Multifaceted case management during pregnancy is associated with better child outcomes and less fetal alcohol syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women participated in multifaceted case management (MCM) to prevent Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). METHODS: Women recruited from antenatal clinics for a longitudinal child development study were screened for alcohol use. Forty-four pregnant women were defined as high-risk drinkers on the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) by an AUDIT score ≥8 and participated in 18 months of MCM to facilitate reduction or cessation of alcohol consumption. Forty-one women completed MCM. Fifty-five equally high-risk women who received standard antenatal care comprise

Comparison of Efavirenz and Doravirine Developmental Toxicity in an Embryo Animal Model.

In the past, one of the most widely used non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI) in first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) of HIV infection was efavirenz (EFV), which is already used as a cost-effective treatment in developing countries due to its efficacy, tolerability, and availability. However, EFV also demonstrates several adverse effects, like hepatotoxicity, altered lipid profile, neuropsychological symptoms, and behavioral effects in children after in utero exposure. In 2018, another NNRTI, doravirine (DOR), was approved due to its similar efficacy but better safety pro

Impact of extracardiac pathology on head growth in fetuses with congenital heart defect.

OBJECTIVE: Neurodevelopmental delay is frequently encountered in children with a congenital heart defect (CHD). Fetuses with major CHD have a smaller head circumference (HC), irrespective of altered cerebral flow or brain oxygenation. This cohort study compared head growth in cases with isolated vs those with non-isolated CHD to evaluate the effect of additional pathology on head size in these fetuses. METHOD: All CHD cases diagnosed prenatally in the period January 2002-July 2014 were selected from our regional registry, PRECOR. Cases of multiple pregnancy, and those affected by maternal dia

Motor and cortico-striatal-thalamic connectivity alterations in intrauterine growth restriction.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine growth restriction is associated with short- and long-term neurodevelopmental problems. Structural brain changes underlying these alterations have been described with the use of different magnetic resonance-based methods that include changes in whole structural brain networks. However, evaluation of specific brain circuits and its correlation with related functions has not been investigated in intrauterine growth restriction. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aimed to investigate differences in tractography-related metrics in cortico-striatal-thalamic and motor networks i

Effectiveness of Reflex Integration Exercises on Sensory-Motor Outcomes in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Quasi-experimental Study.

Background Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition associated with impairments in sensory processing, motor coordination, and postural control. A prominent yet underappreciated contributor to these deficits is the persistence of primitive reflexes beyond the expected developmental timeline. Reflexes such as the asymmetrical tonic neck reflex (ATNR), symmetrical tonic neck reflex (STNR), and tonic labyrinthine reflex (TLR) are brainstem-mediated automatisms that, under typical neurodevelopment, integrate within the first year of life. In children with ASD, their

Prenatal COVID-19 Exposure and Neurodevelopmental and Neurological Disorders in Children.

IMPORTANCE: Previous studies suggest that children exposed to COVID-19 during pregnancy may have an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders. However, these studies had limited follow-up periods and primarily evaluated broad neurodevelopmental concerns. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether exposure to maternal COVID-19 during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of neurodevelopmental or neurological disorders among offspring. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was conducted between November 2025 and February 2026. The sample included all children born in Norway bet

Anti-CD20 Therapies in Pediatric Acquired Demyelinating Syndromes: Evidence Across MS, AQP4-IgG-Positive NMOSD and MOGAD.

Pediatric-acquired demyelinating syndromes, including multiple sclerosis (MS), aquaporin-4-IgG-positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (AQP4+NMOSD), and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) constitute distinct entities arising during critical periods of neurodevelopment. Early and effective treatment is therefore crucial to prevent long-term disability. Converging evidence supports a central role of B-cells in central nervous system autoimmunity, extending beyond antibody production to include antigen presentation, cytokine production, and T-cell modu

Early Neurodevelopmental Milestones in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Retrospective Observational Study.

Introduction Early diagnosis and intervention in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are crucial for improving cognitive, social, and adaptive outcomes. ASD is characterized by deficits in social communication and interaction, alongside restricted and repetitive behaviors. Although diagnosis typically occurs around age three, developmental concerns often emerge within the first year, particularly in language, social engagement, and adaptive functioning. Early identification of these markers allows timely referral, assessment, and intervention. This study aimed to characterize early neurodevelopment

Autonomic Dysfunction and Blood Pressure in Glaucoma Patients: The Lifelines Cohort Study.

IMPORTANCE: Despite evidence of an association between prenatal acetaminophen exposure and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in offspring, the drug is not contraindicated during pregnancy, possibly because prior studies have relied on maternal self-report, failed to quantify acetaminophen dose, and lacked mechanistic insight. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between prenatal acetaminophen exposure measured in meconium (hereinafter referred to as meconium acetaminophen) and ADHD in children aged 6 to 7 years, along with the potential for mediation by functional brain connect

Home visits following hospital discharge for families with preterm and low-birthweight infants.

RATIONALE: Home visiting programmes are widely used to support families of preterm and low-birthweight (LBW) infants after hospital discharge, yet evidence on their effectiveness is limited and of variable quality, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). A comprehensive, up-to-date review was needed to inform healthcare decisions. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of home visits following hospital discharge compared to standard of care or no home visits, for families/caregivers of preterm or LBW infants to reduce morbidity and mortality and enhance health and well-bein

Induction of labour at or beyond 37 weeks' gestation.

BACKGROUND: Risks of stillbirth or neonatal death increase as gestation continues beyond term (around 40 weeks' gestation). It is unclear whether a policy of labour induction can reduce these risks. This Cochrane Review is an update of a review that was originally published in 2006 and subsequently updated in 2012 and 2018. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of a policy of labour induction at or beyond 37 weeks' gestation compared with a policy of awaiting spontaneous labour indefinitely (or until a later gestational age, or until a maternal or fetal indication for induction of labour arises)

Early Detection of 5 Neurodevelopmental Disorders of Children and Prevention of Postnatal Depression With a Mobile Health App: Observational Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Delay in the diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) in toddlers and postnatal depression (PND) is a major public health issue. In both cases, early intervention is crucial but too rarely implemented in practice. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to determine if a dedicated mobile app can improve screening of 5 NDDs (autism spectrum disorder [ASD], language delay, dyspraxia, dyslexia, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD]) and reduce PND incidence. METHODS: We performed an observational, cross-sectional, data-based study in a population of young parents in France wit
