We report the case of an infant born after parvovirus B19-induced fetal hydrops, who presented at birth with bilateral abdominal wall laxity, which was more evident on the flanks. Imaging exams revealed congenital hypoplasia of oblique abdominal muscles not associated with other anatomical abnormalities except for small liver calcifications. We review the medical literature and identify similar cases associated with fetal ascites. We propose that isolated hypoplasia of abdominal wall muscles can be associated with fetal ascites from various causes, and represents a separate condition from prun

Although ascites causes abdominal expansion, its effects on abdominal muscle function are uncertain. In the present study, progressively increasing ascites was induced in supine anesthetized dogs, and the changes in abdominal (DeltaPab) and airway opening (DeltaPao) pressure obtained during stimulation of the internal oblique and transversus abdominis muscles were measured; the changes in internal oblique muscle length were also measured. As ascites increased from 0 to 100 ml/kg body wt, Pab and muscle length during relaxation increased. DeltaPab also showed a threefold increase (P < 0.001). H

OBJECTIVES: Lumbopelvic pain (LPP) is a very common cause of discomfort during pregnancy, but its etiology remains unclear. The association between abdominal muscle thickness and LPP in pregnant women has not been studied extensively, despite the significant abdominal changes that occur during pregnancy. This study aimed to examine the relationship between abdominal muscle thickness and LPP in pregnant women.
METHODS: In this study, 49 pregnant women in their second trimester participated. The intensity of LPP was assessed using a numerical rating scale. Ultrasound imaging was used to measure

PURPOSE: Abdominal wall laxity is typically associated with prune-belly syndrome (PBS). Incomplete forms of PBS have been rarely reported with only the abdominal wall laxity. Herein, we describe a rare congenital abdominal wall defect that has been confused with PBS and illustrate the laparoscopic-assisted surgical technique used for reconstruction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two boys with symmetrical, bilateral absence or hypoplasia of the internal and external oblique muscles and no genitourinary abnormalities underwent a laparoscopic-assisted abdominal wall reconstruction utilizing the techniq

PURPOSE: In microgravity, muscle atrophy occurs in the intrinsic muscles of the spine, with changes also observed in the abdominal muscles. Exercises are undertaken on the International Space Station and on Earth following space flight to remediate these effects. Similar effects have been seen on Earth in prolonged bed rest studies and in people with low back pain (LBP). The aim of this case report was to examine the effects of microgravity, exercise in microgravity and post-flight rehabilitation on the size of the multifidus and antero-lateral abdominal muscles.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal strengthening exercises are important for stroke patients; however, there is a lack of research on therapeutic exercises for increasing abdominal muscle activity in stroke patients.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effects of non-paretic arm exercises using a tubing band on abdominal muscle activity in stroke patients.
METHODS: In total, 18 hemiplegic subjects (13 males, 5 females) were recruited. All subjects performed non-paretic arm exercises involving three different shoulder movements (extension, flexion, and horizontal abduction) using an elastic tubing band. Surfac

Abdominal surgery has a marked inhibitory influence on the diaphragm, but its effect on the expiratory muscles is not known. Therefore, we have recorded the electromyograms of the triangularis sterni, abdominal external oblique, and transversus abdominis before and after a midline laparotomy in 10 anesthetized, spontaneously breathing dogs. Measurements were obtained during quiet breathing in the supine posture, during breathing against expiratory threshold loads, during head-up tilting, and during hyperoxic hypercapnia. Expiratory activation of the transversus abdominis in all conditions was

Background and Objectives: Rugby players engage in demanding, high loading muscular activity in the spine. Study of the abdominal wall architecture in female rugby athletes is relevant to the possible muscular asymmetry secondary to sport practice and the relationship between the abdominal wall and the pelvic floor muscles. Activation of the transversus abdominis (TrAb) generates an increase in the bladder neck muscle. Moreover, an increased interrecti distance (IRD) is related to urinary incontinence and has a higher prevalence in athletic women. The aim of the present study was to compare an

A new access to extrahepatic bile ducts is proposed which keeps the lateral abdominal muscles and intercostal vascular-nervous plexuses intact. The spatial conditions of the access were studied experimentally in 108 corpses. The clinical assessment was tested in 102 operations in comparison with the Kocher access. The oblique-transversal access was found to have advantages from the clinico-physiological viewpoint as well (the development of the postoperative period, restoration of the external respiration function and the function of the abdominal wall muscles).

[Purpose] While forced exhalation with balloon-blowing has been reported to facilitate abdominal muscle activity, few studies have examined its effects using imaging. We aimed to compare abdominal muscle morphology across three conditions, end-inspiration, end-forced expiration, and end-forced expiration with balloon-blowing, between a balloon-blowing exercise expert and a novice with chronic low back pain, assessed using ultrasound imaging. [Participants and Methods] A 61-year-old male expert and a 51-year-old male novice participated. The thicknesses of the transversus abdominis, internal ob

The use of an external oblique muscle-cutaneous flap in the reconstruction of large chest wall defects after mastectomy is described. The flap is drown as a V-Y advancement-rotation flap, laterally based, on the ipsilateral abdominal wall. The flap extends from the posterior axillary line to the linea alba, vascular supply is provided by the musculo-cutaneous perforating arteries of the intercostal vessels. Mobilization starts medially including the anterior rectus sheath, décollement continues between the external and the internal oblique muscles as far as the posterior axillary line. The abd

Patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) do not use the sternocleidomastoid muscles when breathing at rest, but have a greater than normal neural drive to the rib-cage inspiratory muscles, the abdominal muscles, and the diaphragm. Yet the increased activation of the abdominal muscles and diaphragm in such patients has only limited mechanical effects, and this has led to the suggestion that the overall increase in neural drive is simply an automatic response of the respiratory system to a greater than resting stimulation. To test this hypothesis, we examined the pattern

A new extended external oblique musculocutaneous flap utilized in the reconstruction of chest-wall defects is described. The flap is drawn as a V-Y rotation flap on the ipsilateral abdominal wall. It is laterally based, and its pedicle coincides with the five lowest costal insertions of the external oblique. The flap extends above the transiliac line, from the posterior axillary line to the linea alba, and includes the dynamic territory of the external oblique muscle. Vascular supply is provided by the musculocutaneous perforating arteries of the intercostal vessels and their subcutaneous bran

Cross-correlation of neural discharges was used to investigate the connections between expiratory bulbospinal neurons (EBSNs) in the caudal medulla and expiratory motoneurons innervating thoracic and abdominal muscles in anesthetized cats. Peaks were seen in the cross-correlation histograms for around half of the EBSN-nerve pairs for the following: at T8, the nerve branches innervating internal intercostal muscle and external abdominal oblique muscle and a more distal branch of the internal intercostal nerve; and at L1, a nerve branch innervating internal abdominal oblique muscle and a more di

BACKGROUND: Core training is the foundation of physical exercise. The activation of the lateral abdominal wall (LAW) muscles in the core muscles, particularly the transversus abdominal (TrA) muscles, has a stabilizing effect on the chest and abdomen. Therefore, we need to focus on the training effect of the TrA. There are many ways to measure the LAW. Ultrasound can assess the effect of training in real time and intuitively. Therefore, we intend to evaluate the activation of the LAW in different types of core training using ultrasound, to determine the best movements that can activate the TrA

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal hernias with large fascial defects are very difficult to repair, and it is almost impossible to achieve midline closure without causing abdominal compartment syndrome or intra-abdominal hypertension. Preoperative botulinum toxin A (BTA) infiltration into the lateral abdominal wall muscles has been shown to facilitate fascial closure in such cases.
METHODS: This prospective interventional study was conducted from October 2023 to April 2025 in adult patients aged ≥ 18 years with large midline abdominal wall hernias with a defect width of more than 10 cm. Preoperative com
