Even Resourceful Parents Lack Access to Ethics-Informed Resources.

AbstractEthics resources have the potential to help parents of children with medical complexity understand and navigate ethics concerns relevant to their child's care. This study conducted 28 semi-structured individual interviews with parents of children with chronic critical illness to learn about current ethics resources use patterns. Parents universally attested to encountering ethics concerns relevant to their child's care. These parents described ethics resources as helpful for navigating ethics challenges, including obtaining information, clarifying goals, advocating for access, and impr

Are Casinos Responsive To Customers Accessing Information about Self-Exclusion?

Self-exclusion is a promising intervention for reducing gambling behavior and gambling problems. Casino patrons have reported difficulties when requesting information or exercising the option to self-exclude. Employing an audit methodology, a pair of observational studies explored the accessibility of self-exclusion information from casinos within a mid-size metropolitan gambling market. In study 1, investigators telephoned casino customer service numbers and asked about self-exclusion. In study 2, trained research assistants visited those same casinos to ask multiple staff for self-exclusion

Accessing the Impact of TikTok's Algorithm on Regional Inequality in Health Information.

This study aims to audit the potential algorithmic bias in TikTok's health-related video recommendation toward geographically diverse groups in China. We employed 120 cloud phones and conducted two agent-based testing experiments simulating users' geographical locations and online behaviors. The results indicated significant regional inequality in video sources recommended by the TikTok algorithm, t(118) = 3.02, p = .003, with users from developed cities encountering a higher proportion of professional videos than those from underdeveloped cities. However, when users from both regions expresse

Internet skill-related problems in accessing online health information.

PURPOSE: Despite the amount of health information available online, there are several barriers that limit the Internet from being adopted as a source of health information. The purpose of this study was to identify individual skill-related problems that users experience when accessing the Internet for health information and services. METHODS: Between November 2009 and February 2010, 88 subjects participated in a performance test in which participants had to complete health-related assignments on the Internet. Subjects were randomly selected from a telephone book. A selective quota sample was

Prospects for limiting access to prenatal genetic information about Down syndrome in light of the expansion of prenatal genomics.

Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) is a mild to moderate intellectual disability. Historically, this condition has been a primary target for prenatal testing. However, Down syndrome has not been targeted for prenatal testing because it is an especially severe illness. The condition was just one that could be easily identified prenatally using the techniques first available decades ago. We are moving into an era in which we can prenatally test for a vast range of human traits. I argue that when we can test for anything, there is no longer any reason to continue targeting Down syndrome. I present an arg

Socio-cultural and structural barriers influencing parents' knowledge and access to information on schistosomiasis in children around Ugandan Lakes.

BACKGROUND: In Uganda, the national prevalence of schistosomiasis is 36.1% among the two-to-four-year age group. Knowledge about schistosomiasis and socio-cultural factors have been reported to influence adult participation in mass drug administrations of praziquantel, the standard medication used to treat the disease. In advance and support of the (pilot) introduction of the recently developed paediatric praziquantel formulation (arpraziquantel), we conducted research on parent and other community members' knowledge about paediatric schistosomiasis, their information sources, and potential pe

Access to Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis in Tanzania: A mixed-methods and theoretically-informed study to inform policy and practise.

INTRODUCTION: Rabies remains a preventable yet fatal disease that continues to claim lives in low- and middle-income countries due to barriers in accessing post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). With Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, now supporting PEP provision in rabies-endemic countries, understanding access barriers is critical. METHODS: We used mixed-methods to synthesise quantitative data on bite patients (>10,000) captured through an Integrated Bite Case Management platform across four regions of Tanzania, with qualitative data from hotline calls and peer-support chat established among health and

Co-designing accessible trial information: lessons from designing an inclusive patient information leaflet in the RaCeR2 study.

BACKGROUND: Informed consent is fundamental to ethical research, yet participant information leaflets (PILs) are often technical and difficult to understand. Although the importance of accessible study materials is widely recognised, practical guidance on how to develop them remains limited. For RaCeR 2, a randomised controlled trial evaluating different approaches to rehabilitation after shoulder rotator cuff repair, the baseline PIL was developed using Health Research Authority guidance. Early PPI consultation identified major concerns including dense formatting, overly complex language, and

Cervico-vaginal mucus (CVM) - an accessible source of immunologically informative biomolecules.

Cervico-vaginal mucus (CVM), the product of epithelial cells lining the uterus, cervix and vagina, is secreted to facilitate uterine lubrication and microbial clearance. Predominantly composed of water and mucins, CVM also contains high levels of immuno-active proteins such as immunoglobulin A (IgA), lactoferrin and lysozyme which protect against infection by blocking adhesion and mediating microbial killing. The repertoire of cytokines, chemokines and antimicrobial peptides is predominantly generated by the secretions of endometrial epithelial cells into the uterine lumen and concentrated in

LlymX: Multimodal LLM-Augmented XR for Context-Aware Information Access.

Extended Reality (XR) and Large Language Models (LLMs) can support context-aware, hands-free information access in industrial environments. This paper presents LlymX, a prototype combining a Unity-based 3D environment with an LLM-driven backend leveraging retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and vector databases. LlymX introduces an interaction-oriented XR-LLM pipeline in which spatial user actions, such as gestures and object selection, are grounded in semantic object representations and linked to retrieval from a structured knowledge base. Through speech, gestures, and text, users can identi

Healthy habits, better searches: behavioral predictors of cancer information access.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association of cancer-preventive lifestyle behaviors with cancer information-seeking experiences among United States adults without a history of cancer. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) 7 from 2412 participants between March 2024 and September 2024. A healthy behavior index was constructed based on lifestyle behaviors and categorized into quintiles (Q1-Q5), where Q5 reflects a higher healthy lifestyle score. The Information Seeking Experience scale was computed from four questions that capture participants'

Informal PrEP: Rethinking approaches to pharmaceutical access and HIV prevention pathways.

Informal access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is often represented as risky and marginal to formal HIV prevention services. Yet this framing obscures what informal PrEP makes possible and how it functions. This article explores 'informal' PrEP practices, which encompass (i) strategies through which people obtain and use PrEP outside formal medical channels and (ii) networks that facilitate such access. Drawing on recent empirical and theoretical studies, we interrogate informal PrEP as generative practices that challenge binaries between legal/illegal, regulated/unregulated, and forma

Predicting disease progression in multiple sclerosis with clinically accessible information and technology.

BACKGROUND: Predicting disease progression at the individual level is essential for personalized medicine. We previously developed machine-learning tools to estimate 5-year progression risk in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Such models should account for disease-modifying therapy (DMT) and objective outcome definitions. METHODS: In a retrospective multicenter case-control study, we evaluated adults with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) at baseline. Using machine-learning, we developed two complementary tools for individualized 5-year risk estimation: DAAE-M, optimized for

Comorbidities and confusion: addressing COVID-19 vaccine access and information challenges.

OBJECTIVE: Early in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, evidence emerged that individuals with chronic and immunocompromising conditions faced increased risk of severe infection, including death. The Australian Government and public health authorities prioritised these citizens' access to vaccines, including them in phase 1b of the rollout from 22 March 2021. Given the rapidly evolving knowledge and advice, we sought to understand what people with comorbidities understood about their eligibility, where they obtained information, and their experiences interfacing with the program.

Disparate impacts on online information access during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has stimulated important changes in online information access as digital engagement became necessary to meet the demand for health, economic, and educational resources. Our analysis of 55 billion everyday web search interactions during the pandemic across 25,150 US ZIP codes reveals that the extent to which different communities of internet users enlist digital resources varies based on socioeconomic and environmental factors. For example, we find that ZIP codes with lower income intensified their access to health information to a smaller extent than ZIP codes with higher

Where, when, and how to close dialysis access gaps: incorporation of geographic information system into data-driven planning : A commentary.

Barriers to timely and consistent dialysis care include characteristics at the patient, facility, and area levels. An article by Schroeder and colleagues uses national data spanning several thousand patients served by 67 dialysis centers across 6 districts of Israel, illustrating an approach that could be extended to other health care facilities within and beyond this national setting. The methods and findings demonstrate challenges and utility of incorporating geographic information systems (GIS) into data-driven planning to alleviate capacity constraints. Accurate estimation of distance and
