The present paper comprises a systematic survey of trematodes and acanthocephalans based on helminthological examinations of 64 specimens of 14 species of freshwater fishes, belonging to six families of four fish orders, mostly from localities in Hubei Province, central China, collected in the autumn of 2002. A total of 15 trematode species (in 12 families) and 5 acanthocephalan species (in four families) was recorded. Almost all parasites are briefly described and illustrated and problems concerning their morphology, taxonomy, hosts and geographical distribution are discussed. Some findings r

The acanthocephalan Macracanthorhynchus ingens (von Linstow 1879) (Acanthocephala: Archiacanthocephala) is a parasite that infects the gut of carnivores (racoons, coyotes, wolves, foxes, badgers, skunks, opossum, mink and bears) as an adult and the body cavity of lizards, snakes, and frogs as a cystacanth in the Americas. In this study, adults and cystacanths of M. ingens from southeastern Mexico and southern Florida, USA, were identified morphologically by having a cylindrical proboscis armed with 6 rows of hooks each with 6 hooks. Hologenophores were used to sequence the small (SSU) and larg

This study investigated the population dynamics and reproductive biology of the acanthocephalan Octospiniferoides incognita in the intestine of the herbivorous fish Rhytiodus microlepis throughout the seasonal water level fluctuations of a floodplain lake in Amazonas State, Brazil. Between July 2022 and November 2023, hosts were sampled during the rising water, high water, receding water, and low water phases. The results show that the water level fluctuations significantly influence infection levels. Prevalence was 73% during rising water, reached 100% during high water, and remained high dur

Centrorhynchus globocaudatus (Zeder, 1800) Lühe, 1911 (Centrorhynchidae) was reported in birds of prey. Our population from Falco tinnunculus Linnaeus (Falconidae) and Buteo buteo Linnaeus (Accipitridae) in northern Italy was morphologically distinct from others described elsewhere. The worms are elongate and cylindrical. Proboscis long, apically truncated and bare, with wider base and variably faint constriction at point of attachment of receptacle. Large anterior hooks well rooted; posterior spiniform hooks with reduced roots; transitional hooks with scutiform roots in-between. Four tubular

BACKGROUND: Acanthocephalans (thorny headed worms) of the genus Pseudoacanthocephalus mainly parasitize amphibians and reptiles across the globe. Some species of the genus Pseudoacanthocephalus also can accidentally infect human and cause human acanthocephaliasis. Current knowledge of the species composition of the genus Pseudoacanthocephalus from amphibians and reptiles in China is incomplete. An insufficiency of genetic data on species of the genus Pseudoacanthocephalus, including the complete mitochondrial genomes, has limited the use of molecular-based methods to better define the taxonomy

Fully developed, sexually mature small male and female acanthocephalans, Microsentis wardae Martin & Multani, 1966 (Neoechinorhynchidae) reaching only 2.25 mm and 2.42 mm, respectively, were collected from the rectum of longjaw mudsuckers, Gillichthys mirabilis Cooper, in the salty marches of Anaheim Bay and San Diego Bay, California. Our specimens were half the size of those reported in the original description from the same host in Scammon's Lagoon over 700 km to the south. The ratio of proboscis and receptacle size to trunk size was markedly higher in our specimens compared to the larger sp

The study describes the morphological changes associated with parasitism by the intestinal acanthocephalan Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae in tambaqui juveniles Colossoma macropomum farmed in an excavated nursery, in Manaus (Amazon) in September 2013. After fish biometrics, analysis of macroscopic changes in morphology and counting of parasites, bowel fragments were fixed and submitted to histological and histochemical processing. All fish analyzed had acanthocephalans in the intestine; intestinal loops were milky white in color, with the presence of nodules with heavy parasitism. The changes in t

A new acanthocepohalan species, Moniliformis saudi sp. n. is described from the desert hedgehog, Paraechinus aethiopicus (Ehrenberg), in central Saudi Arabia. Fourteen other valid species of Moniliformis Travassos, 1915 are recognised. The new species of Moniliformis is distinguished by having a small proboscis (315-520 µm long and 130-208 µm wide) with two apical pores, 14 rows of 8 hooks each and small hooks, thre largest being 25-31 µm long anteriorly. Distinguishing features are incorporated in a dichotomous key to the species of Moniliformis. The description is augmented by scanning elect

A new species of Centrorhynchus (Centrorhynchidae) with receptacle insertion at the posterior third of the proboscis is described from the pheasant crow Centropus sinensis (Stephens) (Cuculidae) in Pakistan. Centrorhynchu sglobirostris n. sp. is similar to the 98 other known species of Centrorhynchus Lühe, 1911 in having long cylindrical trunk with anterior dilation and transverse anastomoses of the secondary lacunar vessels. However, specimens of C. globirostris differ from all other species of the genus by having a unique globular proboscis not divided into anterior proboscis with rooted hoo

The study of many acanthocephalans of the genus Metacanthocephalus Yamaguti, 1959 (Leptorhynchoididae) from the black rockcod Notothenia coriiceps Richardson in the Argentine Islands revealed their close affiliation to Metacanthocephalus rennicki (Leiper and Atkinson, 1914, 1915). Metacanthocephalus rennicki was originally described from the emerald rockcod Trematomus bernacchii Boulenger in Cape Evans, Ross's Sea, McMurdo Sound, and is herein split into two subspecies in two different primary fish host species and separate geographical locations. These specimens are herein described as Metaca

The morphology of cystacanths and adults of Profilicollis altmani (Perry, 1942) Van Cleave, 1947 (Polymorphidae) were studied from the Pacific mole crab Emerita analoga (Stimpson) (Crustacea, Hippidae) and Belcher's gull Larus belcheri (Vigors) (Aves, Laridae), respectively, in Peru. Comparative morphometrics with accounts of other populations of P. altmani from elsewhere off the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of North and South America revealed marked intraspecific population variations. We report scanning electron micrographs (SEM) of new features, not before noted or captured in line drawings

Acanthocephala are known as thorny-headed worms and are common parasites in animals, but acanthocephaliasis in humans is rare, with limited medical literature available. Infections are acquired via direct ingestion of arthropod intermediate hosts. In this case report, a female toddler is evaluated for passage of a pseudosegmented worm in the stool, which was later identified as Moniliformis moniliformis She is treated with pyrantel pamoate with a resolution of worms in stool. This case report aims to expand knowledge surrounding infections by the Acanthocephala phylum and the nuances of identi

Profilicollis rancoensis n. sp. is the tenth species of Profilicollis Meyer, 1931 which includes 9 other species mostly known from marine decapod crabs and shore birds. Cystacanths of P. rancoensis are described from the dominant freshwater crab Aegla abtao in Ranco Lake, Chile and are morphologically distinguished from cystacanths of the 9 other species based on a combination of 4 characters. These are body size, number of proboscis hook rows, number of hooks per row, and length of the largest anterior 2-4 hooks. Male and female cystacanths of P. rancoensis are 2.10-3.33 mm long having an ovo
