[The extraction of the lower third molars: germectomy or late avulsion?].

INTRODUCTION: Lower third molars show the highest incidence of impaction and have been held responsible for pathologies such as pericoronitis, periodontitis, second molars tooth-crown resorption, pain, cysts or odontogenic tumors, primary or secondary crowding of the dentition. Early removal of these teeth to prevent the overmentioned problems is widely acknowledged, as many studies demonstrated a direct correlation between age and incidence of complications. These studies mostly refer to adult patients, while studies about germectomies are few. Because recent contributions showed that the ris

γδT Cells Are Essential for Orthodontic Tooth Movement.

Sustained mechanical forces applied to tissue are known to shape local immunity. In the oral mucosa, mechanical stress, either naturally induced by masticatory forces or externally via mechanical loading during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), is translated, in part, by T cells to alveolar bone resorption. Nevertheless, despite being considered critical for OTM, depletion of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells is reported to have no impact on tooth movement, thus questioning the function of αβT cells in OTM-associated bone resorption. To further address the role of T cells in OTM, we first characterized th

Complex palpebral odontogenic choristoma: A reappraisal of the origin of teeth-bearing periocular lesions.

PURPOSE: To describe the findings observed in a congenital ectopic tooth of the lower inner eyelid and explain its origin. DESIGN: Retrospective and interventional clinicopathologic study. METHODS: Histopathologic evaluation of sequentially excised specimens over 4 years and radiographic study of any associated dental abnormalities, compared with critical reevaluation of similar reported cases in the literature. RESULTS: The ectopic eyelid tooth clinically created a dome-shaped mass and microscopically displayed advanced cytodifferentiation but incomplete morphogenesis with clearly identifi

Ultrastructural studies and immunolocalization of enamel proteins in rodent secretory stage ameloblasts processed by various cryofixation methods.

BACKGROUND: Cryofixation rapidly immobilizes cell and tissue components in their native state, thereby resulting in an ultrastructural preservation very close to the living situation. We have applied this approach to examine the morphology of secretory stage ameloblasts and the distribution of enamel proteins in these cells. METHODS: Molar and incisor tooth germs from newborn mice and/or rats were quickly dissected and divided into segments. The segments were then rapidly frozen using slam, plunge or pressure freezing, freeze-substituted and embedded in Epon. In addition, incisors from older

Osteoblast and osteoclast behaviors in the turnover of attachment bones during medaka tooth replacement.

Tooth replacement in polyphyodont is a well-organized system for maintenance of homeostasis of teeth, containing the dynamic structural change in skeletal tissues such as the attachment bone, which is the supporting element of teeth. Histological analyses have revealed the character of tooth replacement, however, the cellular mechanism of how skeletal tissues are modified during tooth replacement is largely unknown. Here, we showed the important role of osteoblasts for controlling osteoclasts to modify the attachment bone during tooth replacement in medaka pharyngeal teeth, coupled with an ost

FGF10 maintains stem cell compartment in developing mouse incisors.

Mouse incisors are regenerative tissues that grow continuously throughout life. The renewal of dental epithelium-producing enamel matrix and/or induction of dentin formation by mesenchymal cells is performed by stem cells that reside in cervical loop of the incisor apex. However, little is known about the mechanisms of stem cell compartment formation. Recently, a mouse incisor was used as a model to show that fibroblast growth factor (FGF) 10 regulates mitogenesis and fate decision of adult stem cells. To further illustrate the role of FGF10 in the formation of the stem cell compartment during

Fate of developing tooth buds located in relation to mandibular fractures in three infancy cases.

The fate of developing tooth buds located in relation to mandibular fractures was investigated in three infancy cases. Three infants, 2 girls and a boy, aged from 1 year and 5-months old to 2 years and 6-months old, were treated for dislocated mandibular fracture in the symphyseal region by manual reduction and fixation with a thermoforming splint and circumferential wiring under general anesthesia. Fracture healing was uneventful in all cases. A few years later, no obvious deformity of the jaw or malocclusion was observed; however, malformation of the crown was found in one of the permanent t

Immobilization of root-compromised maxillary anterior teeth: a case report with 14-year clinical follow-up.

The efficacy of a modified cast-metal resin-bonded splint was evaluated after 14 years in service. The splint was used to immobilize the root-compromised maxillary central and lateral incisors of a teenage male following relapsed orthodontic treatment. The affected teeth were indirectly traumatized, before their eruption, in a bicycle accident that resulted in avulsion of their primary predecessors. The rationale for selecting this treatment modality rather than the alternatives is discussed. The clinical protocol employed during the treatment and subsequent follow-up is described.

Molecular basis of hereditary neuropathies.

Inherited disorders of peripheral nerves represent a common group of neurologic diseases. Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy type 1 (CMT1) is a genetically heterogeneous group of chronic demyelinating polyneuropathies with loci mapping to chromosome 17 (CMT1A), chromosome 1 (CMT1B) and to another unknown autosome (CMT1C). CMT1A is most often associated with a tandem 1.5-megabase (Mb) duplication in chromosome 17p11.2-12, or in rare patients may result from a point mutation in the peripheral myelin protein-22 (PMP22) gene. CMT1B is associated with point mutations in the myelin protein zero (P0 or M

[Structure of teeth in mature ovarian teratoma].

MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors investigated three mature ovarian dermoid cysts that were found to contain atypically developed teeth (one tooth in one cyst; 2 teeth in another cyst, and a set of 8 teeth with jawbone fragments in the third one). Their structure was examined using the epoxy resin plastination technique to obtain plastinated sections. RESULTS: Some of these teratomous teeth have obvious signs of alteration in both dentin and enamel, which may be referred to as fluorosis or macular enamel hypoplasia in one case whereas other sections indicate a caries lesion. CONCLUSION: Thes

The authors show the responsibility of antimitotic chemotherapy on the disturbances in dental development in the young children. They insist on doing an odonto-stomatologic check-up at the beginning of the treatment and to keep a constant watch during the treatment and until the end of dental evolution.

Immunohistochemical demonstration of an enamel sheath protein, sheathlin, in odontogenic tumors.

Enamel proteins can be useful markers for assessment of the functional differentiation of neoplastic epithelium and the nature of extracellular matrices in odontogenic tumors. In the present study, we examined immunohistochemical localization of sheathlin, a recently cloned enamel sheath protein, in various odontogenic tumors to evaluate functional differentiation of tumor cells and the nature of hyalinous or calcified matrices in odontogenic neoplasms. Distinct immunolocalization of sheathlin was observed in the immature enamel of the tooth germ at the late bell stage. Secretory ameloblasts f

Immunofluorescent evidence for the similarity of amelogenins in calf, mouse and pig teeth.

Antiserum was prepared to fetal bovine enamel matrix and was used to localize the amelogenins in developing bovine molars by immunofluorescent microscopy. Amelogenins could be identified to preameloblasts, secretory ameloblasts, stratum intermedium cells, and the newly deposited enamel matrix. Mature enamel matrix did not fluoresce except in a thin line along the DEJ and adjacent to the ameloblasts. Immature enamel matrix of murine and porcine teeth fluoresced when treated with antiserum to bovine enamel matrix. No other portions of tooth buds or other tissues reacted with the specific antiser

[Oral homeostasis imbalance under hypoxia].

Hypoxia disrupts oral homeostasis through multiple interconnected pathways, including interference with tooth germ development, impairment of salivary gland function and salivary buffering capacity, compromise of the oral mucosal barrier, imbalance in jawbone and alveolar bone remodeling, and alterations in the diversity and functionality of the oral microbiome. These disturbances collectively contribute to the onset and progression of oral diseases. Moreover, disruption of oral homeostasis may, in turn, affect systemic homeostasis, increasing the risk of disorders in other organ systems throu

Orthodontic Treatment for a Patient with Root Resorption of All Four Maxillary Incisors due to Bilaterally Impacted Canines.

Maxillary canines require the longest period from the generation of the tooth germ to the completion of eruption, and they have more difficulties in eruption than other teeth. The incisor roots are often resorbed due to malpositioned canines. An 11-year-old girl presented with an extremely rare case of root resorption of four maxillary incisors due to bilaterally impacted maxillary canines, which were located excessively mesially. The case was managed through oral surgery and orthodontic treatment over five years. After extracting the maxillary deciduous canines, the maxillary bilateral canine

Management of multiple and displaced mandibular fractures in a pediatric patient sans mandibular immobilization, sans open reduction and internal fixation.

Maxillofacial fractures in the pediatric population are generally managed by conservative approaches such as soft diet and medication or semi-invasive procedures namely inter-maxillary fixation or circum-mandibular wiring. These approaches are preferred over any invasive treatment to minimize injury to the growing skeleton and tooth germs. Displaced fractures that cause functional problems such as restricted mouth opening, malocclusion or impaired breathing, mandate open reduction and internal fixation. However, surgical management is associated with morbidity related to general anesthesia, ri

Dental treatment considerations for a pediatric patient with incontinentia pigmenti (Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome).

Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is a uncommon gene disorder, heritage with X-linked dominant mode. IP patients have a characteristic dentition varying from marked hypodontia to delayed eruption and conical crowns on both dentitions. A 5½-year-old girl, whose mother and younger sister were also diagnosed with IP, has the whirling-like pigmented skin lesion over her trunk and four extremities. Four primary teeth and multiple permanent tooth germs were found to be congenital missing. Dental considerations of further treatment were discussed with her parents including the preservation of primary molar
