Positivity bias in academic future expectations: Evidence from production and recall tasks in first-year university students.

Individuals tend to process positive information more preferentially than negative information, a phenomenon known as positivity bias. This study examined the presence of this bias in academic expectations among first-year university students. Participants generated academic expectations in response to positive (e.g., achieve, collaborate) and negative (e.g., quit, lose) cues and rated the emotional intensity of these expectations. After completing several distractor tasks, they were asked to recall the generated expectations freely, and finally completed measures of academic satisfaction, sel

The role of ADHD in academic adversity: disentangling ADHD effects from other personal and contextual factors.

Students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience significant academic difficulties that can lead to numerous negative academic consequences. With a focus on adverse academic outcomes, this study seeks to disentangle variance attributable to ADHD from variance attributable to salient personal and contextual covariates. Responses from 136 students with ADHD and 3,779 non-ADHD peers from 9 high schools were analyzed using logistic regression. Dependent measures included academic failure, grade repetition, school refusal, changing classes and school, school exclusion, and s

Capturing learning persistence through fractional dynamic modeling: evidence from secondary school students.

BACKGROUND: Student academic performance develops through cumulative learning experiences, yet conventional educational performance models generally assume that Educational support and learning behavior variables produce immediate effects. This study proposes a fractional dynamic framework to capture the persistence of learning and examine associations between educational support, learning behavior, and academic performance. METHODS: We analyzed micro-level data from 649 Portuguese secondary school students using a fractional-order educational performance model that incorporated educational m

Predictors of Crossing Failure in Femoropopliteal Lesions: The Importance of Length of the Lesion and Calcification.

BACKGROUND: Endovascular therapy is nowadays the first choice for most patients with peripheral artery disease. The most important cause of technical failure is failure to cross the lesion with a wire. In this retrospective study, we explore possible risk factors of crossing failure. METHODS: We included all consecutive patients in whom the lesion could not be crossed in the period of the January 1, 2017-January 1, 2022. The lesions of these patients were compared with patients in whom the lesion could be crossed (2:1). The following potential anatomical risk factors were compared: location o

Childhood and adolescent hyperactivity-inattention symptoms and academic achievement 8 years later: the GAZEL Youth study.

BACKGROUND: Children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at risk of negative academic outcomes. However, relatively few studies in this area have been based on long-term longitudinal designs and community-based settings. This study examined the link between childhood hyperactivity-inattention symptoms (HI-s) and subsequent academic achievement in a community setting, controlling for other behavioural symptoms, socio-economic status (SES) and environmental factors at baseline. METHOD: The sample consisted of 1264 subjects (aged 12 to 26 years at follow-up) recruited from t

Risk Adjustment in the California Joint Replacement Registry: Is Patient Complexity Accurately Assessed in Academic Versus Nonacademic Hospitals?

BACKGROUND: We sought to report on the differences in observed versus expected arthroplasty outcomes between academic and nonacademic hospitals in a large joint registry. We utilized the California Joint Replacement Registry's data and risk adjustment model. METHODS: Observed versus expected hip and knee arthroplasty complications were utilized to assess hospital and surgeon risk-adjusted complication rates (RACRs). Based on a hospital and surgeon RACR, each was assigned a performance rating ("worse," "expected," "better"). Associations between academic status and performance ratings, rates o

The strategies adopted by Dutch children with dyslexia to maintain their self-esteem when teased at school.

This article reports on a study of children's narratives about the relationships between dyslexia and being teased at school and explores the dynamics between dyslexia, being bullied, self-esteem, and psychosocial problems. We reconstructed four profiles of inner logic in the children's reactions to being teased or humiliated as a consequence of their dyslexia. Most children with dyslexia protect themselves against teasing and feeling worthless by concealing both their emotions and their academic failures. Others, however, concentrate on their academic progress, and their self-esteem seems to

Gender and grade-level comparisons in the structure of problem behaviors among adolescents.

Based on Jessor's theory (1987) the comparability of a second-order problem behavior model (SPBM) was investigated across gender and grade-level among adolescents. In addition, gender and grade-level differences in problem behavior engagement were addressed examining latent mean differences. Using a sample of 6504 adolescents drawn from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, a series of invariance tests evidenced partial invariance. The non-invariance of SPBM resulted from aggression across gender and grade-level. Latent mean difference test results showed greater differences in

Medical school selection: impact of dysfunctional tendencies on academic performance.

PURPOSE: Dysfunctional personality characteristics have a negative impact on the learning process, academic motivation, academic grades and course attendance. They are associated with higher levels of anxiety and negative mood before examinations, a lack of self-confidence and fear of failure, social skills deficits, and personal and social relationship problems. Dysfunctional personality characteristics inhibit interpersonal working relationships and are detrimental to team effectiveness. Previous research revealed that the majority of students selected into an Australian undergraduate medica

Neuropsychological findings in childhood narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy with cataplexy is a severely disabling disorder very often arising in childhood. Data on neuropsychological impairment in children are scant. We administered standardized neuropsychological tests to 13 children with narcolepsy with cataplexy. Overall, our patients displayed multiple patterns of cognitive and behavioral dysfunction, and often academic failure (7 cases out of 13). All children had a normal full intelligence quotient (IQ), but 3 patients presented a significantly higher and 2 a significantly lower Verbal IQ compared to Performance IQ, respectively. Mean sleep latency w

The repeated exam failure might affect further underachievement of MD students, especially first-year females - the single-centre observation based on selected yearlong courses.

BACKGROUND: In order to address the uneven academic performance of MD students, the study focused on the potential association between the results of midterm assessment and students’ further underachievement. The authors addressed two research questions: (1) If a student fails the first attempt of the midterm test, can this result be considered as a risk factor of failing the first attempt of final exam as well?; (2) Is there a long-term effect of exam failure experience on academic performance on the third year of the curriculum? METHODS: The retrospective cohort study involved anonymized MD
