Academic performance and musculoskeletal pain in adolescents with uncorrected vision problems.

BACKGROUND: Undetected vision problems are common in school children, and a prevalence of up to 40% has previously been reported. Uncorrected vision and lack of optimal eye wear can have a significant impact on almost all aspects of everyday life, such as development and learning, academic performance, pain and discomfort, and quality of life. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between uncorrected vision problems, educational outcomes, and musculoskeletal pain symptoms. METHODS: A total of 152 school children (15.1 ± 0.8 years, mean ± SD; 40% males) were included in the study. All p

Social determinants of neurocognitive and academic performance in sickle cell disease.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is associated with poor neurocognitive outcomes due to biomedical and psychosocial factors. The aims of this study were to investigate associations between household and neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) with cognitive and academic outcomes in SCD and to determine if these relationships were modified by sickle genotype, fetal hemoglobin, or age. PROCEDURE: We prospectively recruited patients to complete a battery of neurocognitive and academic measures. Household SES was measured using the Barratt Simplified Measure of Social Status, a composite ind

Does emotional intelligence at medical school admission predict future academic performance?

PURPOSE: Medical school admissions committees are increasingly considering noncognitive measures like emotional intelligence (EI) in evaluating potential applicants. This study explored whether scores on an EI abilities test at admissions predicted future academic performance in medical school to determine whether EI could be used in making admissions decisions. METHOD: The authors invited all University of Ottawa medical school applicants offered an interview in 2006 and 2007 to complete the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso EI Test (MSCEIT) at the time of their interview (105 and 101, respectively), the

Associations among text messaging, academic performance, and sexual behaviors of adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Text messaging is an increasingly common mode of communication, especially among adolescents, and frequency of texting may be a measure of one's sociability. This study examined how text messaging ("texting") frequency and academic performance are associated with adolescent sexual behaviors. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was administered to students at a public charter high school in Los Angeles County, CA. Two hundred fifty-six high school students aged 14-20 years participated. Outcome measures were history of vaginal sex, condom use, and worries about pregnancy. The main pr

Academic performance and behavioral difficulties after neonatal and infant heart surgery.

Although advances in medical and surgical arenas have allowed the ability to "mend" children born with congenital heart disease, the increasing number of survivors has created a growing cohort of children with potential academic difficulties. This article reviews the current understanding of the midterm neurologic outcomes of children who underwent neonatal and infant cardiac surgery. Lesions including transposition of great arteries, tetralogy of Fallot, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, and single ventricle lesions requiring Fontan palliation or ca

Motivation to Learn Neuroanatomy by Cadaveric Dissection is Correlated with Academic Performance.

Implementing educational activities, such as a wet lab with cadaveric brain dissection, is known to have a direct impact on medical students' motivation. These activities demonstrate the clinical relevance of concepts taught in the classroom setting. The correlation between motivation and academic performance is not clear. First year medical students participated in wet lab activities. The wet lab included cadaveric dissection of the surface and internal anatomy of the brain, as well as discussions facilitated by the neuroscience faculty and clinicians. Discussions were centered around the cli

The impact of psychopathology on academic performance in school-age children and adolescents.

Psychiatric symptoms have consistently been associated with negative educational outcomes. However, possible confounding variables, such as comorbid mental and environmental conditions, have not been well addressed. This study examined whether mental health problems were significantly linked to academic performance in a Spanish school-based sample, after adjustment for co-occurring psychiatric symptoms and multiple contextual factors. Parents completed a questionnaire regarding child's sociodemographic characteristics (i.e., gender, age, type of school, socioeconomic status, ethnicity), stress

Longitudinal associations between problematic TikTok use and academic performance among Chinese college students: mediation by academic burnout and disordered eating.

PURPOSE: Although problematic TikTok use (PTTU) and disordered eating have each been linked to poorer academic outcomes, few studies have examined their interplay-particularly the distinct roles of thinness- versus muscularity-oriented eating-and the contribution of academic burnout. This study tested whether baseline PTTU prospectively predicted subsequent-semester GPA through parallel and sequential pathways involving academic burnout and both eating-pathology orientations among Chinese undergraduates. METHODS: TikTok-using students from three Chinese universities (N = 475; Mage = 19.34, SD
