Women who have been injured should be examined for possible gynecological injury within 24 hours of the accident. Injuries to pregnant women do not usually cause an obstetrical crisis. When such an event does occur, there is positive evidence which relates it to the accident if there was such relationship. Metrorrhagia and menorrhagia are common sequelae of physical and psychological injury, but they are of temporary nature in cases in which there is no demonstrable pathologic change upon pelvic examination. Uterine prolapse, cystocele and rectocele are not caused by a single injury except in

As an effective alternative therapy, acupuncture is increasingly recognized and utilized worldwide. While acupuncture is used to treat neurological, respiratory, and circulatory disorders, its clinical efficacy is influenced by various factors. Even minimal stabbing wounds may cause physical injury or be life-threatening if done improperly. We report the case of a young man who died suddenly after receiving acupuncture treatment. Autopsy revealed multiple needlestick wounds in the bilateral lungs, liver, and spleen, leading to traumatic pneumothorax and hemoperitoneum, and the man ultimately d

OBJECT: The authors conducted a study to determine clinical, patient/family satisfaction, and financial outcomes following application of a management scheme that involves evaluation of computerized tomography (CT) scans and emergency department observation, rather than overnight admission, for children who have sustained accidental minor closed head injuries (Glasgow Coma Scale Scores 13-15) and who have met predefined clinical and radiographic criteria.
METHODS: During 18 consecutive months, all children age 24 months and older who sustained accidental minor head injuries were managed prosp

Fatal sharp-cut injuries are often associated with violent acts and are typically considered homicidal in nature. This case report presents a rare instance of an accidental fatality caused by glass, initially suspected as a homicide due to the injury pattern and preliminary crime scene scenario. It describes a 20-year-old male found dead on the roadside with a deep, wide, sharp wound to his right elbow and significant blood loss. An autopsy confirmed hemorrhagic shock due to a major vessel rupture. Further investigation, including CCTV footage, revealed that the intoxicated victim had accident

OBJECTIVE: Documentation of MRI and neurophysiological changes following accidental electrical injury.
SETTING: Tertiary care referral teaching hospital at Lucknow, India.
RESULTS: A 30-year-old lady developed amnesia and spastic paraparesis with loss of pin prick sensation below the second thoracic spinal segment following electrocution. Her spinal MRI was normal and cranial MRI revealed T2 hyperintensity in the right putamen. Peroneal, sural and electromyography were normal. Tibial central sensory conduction time was normal but central motor conduction time to lower limbs and right upper l

The body of a 61-year-old woman was found in the morning lying near a wire fence at her farm where she was cutting grass using a motor-powered strimmer. Autopsy revealed a laceration of the heart apex, haemopericardium and left haemothorax caused by a U-shaped wire projectile which was found lodged in the left thoracic cavity. The mechanistic analysis of the injuries and manner of death, however, were conclusive after a scene visit following the autopsy. The farm was surrounded by a wire fence to prevent wild pigs from entering in. The wire projectile was cut by unshielded blade of the strimme

OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to define the radiographic findings that help differentiate abusive head trauma (AHT) from accidental head injury.
METHODS: Our trauma registry was queried for all children ≤5 years of age presenting with traumatic brain injury (TBI) from 1996-2011.
RESULTS: Of 2,015 children with TBI, 71% had accidental injury and 29% had AHT. Children with AHT were more severely injured (ISS 22.1 vs 14.4; p < 0.0001) and had a higher mortality rate (15 vs 5%; p < 0.0001). Patients with AHT had higher rates of diffuse axonal injury (14 vs 8%; p < 0.0001) and subdural hemorrhage (76 v

UNLABELLED: General accidental hypothermia, which leads to death, is a complex problem, the scale of which is significantly underestimated. Statistics on mortality from general deep hypothermia are underreported because the diagnosis is often established after the fact, especially if death occurs in conditions complicating the body discovery or the cause of death determination. Many cases of death, erroneously classified as cardiovascular diseases or other causes, may actually be the result of long-term exposure to cold. In such situations, especially in remote areas or in the absence of prope

There is a serious need to develop effective mitigators against accidental radiation exposures. In radiation accidents, many people may receive nonuniform whole-body or partial-body irradiation. The lung is one of the more radiosensitive organs, demonstrating pneumonitis and fibrosis that are believed to develop at least partially because of radiation-induced chronic inflammation. Here we addressed the crucial questions of how damage to the lung can be mitigated and whether the response is affected by irradiation to the rest of the body. We examined the widely used dietary supplement genistein

We present the clinical features, radiological findings and outcome of infants with non-accidental head injury presenting to our department between 2001 and 2003. There were 26 male and 13 female infants, aged between 7 days and 5 months. Presenting symptoms included seizures, vomiting, bulging fontanel, decreased level of consciousness, focal neurological signs, anemia and respiratory distress. We classified the patients into three groups: mild head injury (8 patients), moderate head injury (11 patients) and severe head injury (20 patients). Detailed history taking and thorough physical exami

AIMS: (1) To identify whether infants and young children admitted to hospital with subdural haematomas (SDH) secondary to non-accidental head injury (NAHI), suffer from apnoea leading to radiological evidence of hypoxic ischaemic brain damage, and whether this is related to a poor prognosis; and (2) to determine what degree of trauma is associated with NAHI.
METHODS: Retrospective case series (1992-98) with case control analysis of 65 children under 2 years old, with an SDH secondary to NAHI. Outcome measures were presenting symptoms, associated injuries and apnoea at presentation, brain swel

PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, 36 children referred to paediatric neurology and neurosurgery during April 1995-June 1998 with a diagnosis of subdural haematoma (SDH) were studied. Nine were accidental secondary to witnessed trauma and 4 were iatrogenic. Non-accidental head injury (NAHI) was suspected in the remaining 23 children.
RESULTS: After a full clinical, radiological and social assessment, NAHI was diagnosed in 14, lateral sinus thrombosis in 1, 2 were accepted as accidental and 6 remained unexplained. In the NAHI group (n=14), 12 were between 4 and 16 weeks of age,

A three-year-old child presented to our emergency department with a hemiparesis five days following the accidental laceration of her neck with a piece of glass. The laceration had been thought to be superficial when she was initially evaluated. When seen again three days following the injury because of right-sided weakness, computerized tomography of her head and neck was unrevealing. However, using high resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) we were able to demonstrate a C1-2 cord contusion and an injury tract leading from the surface of the neck to this site. The unusual mechanism of in
