a selective and efficient cultivation technique for somatic stem cells. Organoids are considered mini-organs composed of multiple types of cells with extracellular matrice

Role of CD36 in Palmitic Acid Lipotoxicity in Neuro-2a Neuroblastoma Cells.

Elevated level of palmitic acid (PA), a long-chain saturated fatty acid (SFA), is lipotoxic to many different types of cells including Neuro-2a (N2a) neuroblastoma cells. CD36 is a multifunctional membrane glycoprotein that acts as a fatty acid translocase (FAT) facilitating the transport of long-chain free fatty acids (FFAs) into cells, serves a fatty acid (FA) sensing function in areas including taste buds and the proximal gut, and acts as a scavenger receptor that binds to many ligands, including FAs, collagen, oxidized low-density lipoproteins, and anionic phospholipids. However, the invol

Up-regulation of Metabotropic glutamate receptor 3 (mGluR3) in rat fibrosis and cirrhosis model of persistent hypoxic condition.

Glutamate is the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, and evidence for peripheral glutamatergic fibers in mammals is still lacking. However, glutamate receptors have been identified in peripheral organs, including taste buds, myenteric plexus, and pancreatic islet cell. Protection against anoxic damage could also be explained by mechanisms mediated by postsynaptic mGluR2 or mGluR3, such as the inhibition of membrane excitability resulting from a reduction of cAMP formation by a G-protein-dependent modulation of ion channels. In addition, activation of mGluR3 present

Anatomical and neurohistological observations on the tongue of 60 mm embryo of opossum, Didetphis marsupialis.

The anatomy, histology and innervation of the tongue of 60 mm embryo of opossum, Didelphis marsupialis have been described. The tongue measures 13 mm in length and 4.5 mm in breadth. The tip of the tongue is somewhat pointed and bordered by soft fringe of simple filiform papillae which are probably tactile in function. The fungiform papillae are small rounded bead-like structures scattered over the dorsum. The circumvallate papillae are three in number and arranged in an inverted V-shape. Taste buds are developed over the dorsum of fungiform papillae. The foliate papillae are concealed. The fi

Anatomy and histology of the digestive system of the paddlefish (Polyodon spathula).

The paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) is one of the most primitive and unique freshwater fishes of North America. It is adapted as a plankton filter-feeder. The wide mouth and greatly expansible pharyngeal cavity allows it to process a large quantity of water. Numerous setiform gillrakers, which operate against the flattened surfaces of the gill arches and opercula, are capable of filtering out small food particles. The abundance of taste buds and mucus secreting cells in the buccal cavity and pharynx probably aids in selecting and entangling the food. The first segment of the stomach is provided

Distribution of gustatory sensitivities in rat taste cells: whole-cell responses to apical chemical stimulation.

Several taste transduction mechanisms have been demonstrated in mammals, but little is known about their distribution within and across receptor cells. We recorded whole-cell responses of 120 taste cells of the rat fungiform papillae and soft palate maintained within the intact epithelium in a modified Ussing chamber, which allowed us to flow tastants across the apical membrane while monitoring the activity of the cell with a patch pipette. Taste stimuli were: 0.1 m sucrose, KCl, and NH(4)Cl, 0.032 m NaCl, and 3.2 mm HCl and quinine hydrochloride (QHCl). When cells were held at their resting p

Ultramorphological changes in gill rakers of Astyanax altiparanae (Characidae) kept in contaminated environments.

Most water bodies in Brazil, and in the world, are contaminated by some types of pollutants, ranging from sewage to metal/chemicals, carcinogenic products, and biodegradable detergents. Despite the extensive knowledge on their effects on fish biology and especially on gill morphology, research that concerns their impacts on gill rakers and implications in parameters such as food consumption cannot be found in the literature. Gill rakers are vital because, together with gills, they are responsible for the defense and protection of the organism and for selecting appropriate food for survival. Wh
