The physico-chemical properties of a series of hydantoin derivatives and their intestinal absorption from solution were studied. The introduction of the benzenesulfonyl group at the 1-position of the hydantoin ring greatly affects the physico-chemical properties: the acid dissociation constants were increased 1000-fold and the partition coefficients were increased 100- to 1000-fold in the chloroform/water system and 10- to 100-fold in the n-octanol/water system. Effects of pH and concentrations of Cl and Ca on the uptake of methyl mercury (MeHg) in the gills of the minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) were studied. Chloride concentration and pH in the water affect the speciation of MeHg. Ca was included because it affects the permeability of the gills and could therefore indirectly affect the amount of MeHg accumulated in the tissue. The tendency to crystallize was studied in the selected monohydroxy alcohols: 1-chloro-2-methyl-2-propanol, 1-chloro-2-propanol, 3-chloro-1-propanol, and 8-chloro-1-octanol.
