[Effects of deformational plagiocephaly during the first 12 months on the psychomotor development of prematurely born infants].

AIMS: The link between deformational plagiocephaly and psychomotor development is a recurrent question in medical publications. Main publications concentrate on term infants, but there is a lack of data on the impact of deformational plagiocephaly on the long-term neurodevelopment of premature infants. We attempted to establish a possible relation between deformational plagiocephaly during the 1st year of life and the psychomotor score at 4 years in prematurely born infants. Other risk factors potentially impacting the psychomotor score were also studied. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective

Serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor and related factors after intravitreous bevacizumab injection for retinopathy of prematurity.

IMPORTANCE: Intravitreous injections of bevacizumab (IVB) have been found to be effective for the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). However, serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) have been found to be suppressed for 2 weeks after IVB in patients with ROP. Changes in serum VEGF levels after IVB in patients with ROP may be important because VEGF also plays a role in the neurodevelopment of newborns. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation of levels of VEGF and related growth factors with bevacizumab levels in the systemic circulation after IVB in patients with

[Neurobiological inscriptions of psychological trauma during early childhood].

Neurodevelopment is a highly complex process, influenced by a wide range of interacting genetic and environmental factors. Recent developments in fetal, neonatal and infant behavioural genetics and brain imaging methods have allowed for more detailed investigation of the effects of early adverse environment on the developing brain. This review aims to provide background for neurobiological understanding of how the prolonged exposure to stress or trauma during early childhood affects subsequent cognitive, emotional and social development. Initially, a brief overview of brain development is prov

[Neurological soft signs in pervasive developmental disorders].

BACKGROUND: Many studies have focused on specific motor signs in autism and Asperger's syndrome, but few has been published on the complete range of neurological soft signs (NSS) in children with pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). Scarce are the studies evaluating NSS in children suffering from PDD not otherwise specified (PDDNOS). METHODS: This study compared performance of 11 autistic children (AD) and 10 children with PDDNOS, with controls matched on age, sex and cognitive performance on Krebs et al.'s NSS scale. Because of the duration of the assessments and specific difficulties enc

Effectiveness of Reflex Integration Exercises on Sensory-Motor Outcomes in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Quasi-experimental Study.

Background Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition associated with impairments in sensory processing, motor coordination, and postural control. A prominent yet underappreciated contributor to these deficits is the persistence of primitive reflexes beyond the expected developmental timeline. Reflexes such as the asymmetrical tonic neck reflex (ATNR), symmetrical tonic neck reflex (STNR), and tonic labyrinthine reflex (TLR) are brainstem-mediated automatisms that, under typical neurodevelopment, integrate within the first year of life. In children with ASD, their

Prenatal COVID-19 Exposure and Neurodevelopmental and Neurological Disorders in Children.

IMPORTANCE: Previous studies suggest that children exposed to COVID-19 during pregnancy may have an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders. However, these studies had limited follow-up periods and primarily evaluated broad neurodevelopmental concerns. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether exposure to maternal COVID-19 during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of neurodevelopmental or neurological disorders among offspring. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was conducted between November 2025 and February 2026. The sample included all children born in Norway bet

Anti-CD20 Therapies in Pediatric Acquired Demyelinating Syndromes: Evidence Across MS, AQP4-IgG-Positive NMOSD and MOGAD.

Pediatric-acquired demyelinating syndromes, including multiple sclerosis (MS), aquaporin-4-IgG-positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (AQP4+NMOSD), and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) constitute distinct entities arising during critical periods of neurodevelopment. Early and effective treatment is therefore crucial to prevent long-term disability. Converging evidence supports a central role of B-cells in central nervous system autoimmunity, extending beyond antibody production to include antigen presentation, cytokine production, and T-cell modu

Neuropsychological Outcomes in 6-Year-Old Children of Women With Epilepsy: A Prospective Nonrandomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Antiseizure medications (ASMs) are potential teratogens commonly prescribed for multiple indications. ASM fetal exposure can impair neurodevelopment. Folate improves pregnancy outcomes, but higher doses may pose risks. OBJECTIVES: To compare the outcomes of 6-year-old children of women with epilepsy (WWE) vs those of healthy women (HW), and assess the association of outcomes to third-trimester ASM exposures. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: After informed consent, pregnant WWE and HW were enrolled from 2012 through 2016 in this prospective, multicenter, nonrandomized clinical t

Early Neurodevelopmental Milestones in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Retrospective Observational Study.

Introduction Early diagnosis and intervention in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are crucial for improving cognitive, social, and adaptive outcomes. ASD is characterized by deficits in social communication and interaction, alongside restricted and repetitive behaviors. Although diagnosis typically occurs around age three, developmental concerns often emerge within the first year, particularly in language, social engagement, and adaptive functioning. Early identification of these markers allows timely referral, assessment, and intervention. This study aimed to characterize early neurodevelopment

Autonomic Dysfunction and Blood Pressure in Glaucoma Patients: The Lifelines Cohort Study.

IMPORTANCE: Despite evidence of an association between prenatal acetaminophen exposure and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in offspring, the drug is not contraindicated during pregnancy, possibly because prior studies have relied on maternal self-report, failed to quantify acetaminophen dose, and lacked mechanistic insight. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between prenatal acetaminophen exposure measured in meconium (hereinafter referred to as meconium acetaminophen) and ADHD in children aged 6 to 7 years, along with the potential for mediation by functional brain connect

Prenatal exposure to PFAS, associations with child cognitive ability and modification by maternal Vitamin D status: The MABC study.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure may adversely influence neurodevelopment. However, few studies have considered whether cumulative PFAS exposure over the entire course of pregnancy impacts child cognitive development and whether nutritional factors modify these associations. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether Vitamin D status modifies the association between maternal PFAS exposure during pregnancy and child cognitive ability. METHODS: This analysis used 728 mother-child pairs in the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort (MABC), a population-based Chinese birth cohort

Long-Term Outcome of Neonates and Infants whose Mothers Tested Positive for SARS-CoV-2 during Pregnancy - a Pilot of the Post-CRONOS Project.

OBJECTIVE: Long-term effects on infants of mothers with SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy are increasingly discussed in the literature. Besides potential neurodevelopment impairments after intrauterine SARS-CoV-2 exposure, there might be differences in the postnatal pediatric care of those children, like the timing of preventive medical examinations (PME) or vaccinations. In this first national long-term follow-up study of women included in the CRONOS registry, we describe maternal impressions of their child´s development and the prevalence of regulatory disorders, and we analyze the timin

Comparison of Efavirenz and Doravirine Developmental Toxicity in an Embryo Animal Model.

In the past, one of the most widely used non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI) in first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) of HIV infection was efavirenz (EFV), which is already used as a cost-effective treatment in developing countries due to its efficacy, tolerability, and availability. However, EFV also demonstrates several adverse effects, like hepatotoxicity, altered lipid profile, neuropsychological symptoms, and behavioral effects in children after in utero exposure. In 2018, another NNRTI, doravirine (DOR), was approved due to its similar efficacy but better safety pro
