INTRODUCTION: The presence of schistocytes on the peripheral blood film during disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) remains controversial.
METHODS: We examined schistocytes count on blood films from 35 DIC patients and checked morphological anomalies of all RBCs.
RESULTS: Thirty of 35 patients presented with schistocytes and 22 with acanthocytes, which was the commonest shape anomaly. Mean percentage ± standard deviation was 0.33 ± 0.38%, median value was 0.1%, and range was 0-1.4%. The patients with schistocytes ≥ 1% had circumstances frequently associated with increased schistocyte

Abetalipoproteinemia (ABL) is characterized by acanthocytosis, hypocholesterolemia, and steatorrhea. Here, we describe a case of ABL associated with rickets and dysmorphic findings and the subsequent therapeutic course in an 18-month-old male referred for evaluation for failure to thrive and chronic fatty diarrhea. Examination revealed a pale child, dysmorphic face, and signs of rickets. Laboratory examination revealed low hemoglobin (3.7 gm/dl), low albumin (28 gm/L), low cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The blood smear showed acanthocytes while the small bowel histology showed the entero

BACKGROUND: Neuroacanthocytosis consists of a group of rare heterogeneous neurodegenerative disorders associated with acanthocytosis. Chorea-acanthocytosis, a variety of neuroacanthocytosis, is an autosomal recessive condition with clinical and radiologic features similar to Huntington disease. Although difficult, distinguishing between these entities is crucial as the implications for genetic counseling are significant.
REVIEW SUMMARY: We report the case of a 33-year-old female who presented to our institution with a 3-year history of chorea. The patient's prominent orofacial symptoms and th

Mild myopathy is a common manifestation of the X-linked McLeod neuroacanthocytosis syndrome. We present a patient with McLeod syndrome and a primarily subclinical myopathy, who developed severe rhabdomyolysis with renal insufficiency after a prolonged period of excessive motor restlessness due to an agitated psychotic state and a single dose of clozapine. Other possible causes for rhabdomyolysis such as prolonged immobility, trauma, hyperthermia, generalized seizures, toxin exposure, or metabolic changes were excluded. Clinical course was favorable, with persistent slight elevation of serum cr

RATIONALE: Neuroacanthocytosis (NA) is a heterogeneous group of inherited neurodegenerative disorders characterized by misshapen spiculated erythorcytes and symptoms that resemble Huntington's disease.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 59-year-old female who developed hyperkinetic involuntary movements that became progressively more obvious during the course of a year.
DIAGNOSES: Acanthocytes were observed in a peripheral blood smear. The patient had elevated levels of serum creatine kinase (CK). Gene sequencing did not reveal a genetic mutation.
INTERVENTIONS: The patient was administered oral tiapride,

Hallervorden-Spatz syndrome (HSS) is a rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder of childhood. Thirteen patients with this syndrome seen over a period of 7 years were reviewed. Two distinct groups were identified. The early onset childhood group had uniform presentation with developmental delay, recurrent falls, gait abnormalities, cognitive deterioration and dystonia. This group was also characterised by familial incidence, retinal involvement and absence of behavioural problems. Late onset group, included patients with different presentations such as behavioural changes, optic atro

The liver plays a key role in both protein biosynthesis and lipid metabolism. As a result, hepatic synthetic dysfunction can have adverse effects on both cellular and soluble components of blood. Anemia may occur due to the hemolysis of acanthocytes (spur cells), which is ultimately due to abnormal lipid composition of the red blood cell membrane. Thrombocytopenia may result from several different mechanisms. Cytopenias also may be a consequence of hypersplenism. The liver is the primary site for synthesis of most procoagulant and anticoagulant proteins. The coagulopathy of liver disease is th

We investigated the effects of N'-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) induced toxicity on red blood cell rheology in male rats and identified bands in proteomic profiles of brain which can be used as novel markers. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) profiles exhibited constitutive as well as induced expression of the polypeptides. Remarkably, the molecular weight range of the polypeptides (8-150 kDa) corresponded to that of the family of heat shock proteins. Our results revealed significant changes in blood parameters and showed the presence of acanthocytes, tear drop cells, spicules and cobot

We describe a beta-spectrin variant, named beta-spectrin Bari, characterized by a truncated chain and associated with hereditary spherocytosis. The clinical phenotype consists of a moderately severe hemolytic anemia, splenomegaly, and spherocytes and acanthocytes in the blood smear. The occurrence of the truncated protein, that represents about 8% of the total beta-spectrin occurring on the membrane, results in a marked spectrin deficiency. The altered protein is due to a single point mutation at position -2 (A->G) of the acceptor splice site of intron 16 leading to an aberrant beta-spectrin m

Lupus nephritis (LN) is one of the most frequent organ manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus. Urine analysis is suitable for screening and proteinuria or an active sediment with acanthocytes can be indicative for LN. The gold standard for confirming the diagnosis is a kidney biopsy. The type and extent of the histological alterations are decisive for treatment. The LN is histologically classified into six classes, whereby classes III, IV and V in particular require immunosuppressive treatment. The treatment of LN consists of the administration of hydroxychloroquine, angiotensin-conver

A girl, aged 11 years, was admitted due to recurrent rash on the whole body and mucosa for 10 years, and typical rash was erythema at the perioral region, hand-foot joints, vulva, and perianal region, with blisters, erosions, and ulcers on the erythema. The girl was improved after zinc supplementation. Her younger brother had similar rash and medical history. The histopathological examination showed epidermal parakeratosis with mild hyperkeratosis, severe spongiform edema of the stratum corneum, significant proliferation of acanthocytes, and vacuolation of keratinocytes. The genetic testing re

The occurrence of myoclonic and dystonic movements as an isolated expression of a neurologic condition of hereditary pattern have been scarcely described in literature. For this entity some authors proposed the denomination "hereditary myoclonic dystonia" while others prefer the use of the expression "hereditary essential myoclonus". We present a family in which this unusual association of abnormal movements affected several members in three generations. The propositus patient is a 14-year-old girl who have noticed the dystonic movements by 7 years of age and the myoclonic ones by 13 years of

INTRODUCTION: Inherited anemias diagnostic workup requires a step-wise algorithm. Causal genes implicated in congenital hemolytic anemia are numerous, making a gene-by-gene approach by Sanger sequencing time consuming, expensive and labour intensive. Targeted resequencing can be of great use in explaining these cases.
METHODOLOGY: Six months female presented with neonatal jaundice and negative family history. Clinical and laboratory evidences were suggestive of hemolytic anemia. G6PD deficiency, thalassemias, hemoglobinopathies, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, hereditary spherocytosis and pyruva

We report the autopsy of a 79-year-old Japanese woman with Dubin-Johnson syndrome accompanied by pneumonia, an abetalipoproteinemia-like lipid profile and acanthocytosis. On admission, physical examination of the patient revealed malnutrition. Blood tests revealed marked inflammatory changes and mild liver dysfunction. Chest X-ray indicated bilateral pneumonia. Total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglyceride levels were 89 mg/dL, 5 mg/dL and 6 mg/dL, respectively. Peripheral blood smears revealed numerous acanthocytes. Despite the administration of antibiotics and

Neuroacanthocytosis (NA) syndromes are a group of rare diseases characterized by neurological disorders and misshaped spiky red blood cells (acanthocytes) including Chorea-Acanthocytosis (ChAc), McLeod syndrome (MLS), Huntington disease-like 2 (HDL 2), pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN), abeta- and hypobetalipoproteinemia and aceruloplasminemia. This clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of diseases shares main clinical features presenting most often as a hyperkinetic movement disorder. Even though these are long noted disease conditions, we still know only little

We described a 41-year-old man with chorea-acanthocytosis, who presented severe choreoathetosis in all the limbs, neck, face and tongue. Especially, the oral area was affected most strikingly. He had difficulty in eating, because he pushed foods out of the mouth with the tongue. He received left posteroventral pallidotomy (PVP). His involuntary movements became much less enough for the patient to eat with a spoon in a sitting position by himself. Six months after the first operation, although involuntary movement on the right hand remained reduced, choreoballistic movement appeared on the left

Characteristic movement disorders were observed in two siblings who had neuroacanthocytosis syndrome with normal serum lipoprotein levels. The disorders included orolingual tic-like movements associated with vocalization, biting of the lip and tongue, peculiar dysphagia with bird-like drinking, and postural lapse with abrupt buckling of the knees. In addition, subtle features of parkinsonism and chorea were observed. These movement problems are strikingly similar to those described in cases of neuroacanthocytosis syndrome in several other familial and sporadic cases. Careful observations of th

The selenium level and activity of glutathione peroxidase in blood of children living in Kaschin-Beck disease (KBD) endemic areas were lower than that in nonendemic areas. KBD children were deficient in selenium, their lipid components, structure and function of the red cell membrane and cartilage tissue were abnormal. That is, the phospholipid (PL) content in the tissues of the patient was less than that of the controls in endemic and non-endemic areas. Especially as the phosphatidylcholine (PC) content decreased significantly, but sphingomyelin (SM) increased, the molar ratio of SM/PC and ch
