Advanced Technologies for Large Scale Supply of Marine Drugs.

Marine organisms represent a source of unique chemical entities with valuable biomedical potentialities, broad diversity, and complexity. It is essential to ensure a reliable and sustainable supply of marine natural products (MNPs) for their translation into commercial drugs and other valuable products. From a structural point of view and with few exceptions, MNPs of pharmaceutical importance derive from the so-called secondary metabolism of marine organisms. When production strategies rely on marine macroorganisms, harvesting or culturing coupled with extraction procedures frequently remain t

Characterization of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from raw milk sources in Victoria, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Highly pathogenic strains of Staphylococcus aureus can cause disease in both humans and animals. In animal species, including ruminants, S. aureus may cause severe or sub-clinical mastitis. Dairy animals with mastitis frequently shed S. aureus into the milk supply which can lead to food poisoning in humans. The aim of this study was to use genotypic and immunological methods to characterize S. aureus isolates from milk-related samples collected from 7 dairy farms across Victoria. RESULTS: A total of 30 S. aureus isolates were collected from milk and milk filter samples from 3 bovi

First Report of Alternaria alternata Causing Postharvest Decay on Apple Fruit During Cold Storage in Pennsylvania.

Alternaria rot, caused by Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissl., occurs on apple fruit (Malus × domestica Borkh) worldwide and is not controlled with postharvest fungicides currently registered for apple in the United States (1). Initial infections can occur in the orchard prior to harvest, or during cold storage, and appear as small red dots located around lenticels (1). The symptoms appear on fruits within a 2 month period after placement into cold storage (3). In February 2013, 'Nittany' apple fruit with round, dark, dry, spongy lesions were collected from bins at commercial storage facility l

Involvement of Pruritus, Gut Dysbiosis and Histamine-Producing Bacteria in Paraneoplastic Syndromes.

Background/Objectives: Paraneoplastic syndromes (PNS), characterized by a large diversity of symptoms, may sometimes be the first clinical feature of a severe underlying disorder such as cancer. Methods: We report the case of a middle-aged male patient with no significant previous medical history, a nonsmoker or alcohol heavy drinker, complaining about generalized, recently onset itch. Given no reasonable explanation of pruritus after dermatological consultation and the unsatisfactory response to treatment, the patient was referred to gastroenterology with the suspicion of a cholestatic liver

A harmonized individual-level phytoplankton trait dataset from Mediterranean and Black Sea transitional waters.

BACKGROUND: Transitional waters are dynamic coastal ecosystems located at the interface between freshwater and marine environments. They are characterized by pronounced environmental variability resulting from the interaction between geomorphology, freshwater inputs, tidal exchanges, climatic variability, and human activities. These factors generate high habitat heterogeneity and complex ecological dynamics.Phytoplankton communities inhabiting transitional waters are particularly sensitive to both natural gradients and anthropogenic pressures, often exhibiting marked spatial and seasonal patte

Monitoring arthropods under the scope of LIFE-SNAILS project: II - Santa Maria Island data with implementation of the Index of Biotic Integrity.

BACKGROUND: The data presented here constitute an important component of the LIFE SNAILS project (Support and Naturalisation in Areas of Importance for Land Snails) which aims to protect three threatened endemic mollusc species from Santa Maria Island: two land snails (Oxychilus agostinhoi Martins 1981 and Leptaxis minor Backhuys, 1975) and a semi-slug, Azorivitrina angulosa (Morelet, 1860). Although, arthropods are not direct targets of the project, their communities can provide useful indicators of overall habitat quality. A previous survey of mixed forests on Santa Maria provided the baseli

Transcriptome characterisation, SSR marker development and genetic diversity analysis of the endangered species Camellia cucphuongensis Ninh & Rosmann using Illumina sequencing.

Overharvesting for ornamental and medicinal purposes, combined with ongoing habitat loss and fragmentation in Vietnam, has severely threatened wild populations of Camellia cucphuongensis. Effective conservation and management of this species, therefore, require robust genomic resources and informative molecular markers to quantify genetic diversity and population structure. In this study, we generated the first transcriptome dataset for C. cucphuongensis and developed expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) markers using Illumina HiSeq™ 4000 sequencing. Hybridisation between different species of waterfowl.

When waterfowl are kept in mixed collections in captivity, interbreeding between different species can often be observed. Five cases of hybridisation between different ducks and teals raised together have been described. The first case from 2011 was a cross between a male Hottentot teal (Spatula hottentota) and a female Silver teal (Spatula versicolor), from the same genus Spatula, the offspring resembling the mother in size, while in decoration, it primarily took on the features of the father. In a second hybridisation from 2018, between a male Ferruginous duck (Aythya nyroca) and a female Ma

Contribution to Charophyceae knowledge in Slovakia - re-discovery of Nitella gracilis.

BACKGROUND: Nitella gracilis (Charophyceae) is a rare charophyte, previously considered regionally extinct in Slovakia. During a systematic survey of charophytes conducted between 2021 and 2025, new localities of this species were discovered. These findings represent the first confirmed records of the species in Slovakia in more than 45 years. The results highlight the importance of small temporary waterbodies such as forest road puddles for the conservation of charophytes. NEW INFORMATION: We found Nitella gracilis in two localities. The first locality was found in a forest pool in the Krupi

Floral visitors and potential pollinators of Calanthe discolor and C. striata in South Korea.

Numerous Calanthe (Orchidaceae) species are considered food-deceptive orchids because they attract floral visitors without providing rewards. In this study, we investigated floral visitors and their different types of behaviour in natural populations of Calanthe discolor and C. striata in South Korea during peak flowering to identify pollinaria-carrying visitors and assess whether the observations suggest potential pollinator sharing between the two taxa. A total of 73 visitation events involving 17 insect species were recorded on C. discolor. Diptera accounted for most visitation events, but

Dictyolimon gilesii (Plumbaginaceae), a new generic record to China, with special reference to its first plastome.

BACKGROUND: Dictyolimon (Plumbaginaceae, Caryophyllales) is a small genus with three currently accepted species. Nevertheless, its distribution remains poorly known, with records confined to Afghanistan, Pakistan and India (Kashmir). During recent fieldwork on the eastern Pamir Plateau in China, we discovered a distinctive perennial herb, identifiable as Dictyolimon gilesii. This species is characterised by densely rosulate, coriaceous, obovate or spatulate leaves; spikelets with 3-10-flowers (typically 6), sessile; bifid petals; a pubescent calyx tube; styles free from the base; and oblique-c
