Zoonotic bacterial populations, gut fermentation characteristics and methane production in feedlot steers during oral nitroethane treatment and after the feeding of an experimental chlorate product.

Nitroethane inhibits the growth of certain zoonotic pathogens such as Campylobacter and Salmonella spp., foodborne pathogens estimated to cause millions of human infections each year, and enhances the Salmonella- and Escherichia coli-killing effect of an experimental chlorate product being developed as a feed additive to kill these bacteria immediately pre-harvest. Limited studies have shown that nitroethane inhibits ruminal methane production, which represents a loss of 2-12% of the host's gross energy intake and contributes to global warming and destruction of the ozone layer. The present st

Feasibility of Integrating Wearable Devices and Ecological Momentary Assessment for Real-Time Environmental Exposure Estimation: Proof-of-Concept Study.

BACKGROUND: Environmental exposures such as heat and air pollution are critical determinants of health, yet traditional assessment methods rely on stationary monitors or residential address proxies that fail to capture the exposures that individuals experience throughout the day. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility of integrating ecological momentary assessment (EMA), wearable devices, and continuous GPS tracking to capture real-time environmental exposures and to explore associations with concurrent health outcomes. METHODS: In total, 7 young adults (aged approximate

Nitric oxide contributes to cerebrovascular shear-mediated dilatation but not steady-state cerebrovascular reactivity to carbon dioxide.

Cerebrovascular CO2 reactivity (CVR) is often considered a bioassay of cerebrovascular endothelial function. We recently introduced a test of cerebral shear-mediated dilatation (cSMD) that may better reflect endothelial function. We aimed to determine the nitric oxide (NO)-dependency of CVR and cSMD. Eleven volunteers underwent a steady-state CVR test and transient CO2 test of cSMD during intravenous infusion of the NO synthase inhibitor NG -monomethyl-l-arginine (l-NMMA) or volume-matched saline (placebo; single-blinded and counter-balanced). We measured cerebral blood flow (CBF; duplex ultra

Environmental pollution and pregnancy: risks and uncertainties for the fetus and infant.

Numerous environmental contaminants can affect the developing embryo, fetus, or infant. This essay explores such questions as these: What is the importance in mutagenesis and teratogenesis of macroenvironmental pollutants such as the heavy metals, dioxin derivatives, polychlorinated diphenyl compounds, and pesticides? What is the significance of microenvironmental pollutants (or social environmental factors) such as tobacco smoke, alcohol, and pharmacologic agents over which exposed individuals have considerable control? What are some of the ethical and legal implications of these toxins of wh

Part 1. A time-series study of ambient air pollution and daily mortality in Shanghai, China.

Although the relation between outdoor air pollution and daily mortality has been examined in several Chinese cities, there are still a number of key scientific issues to be addressed concerning the health effects of air pollution in China. Given the changes over the past decade in concentrations and sources of air pollution (e.g., the change from one predominant source [coal combustion], which was typical of the twentieth century, to a mix of sources [coal combustion and motor-vehicle emissions]) and transition in China, it is worthwhile to investigate the acute effects of outdoor air pollutio

Environmental Exposures and Epigenetic Remodeling in Supraventricular Tachycardias: What Atrial Fibrillation Can and Cannot Tell Us.

Supraventricular tachycardias (SVTs), including atrial fibrillation (AF), atrioventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia (AVNRT), atrioventricular re-entrant tachycardia (AVRT), and focal atrial tachycardias, can possibly arise from the interaction of genetic predisposition and environmental exposures. While genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified 525 loci for atrial fibrillation and a small number of loci for AVNRT and accessory pathway-mediated tachycardia, the contribution of air pollution, lifestyle factors and psychosocial stress to epigenetic remodeling of atrial tissue re

[Adjunctive agents for nerve blocks/local injections in the treatment of zoster-associated pain: A systematic review based on levels of evidence].

OBJECTIVES: Zoster-associated pain (ZAP) is an acute and chronic neuropathic pain condition caused by reactivation of varicella-zoster virus in sensory ganglia, which can severely impair patients' quality of life. Nerve block is one of the most commonly used interventional techniques in clinical practice and is often combined with various adjunctive agents to enhance therapeutic efficacy. However, these agents differ in mechanisms of action and levels of evidence, and due to differences in the pathological mechanisms at different stages of ZAP, there is currently a lack of systematic evaluatio

Ambient Air Pollution and Hospitalizations for Schizophrenia in China.

IMPORTANCE: Schizophrenia episodes may be triggered by short-term environmental stimuli. Short-term increases in ambient air pollution levels may elevate the risk of schizophrenia episodes, yet few epidemiologic studies have examined this association. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether short-term increases in air pollution levels are associated with an additional risk of schizophrenia episodes, independent of absolute air pollution concentrations, and whether sustained increases in air pollution levels for several days are associated with more pronounced risks of schizophrenia episodes. DESIG

Critical evaluation of human health risks due to hydraulic fracturing in natural gas and petroleum production.

The use of hydraulic fracturing (HF) to extract oil and natural gas has increased, along with intensive discussions on the associated risks to human health. Three technical processes should be differentiated when evaluating human health risks, namely (1) drilling of the borehole, (2) hydraulic stimulation, and (3) gas or oil production. During the drilling phase, emissions such as NOx, NMVOCs (non-methane volatile organic compounds) as precursors for tropospheric ozone formation, and SOx have been shown to be higher compared to the subsequent phases. In relation to hydraulic stimulation, the t

Metabolism and disposition of 1-bromopropane in rats and mice following inhalation or intravenous administration.

Workplace exposure to 1-bromopropane (1-BrP) can potentially occur during its use in spray adhesives, fats, waxes, and resins. 1-BrP may be used to replace ozone depleting solvents, resulting in an increase in its annual production in the US, which currently exceeds 1 million pounds. The potential for human exposure to 1-BrP and the reports of adverse effects associated with potential occupational exposure to high levels of 1-BrP have increased the need for the development of biomarkers of exposure and an improved understanding of 1-BrP metabolism and disposition. In this study, the factors in

Early-Life Air Pollution Exposure Is Associated with the Infant Gut Microbiome and Fecal Metabolome in the First Two Years of Life.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a major public health concern because it increases the risk of numerous diseases, including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Ambient and near-roadway air pollution has been associated with childhood obesity risk, independent of diet and physical activity. However, the biological mechanisms underlying these relationships remain unclear. Based on our previous work and existing literature, we hypothesized that exposure to air pollutants alters the developing infant gut microbiome and fecal metabolome, with implications for childhood obesity risk. In this study,
