We present three cases of Absidia corymbifera necrotising fasciitis presenting to our centre within 1 month of each other. All patients had wound dressings with non sterile crepe bandages at peripheral centres. One patient was lost to follow-up, another improved on timely antifungal therapy, while the last patient succumbed to disseminated infection. We propose that traumatic and deep wounds be dressed with sterile roller bandages to prevent outbreaks of wound zygomycosis.

Absidia corymbifera infection in a healthy individual is rare. Most of the infection occurs in immunocompromised patients or diabetic patients. Cutaneous and subcutaneous mucormycosis have been increasingly reported in the literature as a result of massive trauma with contaminated wounds. We present a case of cutaneous mucormycosis in a healthy, young patient after surgical amputation for a crush injury of the leg. We also highlight the importance of the high index of clinical suspicion in the diagnosis and treatment of this fungal infection in the hype of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus

Zygomycosis is a rare fungal disease that occurs in compromised human hosts, including the preterm infant. The three clinical forms of zygomycosis are cellulitis, disseminated, and gastrointestinal, and the last often mimics necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), complicating the diagnosis. This report details a case of primary gastrointestinal zygomycosis due to Absidia corymbifera, mimicking NEC, in a preterm infant, and emphasizes features that may lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment of future cases.

Mucormycosis (zygomycosis) normally occurs among individuals with predisposing factors such as prematurity, use of broad spectrum antibiotics, metabolic acidosis or advanced stages of immunosuppression. There have been reports of sporadic cases of cutaneous mucormycosis related to predisposing skin lesions and contact with contaminated material such as adhesive bandages and tongue depressors placed close to intravenous catheter insertion sites. We report successful treatment of a case of Absidia corymbifera infection with the combination of amphotericin B and surgical debridement of the affect

Absidia corymbifera is a rare cause of pulmonary tract infection. There exist only 5 case reports predominantly diagnosed in bone marrow transplant patients. Lung transplant patients are at high risk for invasive fungal infections. Due to A. corymbifera as pathogen, known to be voriconazole resistant, a fatal invasive pulmonary mycosis occurred. In the present case voriconazole prophylaxis failed. A second patient showed a transient colonization of the bronchi. To prevent airborne transmitted invasive pulmonary mycosis in the first postoperative period of lung transplantation the patient shoul

BACKGROUND: We report a case of mucormycosis in a healthy 17-year-old accident victim with multiple abdominal injuries which was caused by infection with Absidia Corymbifera, a ubiquitous saphrophyte in the ground.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was admitted to hospital with massive abdominal trauma. During an 8-hour emergency operation he received transfusions of compacted red blood cells, plasma, platelets and hemagel. He developed a crush syndrome with acute renal failure, resolved with extra-corporeal dialysis and had to undergo splenectomy because of spleen hematoma. As wound secretion a

A slowly enlarging arm ulcer appeared in a 61-year-old man with cutaneous T cell lymphoma. Skin biopsy revealed aseptate hyphae and nodular small/medium-sized pleomorphic CD4(+) T cell infiltration. Cultures yielded Absidia corymbifera which was identified by phenotypic and molecular methods. Since a thorough examination did not detect organ involvement, the patient was diagnosed as having primary cutaneous zygomycosis. This is the first case report of cutaneous zygomycosis caused by A. corymbifera in a patient with primary cutaneous CD4(+) small/medium-sized pleomorphic T-cell lymphoma. Other

Chitin assay was used to measure Absidia ramosa infection in the brain and kidneys of cortisone-treated mice. Mice dying 3 days after challenge had brain and kidney infection but normal renal function as determined by measurement of blood urea levels. Mice dying 5 or 6 days after challenge had infection in the kidneys but not the brain and were uraemic.

AIM: To present a case of orbital fungal infection caused by a rare fungus, Lichtheimia corymbifera (Absidia corymbifera) in an immunocompetent individual.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective case study.
RESULT: A 23-year-old male presented with painful proptosis of the right eye for 3 months. Examination revealed normal vision and pupillary light reflex but restricted ocular movements in the right eye. A tender, firm mass was palpable along the inferomedial quadrant of the right orbit. He had acute worsening of proptosis with loss of light perception within 24 hours. Magnetic resonance i

BACKGROUND: Lichtheimia corymbifera (previously Absidia corymbifera) is a filamentous zygomycetes belonging to the order Mucorales and to the family Lichtheimiaceae. Members of genus Lichtheimia spp. are cosmopolitan and ubiquitous in nature. Lichtheimia corymbifera is a recognized agent of diseases in man and animals. In cattle it causes abortion and mastitis. Three cases of bovine abortion occurred in a herd located in the Po Valley. Serological examinations were performed on fetal and mother's blood. One of the aborted fetus was referred to our laboratory. The paper describes the isolation

Primary ciliary dyskinesia is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that impairs mucociliary clearance and predisposes children to chronic respiratory infections. Invasive fungal infections caused by Lichtheimia (Absidia) corymbifera are typically confined to profoundly immunocompromised hosts and are exceptionally uncommon in patients without systemic immunosuppression. We report the case of a 6-year-old boy with genetically confirmed primary ciliary dyskinesia (C3orf67 mutation) and right-middle-lobe bronchiectasis who developed persistent cough and increased sputum production. High-resolution

Absidiosis was produced experimentally in 18 buffalo calves by intravenous inoculation of spores of Absidia corymbifera. Infected animals exhibited dullness, depression, partial anorexia and an initial pyrexia and coughing during the first week and two animals died on each of 9, 13 and 16 days post infection (DPI). The haemoglobin concentration and total erythrocyte count showed no appreciable change from their basal values at any stage of the experiment. However, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate and total leukocyte count increased significantly in the infected animals. The differential leuk

Absidia sp. is a rare etiologic agent responsible for infectious complications in immunosuppressed patients. The authors describe a 4-year-old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukemia complicated with pleuropneumonia caused by an Absidia infection during the induction of remission. A review of the published reports in current literature is included for comparison. To the authors' knowledge only six cases of primary pulmonary absidiomycosis have been published. Despite its uncommon pulmonary presentation, mucormycosis should be considered in patients with an immunosuppressing illness and positive

Thirty-eight isolates (including 28 isolates from patients) morphologically identified as Lichtheimia corymbifera (formerly Absidia corymbifera) were studied by sequence analysis (analysis of the internal transcribed spacer [ITS] region of the ribosomal DNA, the D1-D2 region of 28S, and a portion of the elongation factor 1alpha [EF-1alpha] gene). Phenotypic characteristics, including morphology, antifungal susceptibility, and carbohydrate assimilation, were also determined. Analysis of the three loci uncovered two well-delimited clades. The maximum sequence similarity values between isolates f

Absidia glauca and Parasitella parasitica constitute a versatile experimental system for studying horizontal gene transfer between a mucoralean host and its fusion parasite. The A. glauca chondriome has a length of approximately 63 kb and a GC content of 28%. The chondriome of P. parasitica is larger, 83 kb, and contains 31% GC base pairs. These mtDNAs contain the standard fungal mitochondrial gene set, small and large subunit rRNAs, plus ribonuclease P RNA. Comparing zygomycete chondriomes reveals an unusually high number of homing endonuclease genes in P. parasitica, substantiating the mobil

Recently, we and others reported the discovery of Lichtheimia ramosa (syn. Lichtheimia hongkongensis). We also hypothesized that a proportion of 'Absidia corymbifera (Lichtheimia corymbifera)' reported in the literature could be L. ramosa. In this study, we characterized 13 strains that had been reported as 'A. corymbifera (L. corymbifera)' in the literature over an 11-year period. Microscopic examination of agar block smear preparations of all 13 strains showed abundant circinate side branches and pleomorphic giant cells with finger-like projections of L. ramosa. Mucormycoses are rare but emerging diseases with poor prognosis caused by ubiquitous fungi from the environment. In November 2008, our teaching hospital experienced three cutaneous mucormycosis due to Lichtheimia spp. (ex Absidia/Mycocladus) in the intensive care and orthopaedic units. Environmental and epidemiological investigations suggested a possible cross-transmission of L. ramosa between two patients in intensive care. This is the first report of possible person-to-person transmission of mucormycosis species. These cases show the ineffectiveness of hydro-alcoholic solutions against spore
