The expression of microRNAs and exposure to environmental contaminants related to human health: a review.

Environmental contaminants exposure may lead to detrimental changes to the microRNAs (miRNAs) expression resulting in several health effects. miRNAs, small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression, have multiple transcript targets and thereby regulate several signalling molecules. Even a minor alteration in the abundance of one miRNA can have deep effects on global gene expression. Altered patterns of miRNAs can be responsible for changes linked to various health outcomes, suggesting that specific miRNAs are activated in pathophysiological processes. In this review, we provide an overview

Short-term association between ambient air pollution and lung cancer mortality.

RATIONALE: Long-term exposure to air pollution has been associated with increased lung cancer incidence and mortality. However, the short-term association between air pollution and lung cancer mortality (LCM) remains largely unknown. METHODS: We collected daily data on particulate matter with diameter <2.5 μm (PM2.5), particulate matter with diameter < 10 μm (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O3), and LCM in three of the biggest cities in China, i.e. Beijing, Chongqing, and Guangzhou, from 2013 to 2015. We first estimated city-specific relationships between air pollutants and LCM using

Assessing the impact of anthropogenic pollution on isoprene-derived secondary organic aerosol formation in PM2.5 collected from the Birmingham, Alabama, ground site during the 2013 Southern Oxidant and Aerosol Study.

In the southeastern US, substantial emissions of isoprene from deciduous trees undergo atmospheric oxidation to form secondary organic aerosol (SOA) that contributes to fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Laboratory studies have revealed that anthropogenic pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), oxides of nitrogen (NO x ), and aerosol acidity, can enhance SOA formation from the hydroxyl radical (OH)-initiated oxidation of isoprene; however, the mechanisms by which specific pollutants enhance isoprene SOA in ambient PM2.5 remain unclear. As one aspect of an investigation to examine how anthropog

Combination of granular activated carbon adsorption and deep-bed filtration as a single advanced wastewater treatment step for organic micropollutant and phosphorus removal.

Adsorption onto granular activated carbon (GAC) is an established technology in water and advanced wastewater treatment for the removal of organic substances from the liquid phase. Besides adsorption, the removal of particulate matter by filtration and biodegradation of organic substances in GAC contactors has frequently been reported. The application of GAC as both adsorbent for organic micropollutant (OMP) removal and filter medium for solids retention in tertiary wastewater filtration represents an energy- and space saving option, but has rarely been considered because high dissolved organi

Diversity and geographical distribution of potential carbon monoxide oxidizers using molybdenum-containing enzymes in the ocean.

Carbon monoxide (CO) evolves from photochemical or thermal reactions in the ocean. It is estimated that 90% of oceanic CO is consumed by CO-oxidizing prokaryotes, which convert CO to carbon dioxide using molybdenum-containing CO dehydrogenase (Mo-CODH). Investigation of form I cox, which encodes Mo-CODH, has revealed that oceanic prokaryotes with form I cox (potential cox-containing CO oxidizers: pcox-CO oxidizers) belong to eight phyla and occupy 10%-20% of prokaryotes. However, previous studies may have overestimated their diversity due to the use of less stringent criteria, and their ecolog

Long-term and short-term exposure to outdoor air pollution and its association with glycolipid metabolic disorders.

BACKGROUND: The association between ambient air pollution and glycolipid metabolic disorders (GMDs, including diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia) is still not well understood, especially when it comes to the different effects of long-term vs short-term exposure and the sources of pollutants (indoor or outdoor). AIM: To look at how outdoor particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, PM10) and ozone (O3), as well as indoor pollutants from solid fuels, are related to the risk of developing GMDs in a cohort that represents the national population. METHODS: We used a longitudinal cohort design to look at how

Heat Exposure and Cause-Specific Hospital Admissions in Spain: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: More frequent and intense exposure to extreme heat conditions poses a serious threat to public health. However, evidence on the association between heat and specific diagnoses of morbidity is still limited. We aimed to comprehensively assess the short-term association between cause-specific hospital admissions and high temperature, including the added effect of temperature variability and heat waves and the effect modification by humidity and air pollution. METHODS: We used data on cause-specific hospital admissions, weather (i.e., temperature and relative humidity), and air pollu

Air pollution impacts on in-hospital case-fatality rate of ischemic stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence suggests that air pollution exposure is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular diseases. Data regarding the impact of long-term air pollution exposure on ischemic stroke mortality are sparse. METHODS: The German nationwide inpatient sample was used to analyse all cases of hospitalized patients with ischemic stroke in Germany 2015-2019, which were stratified according to their residency. Data of the German Federal Environmental Agency regarding average values of air pollutants were assessed from 2015 to 2019 at district-level. Data were comb

Monitoring vs. modeled exposure data in time-series studies of ambient air pollution and acute health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Population-based short-term air pollution health studies often have limited spatiotemporally representative exposure data, leading to concerns of exposure measurement error. OBJECTIVE: To compare the use of monitoring and modeled exposure metrics in time-series analyses of air pollution and cardiorespiratory emergency department (ED) visits. METHODS: We obtained daily counts of ED visits for Atlanta, GA during 2009-2013. We leveraged daily ZIP code level concentration estimates for eight pollutants from nine exposure metrics. Metrics included central monitor (CM), monitor-based (

Ambient air pollution and in vitro fertilization treatment outcomes.

STUDY QUESTION: Is air pollution associated with IVF treatment outcomes in the USA? SUMMARY ANSWER: We did not find clear evidence of a meaningful association between reproductive outcomes and average daily concentrations of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) and ozone (O3). WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Maternal exposure to air pollution such as PM2.5, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide or O3 may increase risks for adverse perinatal outcomes. Findings from the few studies using data from IVF populations to investigate associations between specific pollutants and treatmen

Mortality risk of short-term air pollution exposure in urban and rural Chinese populations: A nationwide time-stratified case-crossover study, 2008-2020.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic evidence underpinning current World Health Organization Air Quality Guidelines (WHO AQGs) is primarily derived from urban populations, which remains challenging for implementing the guidelines in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where most people reside in rural or less developed areas. Here, we aimed to characterize the associations between ambient air pollution and mortality in Chinese populations living in both urban and rural areas, where rural populations have not been studied previously at national level. METHODS: In this nationwide time-stratified case

Association between Air Pollution and Hemoptysis.

Background. The relationship between air pollution and exacerbation of respiratory diseases is well established. Nevertheless, its association with hemoptysis has been poorly investigated. This paper describes the relationship of air pollutants with severe hemoptysis. Methods. All consecutive subjects with severe hemoptysis during a 5-year period were included. The relationship between the contamination measurements and the frequency of embolizations was analyzed using Poisson regressions. In these regressions, the dependent variable was the monthly number of embolizations in a given month and
