OBJECTIVE: To examine the risk of disability from unintentional injury in teenagers and young adults.
METHODS: Analyses of data from the National Child Development Study, a follow up study of 98% of all children born in England, Scotland, and Wales in one week in March, 1958. In 1981, 12,537 study participants, 76% of the original cohort, were asked about unintentional injuries since age 16 years requiring hospital treatment, and whether these injuries resulted in permanent disability.
RESULTS: 62% of men and 26% of women reported at least one accident since age 16 resulting in injury that r

The prevalence of illness was studied in a birth cohort of Christchurch three-year-olds. By three-years sample members had made an average of 15.9 consultations to general practitioners; 29 percent had been admitted to hospital and 47 percent had made hospital outpatient attendances. The majority of general practitioner consultations involved: respiratory illness; skin rash; gastro-intestinal illness and accidents. Six categories of illness accounted for the majority of hospital admissions: respiratory illness, accidents, feeding and management problems, suspect or inadequate home environment,

This study concerns all types of accidents which occurred within 1 year in children less than 15 years of age in 2 limited geographic areas: one urban, the other rural. 937 accidents have been registered. The accidental morbidity rate is 90 per 1,000 and the mortality rate 0.2 per 1,000 (close to the national average). Approximately 30% of accidents occur at home, 30% at school, 40% outside. Accidental death is more frequent in males, this difference increasing after the age of 10 years. The cost of the care was rather high, even though most of the accidents have had minor or no consequences.

Clavicle fractures in children occur twice as often as in adults. During a child's growth period they account for 10-15% of all fractures sustained. The questions which should be asked are how these fractures are sustained and under which circumstances are the children injured. In the study 256 children with clavicle fractures treated during the period 2008-2013 were analyzed. The underlying cause and place of injuries were classified using the ICD-10 classification system, using environmental causes of injury. The circumstances were in each case accidental injury. Environmental causes were tr

A total of 308 major and 519 minor accidents involving 588 patients occurred during one year at a somatic long-term care hospital and its associated nursing homes. In relation to the number of patients, the incidence of accidents was nearly three times higher in the nursing homes than in the hospital. The most prevalent injuries in female patients were fractures and hematomas, while open wounds were more frequent among male patients. Hip fractures were about as common in women as in men, while fractures of the extremities were three times more frequent in women. The majority of the accidents o

The residuals of traumatic injuries from home or workplace accidents, automobile accidents, physical assault, or other unintentional human error can affect victims both physically and psychologically. Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common among survivors of accidents and nonsexual assaults and can impede recovery. Early identification of PTSD and timely referrals to mental health providers can greatly reduce medical expenses, disability payments, lost wages, lost work productivity, and direct mental health costs. A physician-screening tool to identify PTSD is outlined in

The topic of accidents in elderly population has been studied on 2055 injured older than 65 years. The severity of injuries indicates the importance of accidents in this age-group. The proportion of fractures in the elderly population is twice of the average-in females over 75 years of age they take the half of the total number of injuries. While the incidence rate of males in the whole material with all of the age groups is twice of that of females, in elderly population it turns into equal. The rate of home-accidents grows with ageing. The elderly people specially the males suffer a high num

We collected the data on accidents due to chemicals occurred in Japan, and prepared the database. We also set up the World Wide Web homepage containing the explanation on accidents due to chemicals and the retrieval page for the database. We designed the retrieval page so that users can search the data from keywords such as chemicals (e.g. chlorine gas, hydrogen sulfide, pesticides), places (e.g. home, factory, vehicles, tank), causes (e.g. reaction, leakage, exhaust gas) and others (e.g. cleaning, painting, transportation).

From the data of a survey conducted in 1986 within the French area of Aquitaine and based on a representative sample of injuries having led to immediate death or hospitalization, different types of injuries were compared. Domestic and recreational accidents constituted the leading cause (41%) of injuries, followed by traffic accidents (28%) and suicides (13%). The overall ratio of immediate deaths to hospitalizations was 1 to 30 (1 to 10 for suicides, 1 to 20 for traffic accidents and 1 to 80 for domestic accidents). The overall annual incidence was 131 per 10,000 (respectively 20, 34 and 53 f

A survey of 390 patients aged over 65 with fractured femurs showed that nearly all the fractures that had been caused by nocturnal falls had occurred among the many patients who were still taking barbiturate hypnotics. Barbiturates were also strongly associated with a history of frequent falls. Barbiturates are still prescribed surprisingly often for the elderly. An analysis of 1622 elderly patients referred to a geriatric clinic in Nottingham showed that 41% were taking barbiturates in 1973. By 1976 this fugure had actually increased to 51%, despite the substantial campaign against barbiturat

QUESTION: A 3-year-old girl was brought to my office by her caregiver because she was not acting like herself. She was excessively sleepy, difficult to rouse, and had poor balance. The caregiver reported cannabis products in the home in the form of gummies the caregiver takes for sleep and anxiety. What symptoms should prompt consideration of marijuana ingestion and how should accidental ingestion be managed?
ANSWER: Cannabis is one of the most widely used drugs in the world. Many countries are decriminalizing and legalizing marijuana, but its negative impact on pediatric health is growing. C

This paper provides a review of a selection of recent papers, most of which derive from presentations given at the 4th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Control or the 6th International Conference on Product Safety Research, both of which took place in Amsterdam in May 1998. What all the accidents studied in these papers have in common is the absence of professional supervision. Everyone immediately involved in the incident--whether as injured party, unintended cause or informal supervisor is an 'amateur'. It is proposed that the term 'domestic and personal accidents' should be used to

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have shown statistically that the proportion of accidents at work, at home and on the roads is greater in narcoleptic patients than in the general population.
OBJECTIVE: The object of this study is to show the high prevalence of the risk of accidents in patients diagnosed as having the narcolepsy-cataplexy syndrome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied a group of 35 patients of both sexes, diagnosed in the Sleep Pathology Unit of our hospital between 1994 and 1998 as having the narcolepsy-cataplexy syndrome. They filled out a questionnaire to find the prevalence of a

A prospective study of 20 patients with traumatic amputations of the fingers and a thumb was carried out during a six week period at Mpilo Central Hospital, Bulawayo. Most of the adult injuries (17 patients) resulted from industrial accidents (76.5 pc) while two out the three children sustained their injury from domestic accidents. Inadequate safety precaution, ignorance and human error contributed significantly to the injuries. Safety education and preventive measures both at home and in industry should be inoculated into the daily life of individuals.

Compared to adults, children and adolescents run a considerably higher risk of suffering unintentional injuries (UI). To prevent UI, detailed knowledge of the overall accident occurrence and the determinants of UI is needed. This article gives an overview of the data sources covering the occurrence of UI among children and adolescents in Germany. According to the Robert Koch Institute's German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS), approximately 15.3 % of children and adolescents (1-17 years) in Germany suffer at least one UI within 12 months. Most accide
