Sensitive life-stage periods and genetic susceptibility in the association between air pollution and ischaemic stroke risk: a Bayesian life-course analysis.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution exposure has been linked to ischaemic stroke (IS), yet the sensitive life stages for pollution-related IS risk and the interplay of genetic susceptibility remain unclear. METHODS: We analysed 404 234 IS-free participants from a large UK prospective cohort. Exposures to PM2.5, SO2 and O3 were estimated across five life stages (toddlerhood, childhood, adolescence, youth and middle-aged to older adulthood) and cumulatively from birth. Bayesian life-course models identified sensitive exposure windows and quantile g-computation estimated mixture effects. Gene-environment

Effect of the fine fraction of particulate matter versus the coarse mass and other pollutants on daily mortality in Santiago, Chile.

Daily counts of non-accidental deaths in Santiago, Chile, from 1988 to 1996 were regressed on six air pollutants--fine particles (PM2.5), coarse particles (PM10-2.5), CO, SO2, NO2, and O3. Controlling for seasonal and meteorological conditions was done using three different models--a generalized linear model, a generalized additive model, and a generalized additive model on previously filtered data. Single- and two-pollutant models were tested for lags of 1-5 days and the average of the previous 2-5 days. The increase in mortality associated with the mean levels of air pollution varied from 4

Understanding Diabetic Wounds: A Review of Mechanisms, Pathophysiology, and Multimodal Management Strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic wounds are a prevalent and impairing consequence of diabetes mellitus that significantly impacts people's lives and global healthcare systems. Because of disturbances in the wound-healing cascade, these intricate, persistent wounds frequently refuse to heal. Focusing on diabetic wound formation, this study seeks to clarify the complex mechanisms and pathophysiology involved while offering a thorough overview of modern multimodal therapy techniques. The etiology of diabetic wounds entails a complex interplay between tissue destruction caused by hyperglycemia, neuropathy,

Sodium nitrite poisoning: A series of 20 fatalities in which post-mortem blood nitrite and nitrate concentrations are reported.

Sodium nitrite has several industrial applications however its accidental or intentional ingestion has been associated with severe toxicity and death. We present a series of 20 cases over 2 years in which evidence of sodium nitrite ingestion was found at the scene and supported by biochemical analysis of post-mortem blood nitrite and nitrate levels. Routine toxicological screening was performed on post-mortem blood samples received at University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust, including ethanol analysis by headspace gas chromatography-flame ionisation detection (HS GC-FID), drug screen

Monitoring ambient air pollution and pulmonary function in asthmatic children by mobile applications in COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Several public health measures were implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, little is known about the real-time assessment of environmental exposure on the pulmonary function of asthmatic children. Therefore, we developed a mobile phone application for capturing real-time day-to-day dynamic changes in ambient air pollution during the pandemic. We aim to explore the change in ambient air pollutants between pre-lockdown, lockdowns, and lockdowns and analyze the association between pollutants and PEF mediated by mite sensitization and seasonal change. METHOD: A prospective

Inferred vehicular emissions at a near-road site: Impacts of COVID-19 restrictions, traffic patterns, and ambient air temperature.

Vehicles are a major source of anthropogenic emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and black carbon (BC). CO and NOx are known to be harmful to human health and contribute to ozone formation, while BC absorbs solar radiation that contributes to global warming and also has negative impacts on human health and visibility. Travel restrictions implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic provide researchers the opportunity to study the impact of large, on-road traffic reductions on local air quality. Traffic counts collected along Interstate-95, a major eight-lane highway in Maryla

How mobility restrictions policy and atmospheric conditions impacted air quality in the State of São Paulo during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Mobility restrictions are among actions to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and have been pointed as reasons for improving air quality, especially in large cities. However, it is crucial to assess the impact of atmospheric conditions on air quality and air pollutant dispersion in the face of the potential variability of all sources. In this study, the impact of mobility restrictions on the air quality was analyzed for the most populous Brazilian State, São Paulo, severely impacted by COVID-19. Ground-based air quality data (PM10, PM2.5, CO, SO2, NOx, NO2, NO, and O3) were used from

Nitric oxide metabolism in the human placenta during aberrant maternal inflammation.

KEY POINTS: Nitric oxide (NO) is a gasotransmitter with important physiological and pathophysiological roles in pregnancy. There is limited information available about the sources and metabolism of NO and its bioactive metabolites (NOx) in both normal and complicated pregnancies. The present study characterized and quantified endogenous NOx in human and mouse placenta following determination of the stability of exogenous NOx in placental homogenates. NOx have differential stability in placental homogenates. NO and iron nitrosyl species (FeNOs), are relatively unstable in placental homogenates

COVID-19 and Paediatric Dentistry after the lockdown.

Coronaviruses are a large family of respiratory RNA viruses that can cause severe infections of the airways, as we have seen in the past, difficult months. We know that the route of transmission of the disease is through saliva droplets produced by speaking, coughing and sneezing. The virus is highly infectious, and each infected individual infects 2.5 people on average. The average incubation period is about 5 days, with an estimated range from 2 to 14 days; the incubation period in children is similar, however some have exhibited a longer incubation. The virus binds to the cellular receptor

Simulating lightning NO production in CMAQv5.2: performance evaluations.

This study assesses the impact of the lightning nitric oxide (LNO) production schemes in the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model on ground-level air quality as well as aloft atmospheric chemistry through detailed evaluation of model predictions of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) and ozone (O3) with corresponding observations for the US. For ground-level evaluations, hourly O3 and NO x values from the U.S. EPA Air Quality System (AQS) monitoring network are used to assess the impact of different LNO schemes on model prediction of these species in time and space. Vertical evaluations are perfo

NOx instrument intercomparison for laboratory biomass burning source studies and urban ambient measurements in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Understanding nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) measurement techniques is important as air-quality standards become more stringent, important sources change, and instrumentation develops. NOx observations are compared in two environments: source testing from the combustion of Southwestern biomass fuels, and urban, ambient NOx. The latter occurred in the urban core of Albuquerque, NM, at an EPA NCORE site during February-March 2017, a relatively clean photochemical environment with ozone (O3) <60 ppb for all but 6 hr. We compare two techniques used to measure NOx in biomass smoke during biomass

Comparison of the MOVES2010a, MOBILE6.2, and EMFAC2007 mobile source emission models with on-road traffic tunnel and remote sensing measurements.

UNLABELLED: The Desert Research Institute conducted an on-road mobile source emission study at a traffic tunnel in Van Nuys, California, in August 2010 to measure fleet-averaged, fuel-based emission factors. The study also included remote sensing device (RSD) measurements by the University of Denver of 13,000 vehicles near the tunnel. The tunnel and RSD fleet-averaged emission factors were compared in blind fashion with the corresponding modeled factors calculated by ENVIRON International Corporation using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) MOVES2010a (Motor Vehicle Emissions Simul

Ultraviolet B-photoprotection efficiency of mesocosm-enclosed natural phytoplankton communities from different latitudes: Rimouski (Canada) and Ubatuba (Brazil).

Photoprotection against UV-B radiation (UVBR; 280-320 nm) was examined in natural phytoplankton communities from two coastal environments at different latitudes: temperate Rimouski (Canada) and tropical Ubatuba (Brazil). Mesocosm experiments were performed at these sites to examine the response of phytoplankton to increases in UVBR that corresponded to local depletions of 30% and 60% in atmospheric ozone levels (low and high UVBR treatments, respectively). A fluorescence method using a pulse amplitude modulation fluorometer (Xe-PAM, Walz, Germany) with selective UV filters was used to estimate

On the induction of volatile organic compound emissions by plants as consequence of wounding or fluctuations of light and temperature.

Among the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by plants, some are characteristic of stress conditions, but their biosynthesis and the metabolic and environmental control over the emission are still unclear. We performed experiments to clarify whether (1) the emission following wounding can occur at distance from the wounding site, from VOC pools subjected to metabolic signals; and (2) the emission of biogenic VOCs generated by membrane damage (e.g. consequent to wounding or ozone exposure) can also be induced by exposure to high light and high temperature, recurrent in nature. Off-flavor formation in omega-3-rich oils: Mechanisms, volatile markers, and emerging mitigation technologies.

Lipid autoxidation of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5 n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6 n-3) generates volatile carbonyl compounds-including propanal, hexanal, (E)-2-nonenal, and (E,Z)-2,4-decadienal-that contribute to fishy, rancid, and cardboard-like off-flavors and limit the commercialization of omega-3-enriched foods. Seventy-six percent of the global population fails to meet recommended EPA + DHA intake thresholds, driving demand for stable functional food applications (Calder et al., 2025). This review integrates off-flavor formation chemistry with a comparative assessment of con

How air pollution fuels respiratory infections in children: current insights.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution is a significant global health concern, particularly for younger children who are especially susceptible to its adverse effects. Pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NO and NO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3), and carbon monoxide (CO) are associated with increased risks of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) and lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI). While this association is well-documented, there are critical gaps in understanding the magnitude of these risks, the roles of specific pollutants, and the influence of age, sex, and e

Molecular Mechanisms of N-Acetylcysteine in RSV Infections and Air Pollution-Induced Alterations: A Scoping Review.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a mucolytic agent with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the most important etiological factors of lower respiratory tract infections, and exposure to air pollution appears to be additionally associated with higher RSV incidence and disease severity. We aimed to systematically review the existing literature to determine which molecular mechanisms mediate the effects of NAC in an RSV infection and air pollution, and to identify the knowledge gaps in this field. A search for original studies was carried out in
