A cadaveric anatomical study of the adrenals: Relationship with the posterior abdominal wall muscles revisited.

AIM OF THE STUDY: The main difficulties during retroperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomies are due to its location. Our objective was to define the relationship of the adrenals with the diaphragm and the psoas muscle. METHODS: Our work is an anatomical dissection of 80 fresh cadavers' adrenals. To study the right adrenal, we performed a right nephrectomy and adrenal remained attached to the Inferior vena cava by its main vein. On the left, the edges of the adrenal have been identified by needles and the adrenal was reclined to study its projection on the posterior muscular wall. RESULTS: Th

Respiratory responses to stimulation of abdominal and upper-thorax intercostal muscles using multiple Permaloc electrodes.

Stimulation of abdominal and upper-thoracic muscles was studied with the long-term goal of improved respiratory care for spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. A 12-channel stimulator and multiple surface and implanted Permaloc electrodes were evaluated in five anesthetized canines. Abdominal stimulation with 100 mA using four bilateral sets of surface electrodes placed on the midaxillary line at the 7th through 13th intercostal spaces and with a closed airway at a large lung volume produced an expiratory tracheal pressure of 109 +/- 29 cm H2O (n = 2, mean +/- standard error of the mean). Change in onset times of the abdominal muscles following functional task in lumbar spinal stenosis.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in the onset times of the abdominal muscle following a rapid arm task in lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). In total, 32 patients with LSS were recruited from W oriental hospital. Muscle activity onset of the internal oblique (IO) and external oblique (EO) muscles was measured by electromyography (EMG) activity with a rapid arm movement and during the performance of a walking task. The LSS group demonstrated a significantly later onset of the IO, EO, and rectus abdominal (RA) muscles than the normal group. The deltoid reaction time of the

Intra-abdominal pressure and trunk muscle activity during lifting. III. Effect of abdominal muscle training in chronic low-back patients.

Isometric training of the abdominal muscles is often recommended in programs of primary or secondary prevention for low-back pain. In this study 20 male workers with 2-18 years' history (average 5 1/2 years) of low-back pain without sciatica went through intense isometric abdominal muscle training for 5 weeks. Before and after training the subjects had trunk flexion and extension strength tests and a series of standardized lifts. The intraabdominal pressure (IAP) and the EMG activity of the oblique abdominal muscles, and of the erector spinae muscle were recorded. It was found that: the streng

The development of thoracic and abdominal muscle depends on SDF1 and CXCR4.

In vertebrates, the lateral body wall muscle formation is thought to be initiated by direct outgrowth of the dermomyotomes resulting in the elongation of the hypaxial myotomes. This contrasts with the formation of the muscles of the girdle, limbs and intrinsic tongue muscles, which originate from long-range migrating progenitors. Previous work shows that the migration of these progenitors requires CXCR4 which is specifically expressed in the migrating cells, but not in the dermomyotome. Here, we show that cells in the ventrolateral-lip (VLL) of the dermomyotome at the flank level express CXCR4

Abdominal muscle flap repair for large defects of the diaphragm.

Repair of a large diaphragmatic defect in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) and eventration of the diaphragm (DE) is difficult, especially when this is an unexpected finding at surgery. A patch of synthetic material may not be available at short notice, especially in developing countries. We describe the repair of nine such defects by using an abdominal muscle flap comprising the transversus abdominis and internal oblique muscles based on the intercostal and subcostal vessels. Although reports of similar flap repairs have been published in the literature [1-5], these employed a subcostal i

Abdominal muscle length during respiratory defensive reflexes.

The purpose of the present study was to assess the mechanical behavior of an expiratory muscle during defensive reflexes. Transversus abdominis muscle length changes were measured using sonomicrometry in anesthetized dogs. The abdominal muscle lengthened during the inspiratory phase and shortened at a rapid velocity during the expiratory portion of coughs and sneezes. The mean extent of muscle shortening was not different during coughing compared to breathing (P greater than 0.20) but was approximately double in magnitude during sneezing compared to breathing (P less than 0.005). On the other

Abdominal Aortic Calcification Is Associated With Degeneration of The Paraspinal Muscles: A Retrospective Cross-sectional Study.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship of abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) and a reduction in the cross-sectional area (CSA) and the fatty infiltration (FI) of the paravertebral muscles in patients undergoing lumbar fusion surgery. BACKGROUND: Both AAC and paraspinal muscle degeneration have been shown to be associated with poorer outcomes after surgical treatment of degenerative diseases of the lumbar spine. However, there is a lack of data on the association between AAC and paraspinal muscle changes in patients undergo

Disseminated soft tissue diffuse large B-cell lymphoma involving multiple abdominal wall muscles: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and patients with DLBCL typically present rapidly growing masses. Lymphoma involving muscle is rare and accounts for only 5%; furthermore, multiple muscles and soft tissue involvement of DLBCL is unusual. Due to unusual clinical manifestation, accurate diagnosis could be delayed. CASE SUMMARY: A 61-year-old man complained of swelling, pain and erythematous changes in the lower abdomen. Initially, soft tissue infection was suspected, however, skin lesion did not respond to antibiotics. 18Fluor

Pelvic floor muscle contraction and abdominal hollowing during walking can selectively activate local trunk stabilizing muscles.

BACKGROUND: Trunk muscle exercises are widely performed, and many studies have been performed to examine their effects on low back pains. However, the effect of trunk muscles activations during walking with pelvic floor muscle contraction (PFMC) and abdominal hollowing (AH) has not been clarified. OBJECT: To investigate whether walking with PFMC and AH is more effective for promoting local trunk muscle activation than walking without PFMC and AH. METHODS: Twenty healthy men (28.9 ± 3.14 years, 177.2 ± 4.25 cm, 72.1 ± 6.39 kg, body mass index 22.78 ± 2.38 kg/m2) were participated in this stud

The muscles of the infrapubic abdominal wall of a 6-month-old Crocodylus niloticus (Reptilia: Crocodylia).

The muscles of the infrapubic abdominal wall of crocodilians play an important role in their ventilatory mechanism. Yet the anatomy and homology of these muscles is poorly understood. To gain new insights into the anatomy of the crocodilian infrapubic abdominal wall, we dissected a specimen of Crocodylus niloticus. Origin and insertion of the muscles, as well as their arrangement relative to each other was examined in great detail. The findings were compared with those of other crocodilian taxa to detect potential variability of the muscles of interest. The homology of the muscles was studied

Ultrasonography of abdominal muscles: Differential diagnosis of late-onset Pompe disease and myotonic dystrophy type 1.

INTRODUCTION: Axial muscles are involved earlier and to a greater extent in late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD) than in myotonic muscular dystrophy type 1 (DM1). We aimed to evaluate abdominal muscles in LOPD compared in DM1 using muscle ultrasonography. METHODS: Patients with LOPD (n = 3), DM1 (n = 10), and age- and gender-matched healthy subjects (n = 34) were enrolled for muscle ultrasonography. Patients with LOPD and DM1 were 20 to 59 years of age with a disease duration ranging between 7 and 30 years. A multifrequency linear transducer was used to evaluate quality and thickness in the abdomi

The development of adult abdominal muscles in Drosophila: myoblasts express twist and are associated with nerves.

During metamorphosis, the adult muscles of the Drosophila abdomen develop from pools of myoblasts that are present in the larva. The adult myoblasts express twist in the third larval instar and the early pupa and are closely associated with nerves. Growing adult nerves and the twist-expressing cells migrate out across the developing abdominal epidermis, and as twist expression declines, the myoblasts begin to synthesize beta 3 tubulin. There follows a process involving cell fusion and segregation into cell groups to form multinucleate muscle precursors. These bipolar precursors migrate at both
