GILBERT'S SYNDROME - A CONCEALED ADVERSITY FOR PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS.

Gilbert's syndrome (often abbreviated as GS) is most common hereditary cause of mild unconjugated (indirect) hyperbilirubinemia. Various studies have been published depicting clinical and pharmacological effects of Gilbert's syndrome (GS). However GS as a sign of precaution for physician and surgeons has not been clearly established. A systematic study of the available literature was done. Key words of Gilbert's syndrome, hyperbilirubinemia and clinical and pharmacological aspects of GS were searched using PubMed as search engine. Considering the study done in last 40 years, 375 articles were

Elevating the Optical Nonlinearity: Design, Synthesis, and Properties of a Mixed-Ligand Zinc(II) Metal-Organic Framework.

The molecular design of new compounds with enhanced third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) applications is an important research topic in the area of functional materials. The present study describes a new 3D metal-organic framework [Zn3(μ3-bta)2(μ4-ata)2]n (abbreviated as NH2-Zn-MUM-6), generated solvothermally from a multicomponent system composed of zinc(II) ions and 2-aminoterephthalic acid (H2ata) and 1H-benzotriazole (Hbta) as linkers. Apart from an intricate porous structure with a seh-4,6-Imma topology, this MOF features good thermal stability and exceptional NLO characteristics. These we

The limited knowledge of placental damage due to neglected infections: ongoing problems in Latin America.

UNLABELLED: The placenta works as a selective barrier, protecting the fetus from potential infections that may affect the maternal organism during pregnancy. In this review, we will discuss several challenging infections that are common within Latin American countries and that may affect the maternal-fetal interface and pose risks to fetal development. Specifically, we will focus on emerging infectious diseases including the arboviruses, malaria, leishmaniasis, and the bacterial foodborne disease caused by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli. We will also highlight some topics of interest c

Facial soft tissue injuries as an aid to ordering a combination head and facial computed tomography in trauma patients.

PURPOSE: While the trauma computed tomography (CT) head scan is frequently ordered during resuscitation of multiply injured patients, determining when also to order facial CT in these situations can be difficult. Consequently, facial fractures are commonly missed on initial imaging evaluation. In acute trauma situations, facial soft tissue injury markers are often used to aid in this decision. A study was undertaken to identify exactly which facial soft tissue injuries correlate with facial fractures and which did not. The aim of our research was to compare the facial soft tissue injury patter

A double-blind, randomized controlled trial exploring the efficacy of frequency lowering hearing aids in patients with high-frequency hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: Whether linear frequency transposition (LFT) assists individuals with hearing difficulties has been studied for years, but no reliable comparison between LFT hearing aids (HAs) and conventional compression-type HAs has been conducted. Herein, we report on the first, relevant, double-blind, randomized controlled trial on this topic using a large sample size. We compared the efficacies of LFT HAs to those of compression-type HAs in patients with high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL); we also reviewed the literature. METHODS: A total of 103 patients were randomized into three groups: con

Injury and cost comparison of restrained and unrestrained motor vehicle crash victims.

The use of active motor vehicle restraints is a topic of current public and legislative debate. To better define the effects of restraint systems on injury severity, the following study was undertaken. Parametric statistical tests were used for data analyses. For a 6-month period beginning February 1, 1987, all motor vehicle crash victims treated in the emergency unit were entered into the study (n = 613). There were 290 unrestrained subjects (UR), 254 restrained subjects (R), and 69 were excluded because restraint usage information was unobtainable. Unrestrained victims were younger (mean age

Silkworm dropping extract ameliorate trimellitic anhydride-induced allergic contact dermatitis by regulating Th1/Th2 immune response.

UNLABELLED: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is an inflammatory skin disease caused by hapten-specific immune response. Silkworm droppings are known to exert beneficial effects during the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Here, we studied whether topical treatment and oral administration of silkworm dropping extract (SDE) ameliorate trimellitic anhydride (TMA)-induced ACD. In ACD mice model, SDE treatment significantly suppressed the increase in both ear thickness and serum IgE levels. Furthermore, IL-1β and TNF-α levels were reduced by SDE. In allergic responses, SDE treatment significantl

[Long-term results in the treatment of foot injuries in polytraumatized patients].

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcome of multiple injured patients with foot injuries. While severity and frequency of multiple injuries could be decreased in the last years, it was not possible to decrease the severity of injuries of the foot and ankle region. These injuries are often not detected and their severity is underestimated in primarily diagnostics what might lead to complaints in the longterm course. METHODS: The multiple trauma database of the Department of Traumatology of the University of Vienna includes 386 patients from September 1992 to Ap

Racial Disparities at Mixed-Race and Minority Hospitals : Treatment of African American Males With High-Grade Splenic Injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Racial and socioeconomic disparities in health access and outcomes for many conditions is well known. However, for time-sensitive high-acuity diseases such as traumatic injuries, disparities in access and outcomes should be significantly diminished. Our primary objective was to characterize racial disparities across majority, mixed-race, and minority hospitals for African American ([AA] vs White) males with high-grade splenic injuries. METHODS: Data from the National Trauma Data Bank were utilized from 2007 to 2015; 24 855 AA or White males with high-grade splenic injuries were

Topical antibiotic therapy in eye infections - myths and certainties in the era of bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

Globally, the alarming increase in the rate of antibiotic (AB) resistance of bacteria is currently considered one of the 7 major threats to the human race along with terrorism, nuclear proliferation and pollution. Judicious use of AB by physicians in all medical and surgical specialties is essential to limit the extent of resistance to AB. In Europe, Romania ranks among the first in terms of the rate of resistance to AB of the main bacteria involved in eye infections (EI). The principles of a judicious antibiotic therapy in ophthalmology are: performing the bacteriological determinations neces
