In HIV infected persons, Cryptosporidium parvum causes chronic diarrhoea, which can be life-threatening in persons with AIDS and with a low CD4+ T cell count. However, a specific and effective therapy for this opportunistic infection does not yet exist. Since the use of a combination therapy with a highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the prevalence of C. parvum infection in persons with AIDS has been strongly reduced. This favorable outcome was usually attributed to the recovery of the host immunity, however improvements from this opportunistic infection have been demonstrated even i

Ownership of domestic cats in North America has been on the increase; however, there are only a few surveys conducted on the prevalence of parasitism in client-owned cats over years. Our study objective was to evaluate parasite prevalence through statistical analysis of fecal examination results for client-owned cats on samples submitted to the veterinary parasitology diagnostic laboratory of Oklahoma State University over a 12-year period. All results of centrifugal flotation, saline direct smear, sedimentation, and Baermann examinations on fecal samples submitted to the Boren Veterinary Medi

BACKGROUND: Serological antibody levels are a sensitive marker of pathogen exposure, and advances in multiplex assays have created enormous potential for large-scale, integrated infectious disease surveillance. Most methods to analyze antibody measurements reduce quantitative antibody levels to seropositive and seronegative groups, but this can be difficult for many pathogens and may provide lower resolution information than quantitative levels. Analysis methods have predominantly maintained a single disease focus, yet integrated surveillance platforms would benefit from methodologies that wor

Waterborne pathogens present a significant threat to people living with the human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH). This study presents a randomized, controlled trial that evaluates whether a household-level ceramic water filter (CWF) intervention can improve drinking water quality and decrease days of diarrhea in PLWH in rural South Africa. Seventy-four participants were randomized in an intervention group with CWFs and a control group without filters. Participants in the CWF arm received CWFs impregnated with silver nanoparticles and associated safe-storage containers. Water and stool samples w

BACKGROUND: Enteric pathogens like Salmonella and Shigella species as well as intestinal parasites (IPs) are among the main causative agents of diarrhea in people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), particularly in low income countries like Ethiopia. Antimicrobial resistance against commonly prescribed drugs has become a major global threat. This study, therefore, aimed at determining the magnitude of Salmonella, Shigella and IPs infections, their predicting factors, and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern among HIV infected and non-infected dia

Improvements have been made to the safety and efficacy of bumped kinase inhibitors, and they are advancing toward human and animal use for treatment of cryptosporidiosis. As the understanding of bumped kinase inhibitor pharmacodynamics for cryptosporidiosis therapy has increased, it has become clear that better compounds for efficacy do not necessarily require substantial systemic exposure. We now have a bumped kinase inhibitor with reduced systemic exposure, acceptable safety parameters, and efficacy in both the mouse and newborn calf models of cryptosporidiosis. Potential cardiotoxicity is t

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cryptosporidiosis is usually a self-limiting illness in healthy patients. However, it can cause severe life threatening complications in immunocompromised patients. The effect of cryptosporidial infection on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has not been well studied and available literature is largely restricted to adult case reports. The purpose of this study is to describe the clinical characteristics of cryptosporidial infection in children with IBD.
METHODS: Stool studies from children with IBD presenting with presumed relapse during the period 2005-2011 were reviewed

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to define the characteristics and microbiology of persistent diarrhea (PD) in US children.
METHODS: Six-month prospective cohort study of a convenience sample of 604 healthy 6- to 36-month-old children recruited by the Slone Center Office-based Research Network.
RESULTS: Of 611 diarrhea episodes, 50 (8.2%) lasted < or = 14 days. The incidence of PD was 0.18 episodes per person-year, and the median duration of episodes was 22.0 days (range, 14-64 days). PD episodes were more likely than acute episodes to result in a medical visit (28.0% vs 8.2%; P = 0

Few studies have assessed risk factors for sporadic cryptosporidiosis in industrialized countries, even though it may be numerically more common than outbreaks of disease. We carried out case-control studies assessing risk factors for sporadic disease in Melbourne and Adelaide, which have water supplies from different ends of the raw water spectrum. In addition to examining drinking water, we assessed several other exposures. 201 cases and 795 controls were recruited for Melbourne and 134 cases and 536 controls were recruited for Adelaide. Risk factors were similar for the two cities, with swi

BACKGROUND: Intestinal protozoal infections caused by Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Cryptosporidium parvum are prevalent in Malaysia. They cause severe diarrheal diseases with symptoms such as bloody stools, abdominal pain, stomach discomfort, and bloating. These infection outbreaks have been reported in diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and geographical regions usually during the rainy season or in areas with poor sanitation. Despite the importance of these infections, data on its overall prevalence, risk factors, and diagnostic methods remain limited.

In 1997, enhanced health assessments were performed for 390 (10%) of approximately 4,000 Barawan refugees resettling to the United States. Of the refugees who received enhanced assessments, 26 (7%) had malaria parasitemia and 128 (38%) had intestinal parasites, while only 2 (2%) had Schistosoma haematobium eggs in the urine. Mass therapy for malaria (a single oral dose of 25 mg/kg of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine) was given to all Barawan refugees 1-2 days before resettlement. Refugees >2 years of age and nonpregnant women received a single oral dose of 600 mg albendazole for intestinal parasite t

BACKGROUND: Opportunistic infections have several complications and negative impacts on the patients and the family. Despite the improvement in the provision of antiretroviral therapy, opportunistic intestinal parasitic infections are major public health concerns, especially in areas with poor sanitation and inadequate clean water access. The burden varies considerably by socio-demographic area, drug adherence, and CD4 level. This study was conducted due to the limited findings in the study area, and it aims to explore certain variables related to opportunistic infections that have not been we

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasite infections (IPIs) are a major cause of diarrhea and serve as a critical factor in infections affecting both immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals. Opportunistic infections, in particular, present substantial challenges for those who are immunocompromised, such as cancer patients undergoing treatment. Therefore, this review aimed to assess the overall prevalence of these parasites in this vulnerable population worldwide.
METHODS: We conducted a search across several databases, including PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science, African Journals Online

Clostridium difficile, a Gram-positive spore-forming bacillus, is the most common identifiable etiologic agent of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. The incidence of Clostridium difficile infections among hospitalized children has been increasing across the world. The aim of our study was to evaluate occurrence of Clostridium difficile and some other gastrointestinal pathogens among hospitalized pediatric patients in Georgia, as far as currently statistical data on the topic is very limited in the country. One of the objectives of the study was to test and pilot the real-time Polymerase Chain Rea

Choline kinase (CK) is a homodimeric enzyme that catalyses the transfer of the ATP γ-phosphate to choline, generating phosphocholine and ADP in the presence of magnesium. Several isoforms of CK are present in humans but only the HsCKα has been associated with cancer and validated as a drug target to treat this disease. As a consequence a large number of compounds based on Hemicholinium (HC-3) have been described. Two compounds, previously reported to inhibit the human enzyme, have recently been shown to inhibit P. falciparum CK (PfCK) and therefore their potential applications might be anticip

In recent years, the isolation of parasitic DNA from faecal samples and PCR techniques, have been improved and simplified. Moreover, the introduction of real-time PCR has made it possible to multiplex different targets into one reaction. These new technical possibilities make it feasible to introduce PCR with its unsurpassed sensitivity and specificity in a routine laboratory setting for the diagnosis of intestinal parasites. Detection rates of the parasitic infections included in the PCR are increased significantly compared with microscopy. Molecular diagnostics, especially in children, revea

IntroductionDiarrhea is a frequent complication in hematologic patients, being an infectious cause frequently suspected. Rapid and accurate detection of gastrointestinal pathogens is vital in immunocompromised hosts. The aim of this study was to compare routine diagnostic methods versus a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the diagnosis of infectious diarrhea in immunocompromised hematologic patients.Material and methodsWe conducted a prospective observational study from March 2015 to January 2016 to compare conventional methods for the diagnosis of infectious diarrhea with FI

BackgroundDiarrhea is frequently seen in autologous stem cell transplantation. Although toxicity related to conditioning is the most common cause, infectious pathogens can play a distinctive role particularly in certain regions and environments.MethodsThe role of enteropathogens was investigated in 47 patients submitted to autologous stem cell transplantation at a Brazilian center between May 2011 and May 2013. All patients who presented with diarrhea consented to stool sample analysis to identify the etiological agents including coccidia, Strongyloides sp., Clostridium difficile and other pat
