Reduced quadriceps deficit following dry arthroscopy compared to standard fluid arthroscopy at the time of MPFL reconstruction.

PURPOSE: Recurrent patellar dislocations (RPDs) are prevalent, particularly among adolescents. The 'Menu à la carte' technique facilitates personalized management of each patient through reconstruction of the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) while simultaneously addressing other anatomical factors that may contribute to instability. Arthroscopy, frequently performed prior to stabilization surgery to identify and treat intra-articular pathology, carries specific risks. Fluid arthroscopy can increase post-operative effusion, while dry arthroscopy may expose cartilage to potential damage due

Fish oil supplementation fails to modulate indices of muscle damage and muscle repair during acute recovery from eccentric exercise in trained young males.

We aimed to investigate the influence of 4-wk of fish oil (FO) supplementation on markers of muscle damage, inflammation, muscle soreness, and muscle function during acute recovery from eccentric exercise in moderately trained males. Sixteen moderately-trained males ingested 5 g/d of FO (n = 8) or soybean oil (placebo) capsules (n = 8) for 4-wk prior to- and 3-d following an acute eccentric exercise bout. Eccentric exercise consisted of 12 sets of isokinetic knee extension and knee flexion. Indices of muscle damage, soreness, function and inflammation were measured at baseline and during exerc

Comparison of SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Response 4 Weeks After Homologous vs Heterologous Third Vaccine Dose in Kidney Transplant Recipients: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Fewer than 50% of kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) develop antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein after 2 doses of an mRNA vaccine. Preliminary data suggest that a heterologous vaccination, combining mRNA and viral vector vaccines, may increase immunogenicity. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of a third dose of an mRNA vs a vector vaccine in KTRs who did not have antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein after 2 doses of an mRNA vaccine. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a single center, single-blinded, 1:1 randomized clinical trial of a third do

Inflammatory markers are associated with quality of life, physical activity, and gait speed but not sarcopenia in aged men (40-79 years).

BACKGROUND: Age-related chronic low-grade inflammation (inflammaging) is one of the proposed mechanisms behind sarcopenia. However, findings regarding inflammatory markers in sarcopenic older adults are conflicting. This study aimed to determine the association between inflammatory markers, prevalent as well as incident sarcopenia, sarcopenia-defining parameters, quality of life (QoL), and physical activity in middle-aged and older men. METHODS: Men aged 40-79 years (mean 59.66 ± 11.00y) were recruited from population registers in eight European centres for participation in the European Male

Arm adductor with arm abduction in rotator cuff tear patients vs. healthy -- design of a new measuring instrument [corrected].

The incidence of (a)symptomatic rotator cuff tears is high, but etiologic mechanisms are unclear and treatment outcomes vary. A practical tool providing objective outcome measures and insight into etiology and potential patient subgroups is desirable. Symptomatic cuff tears coincide with humerus cranialization. Adductor co-activation during active arm abduction has been reported to reduce subacromial narrowing and pain in cuff patients. We present an easy-to-use method to evaluate adductor co-activation. Twenty healthy controls and twenty full-thickness cuff tear patients exerted EMG-recorded

Upper Extremity Return to Sport Functional Testing: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Upper extremity return to sport (RTS) assessments are not standardized with respect to which metrics to use, if the metrics are appropriate for all populations and levels of competition, and what constitutes good or poor test performance. Subsequently, clinicians may utilize suboptimal metrics to evaluate RTS readiness, or forgo objective criteria altogether. The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties (reliability, agreement/measurement error, hypothesis testing/construct validity, criterion/predictive validity, responsiveness) of upper extremity functiona

Exploring options in revision shoulder arthroplasty: Is a humeral stem necessary in revision reverse shoulders?

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, revision of stemmed arthroplasty necessitated the use of longer stem. In young patients, preservation of bone stock is crucial for possible further operations and prevent stress shielding and further bone loss. AIM: To analyse the clinical and radiological outcomes of a series of patients who underwent revision shoulder arthroplasty, in whom the primary implant was stemmed total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) and the implant for revision surgery was a stemless metaphyseal reverse TSA without a stem expanding to the humeral diaphysis. METHODS: Between 2010 and 2020, 10

Biomechanical assessment of different transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion constructs in normal and osteoporotic condition: a finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: With the aging population, osteoporosis, which leads to poor fusion, has become a common challenge for lumbar surgery. In addition, most people with osteoporosis are elderly individuals with poor surgical tolerance, and poor bone quality can also weaken the stability of internal fixation. PURPOSE: This study compared the fixation strength of the bilateral traditional trajectory screw structure (TT-TT), the bilateral cortical bone trajectory screw structure (CBT-CBT), and the hybrid CBT-TT (CBT screws at the cranial level and TT screws at the caudal level) structure under d
