In late 2019 the coronavirus disease - 2019 (COVID - 19) pandemic caused by SARS Coronavirus 2 (SARS - CoV - 2) started in Wuhan, China. Life has changed radically since then. Data emerging from the first hit countries show a tendency for a complicated course and higher mortality in some subgroups of infected patients. Cancer patients are immunosuppressed from their disease and the therapy they receive. Hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients are a subgroup of patients that are severely immunocompromised and may be at an even higher risk of a complicated course during this infection. Re

BackgroundBone marrow transplantation (BMT) is a breakthrough procedure for patients with hematological and oncological conditions, particularly when all other treatments fail. Its indications vary between patients and settings, and its outcomes depend on the donor type, transplantation facility, and center expertise. In countries where transplantation facilities are lacking, sending patients abroad for transplantation might be a safe and effective alternative to leaving the patient to face eventual disease morbidity or even mortality if the procedure is not performed locally. However, studies

Oral mucositis (OM) is a common and significant complication of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, particularly in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). This retrospective observational study assessed the effectiveness of oral cryotherapy in reducing the incidence and severity of OM in 258 HSCT recipients treated at a single transplant center in Poland between 2018 and 2024. Patients were divided into two groups: 199 received cryotherapy as part of their conditioning regimen, while 59 did not. Cryotherapy was administered using ice chips from 10 min before chemotherap

BACKGROUND: The Report on Carcinogens (RoC) is a congressionally mandated, science-based public health document that the National Toxicology Program (NTP) prepares for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary. The latest cumulative report, the 15th RoC, includes 256 listings of substances - chemical, physical, and biological agents; mixtures; and exposure circumstances - that are known or reasonably anticipated to cause cancer in humans. For each listed substance, a profile, i.e., a short synopsis of key studies on cancer, exposure data, and regulations to limit exposure, is

Patients undergoing myeloablative chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) experience profound neutropenia and vulnerability to infection. Previous research has indicated that patients with infections have depleted vitamin C status. In this study, we recruited 38 patients with hematopoietic cancer who were undergoing conditioning chemotherapy and HSCT. Blood samples were collected prior to transplantation, at one week, two weeks and four weeks following transplantation. Vitamin C status and biomarkers of inflammation (C-reactive protein) and oxidative stress (protein car

Six decades have passed since the foundational recognition of the primary properties of the stem cells. Research on stem cells has since remained at the forefront of efforts to combat a spectrum of diseases, most notably cancer. Despite remarkable progress in medical science, a definitive cure for cancer has remained elusive, spurring the pursuit of diverse therapeutic strategies, among which stem cell therapy is a particularly promising avenue. Moreover, the utilization of cancer stem cells as a therapeutic source holds immense potential for addressing intractable diseases. The strategy of ta

Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia (WM) or lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma is a B-cell malignancy characterized by lymphoplasmacytic cells in the bone marrow that secrete high amounts of immunoglobulin (Ig) M. The large pentameric structure of IgM leads to a variety of unique complications in WM, such as hyperviscosity syndrome, cryoglobulinemia and sensory neuropathy. Furthermore, malignant cells can infiltrate the central nervous system and lead to a variety of neurological complications, also known as Bing Neel Syndrome. Because of the unique pathophysiology of WM and these complications, their dia

High dose chemotherapy (HDT) followed by autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (ASCT) is standard of care including a curative treatment option for several cancers. While much is known about the management of patients with allogenic SCT at the intensive care unit (ICU), data regarding incidence, clinical impact, and outcome of critical illness following ASCT are less reported. This study included 256 patients with different cancer entities. Median age was 56 years (interquartile ranges (IQR): 45-64), and 67% were male. One-year survival was 89%; 15 patients (6%) required treatm

BACKGROUND: Outpatient autologous stem cell transplantations (ASCTs) in multiple myeloma and lymphoma patients have been shown to reduce the overall costs and improve the quality of life relative to inpatient ASCTs. This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed with the aim of comprehensively comparing the risk of febrile neutropenia developing in ASCT outpatients and inpatients who have multiple myeloma or lymphoma.
METHODS: To be eligible for the meta-analysis, studies needed to be either randomized, controlled studies or cohort studies. They also need to have two groups of patient

Stem cell therapy (SCT) is a promising solution for addressing health challenges in Africa, particularly non-communicable diseases (NCDs). With their regenerative potential, stem cells have the inherent capacity to differentiate into numerous cell types for tissue repair. Despite infrastructural, ethical, and legal challenges, SCT holds immense promise for managing chronic illnesses and deep-seated tissue injuries. The rising prevalence of NCDs in Africa highlights the need for innovative strategies and treatment options. SCT offers hope in combating conditions like burns, osteoarthritis, diab

After more than 60 years of research in allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), this therapy has advanced from one that was declared dead in the 1960s to a standard treatment of otherwise fatal malignant and non-malignant blood diseases. To date, close to 1.5 million hematopoietic cell transplants have been performed in more than 1,500 transplantation centers worldwide. This review will highlight the enormous efforts by numerous investigators throughout the world who have brought the experimental field of HCT to clinical reality, examine ongoing challenges, and provide insights fo

Sanjeev Kumar SharmaHematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is the preferred treatment for high-risk and relapsed/refractory hematological malignancies. Moreover, with the improved supportive care and increasing acceptance of haploidentical transplantations as an alternative treatment modality, more patients are opting for HSCT as a definite treatment for hematological malignancies. We report here the real-world data and outcome of HSCT done for hematological malignancies at our transplant center. Five hundred and sixteen patients underwent HSCT from August 2010 to November 2019. The mo

BackgroundHigh dose melphalan (HDMEL) is considered the standard conditioning regimen for autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) in multiple myeloma (MM) patients. Recent studies showed superiority of busulfan plus melphalan (BUMEL) compared to HDMEL as a conditioning regimen. We compared the efficacy of HDMEL and BUMEL in newly diagnosed Asian MM patients, who are often underrepresented.MethodsThis is a single-center, retrospective study including MM patients who underwent ASCT after bortezomib-thalidomide-dexamethasone (VTD) triplet induction chemotherapy between January 2015 and August

Total body irradiation (TBI) has been a pivotal component of the conditioning regimen for allogeneic myeloablative haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in very-high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) for decades, especially in children and young adults. The myeloablative conditioning regimen has two aims: (1) to eradicate leukaemic cells, and (2) to prevent rejection of the graft through suppression of the recipient's immune system. Radiotherapy has the advantage of achieving an adequate dose effect in sanctuary sites and in areas with poor blood supply. However, radiotherapy

Epidemiologic data about coronaviruses (CoVs) and human bocavirus (HBoV) in the setting of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) are scarce. We conducted a prospective longitudinal study on respiratory viral infections (RVIs) in allo-HSCT recipients with respiratory symptoms from December 2013 until June 2016. Respiratory virus in upper and/or lower respiratory tract (URT and LRT) specimens were tested using Luminex xTAG RVP Fast v1 assay. Seventy-nine consecutive allo-HSCT recipients developed a total of 192 virologically documented RVI episodes over 30 months. The me

BackgroundImmune-mediated cytopenias (AIC) are challenging complications following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). While broad-acting immunosuppressive agents like corticosteroids are often standard of care, several novel therapies which target specific immunological pathways have recently been developed and provide hope for patients with steroid-refractory courses and may limit long-term toxicity. The successful off-label use of the plasma cell depleting anti-CD38 antibody daratumumab was published in several case reports, suggesting efficacy, i.e., in patients with

Calcineurin inhibitor (CNI)-sparing T-cell depleted (TCD) hematopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCTs) are presumed to be less nephrotoxic than conventional HSCTs. We evaluated incidence and risk factors for kidney failure and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in 231 TCD and 212 conventional HSCT recipients. Kidney failure required a median glomerular filtration rate (GFR) 2 for ⩾100 days anytime after 180-days post-HSCT. Two-year cumulative incidence (CI) of kidney failure was 42% in the conventional versus 31% in the TCD group (P=0.005). TCD, age, acute kidney injury and number of toxic CNI levels

EBMT is a non-profit organization with a clear mission: "to save the lives of patients with blood cancers and other life-threatening diseases by advancing the fields of blood and marrow transplantation and cell therapy worldwide through science, education and advocacy". In 1974, EBMT was established by European physicians in St. Moritz to share bone marrow transplantation (BMT) experiences and foster collaboration. Founding members included Jon Van Rood, Bruno Speck, and Eliane Gluckman. By 1989, the group expanded significantly, emphasizing mutual trust and collaboration. EBMT played a crucia
