A comparison of ketamine/xylazine and ketamine/xylazine/acepromazine anesthesia in the rabbit.

Parenteral anesthetic combinations such as ketamine and xylazine have become the agents of choice for anesthesia in the rabbit, because they are effective, easily administered and inexpensive. A number of recent reports have recommended including acepromazine in this combination, but a critical evaluation of this combination in the rabbit has not been reported. Five adult New Zealand white rabbits were anesthetized intramuscularly with ketamine (35 mg/kg) and xylazine (5 mg/kg) with or without acepromazine (0.75 mg/kg). The study was conducted in a double blind fashion, where each rabbit was a

Cardiopulmonary effects of a ketamine hydrochloride/acepromazine combination in healthy cats.

The effect of a ketamine hydrochloride/acepromazine combination on the cardiopulmonary function of 11 healthy cats was studied. Test parameters included cardiac output, measured by thermodilution, heart rate, respiratory rate, arterial blood pressure (systolic, diastolic and mean) and arterial blood gas analysis. Values for systemic vascular resistance, cardiac index and stroke volume were calculated. The cardiac output, cardiac index, stroke volume, arterial blood pressure and arterial blood pH decreased significantly (p less than 0.006). The arterial CO2 increased significantly (p less than

Urethane-acepromazine: a novel method of administering parenteral anesthesia in the rabbit.

Stable long-term anesthesia in the rabbit (greater than 8 hr) has been achieved by the administration of urethane and acepromazine. Twenty-five healthy male New Zealand white rabbits weighing 2 to 4 kg were used for this study. Two groups of animals were studied. The first group of 11 rabbits received urethane (1.0 g/kg) and acepromazine (1 mg/0.46 kg). This resulted in stable light plane anesthesia for 13.5 +/- 4.5 hr (mean + S.D.). The second group of 14 rabbits received urethane (1.3 g/kg) and acepromazine (1 mg/0.46 kg) which resulted in deep plane anesthesia for 23.0 +/- 4 hr. Heart rate

Premedication of dogs with acepromazine or pentazocine before euthanasia with carbon monoxide.

Euthanasia of unwanted or sick animals should always be done in a humane manner. This study involving two groups of 12 dogs evaluated a two step method of euthanasia using first acepromazine or pentazocine then inhalation of carbon monoxide. During the experiment, behavioral reactions (anxiety, agitation, vocalization and sphincter relaxation) and physiological parameters (electro-encephalogram, electrocardiogram, arterial blood pressure, respiratory and heart rates and serum cortisol) were monitored. The results showed that both drugs modified many behavioral reactions and physiological chang

Evaluation of the impact of acepromazine on tissue oxygenation in horses sedated with detomidine.

Sedation with α₂-agonists can impair microcirculation and oxygen delivery. This prospective randomized crossover study investigated whether administering acepromazine maleate before detomidine hydrochloride maintains higher peripheral tissue oxygen saturation (StO₂) in sedated horses. Eight healthy adult horses randomly received intravenous detomidine (10 μg/kg) either alone (D) or in combination with acepromazine (20 μg/kg; DA), with a one-week washout. Hemoglobin concentration and central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO₂) were measured at baseline. Tissue oxygen saturation, tissue hemoglobin

Effects of acepromazine, xylazine and propofol on spinal reflexes in healthy dogs.

BACKGROUND: In the neurological examination, it is crucial to identify the possible location of the lesion in order to determine the appropriate treatment process. In aggressive animals, chemical restraint may be necessary due to their non-cooperative behaviour. However, sedatives may distort the results of examinations. Therefore, a drug should be found that has minimal impact on the examination results. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of acepromazine, xylazine, and propofol on spinal reflexes in healthy dogs. METHODS: In a randomized, blinded study, ten native adult mixed-breed dogs

Effects of acepromazine and xylazine on subjective and objective assessments of forelimb lameness.

BACKGROUND: To facilitate lameness evaluation, sedatives such as xylazine and acepromazine are regularly used in the clinical setting, despite concerns that they may confound lameness assessment. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of low doses of acepromazine and xylazine on subjective and objective lameness assessment. STUDY DESIGN: Randomised, blinded, crossover study. METHODS: Six horses with experimentally induced solar pain were evaluated over a 1-hour period after treatment with intravenous xylazine (0.1 or 0.2 mg/kg), intravenous acepromazine (0.02 or

Disposition, bioavailability and clinical efficacy of orally administered acepromazine in the horse.

The pharmacokinetics and pharmacological efficacy of orally (p.o.) administered acepromazine were studied and compared with the intravenous (i.v.) route of administration in a cross-over study using six horses. The oral kinetics of acepromazine can be described by a two-compartment open model with first-order absorption. The drug was rapidly absorbed after p.o. administration with a half-life of 0.84 h, tmax of 0.4 h and Cmax of 59 ng/ml. The elimination was slower after p.o. administration (half-life 6.04 h) than after i.v. injection (half-life 2.6 h). The bioavailability of the orally admini

Interactions between chloramphenicol, acepromazine, phenylbutazone, rifampin and thiamylal in the horse.

The potential for interactions between chloramphenicol, phenylbutazone, acepromazine and thiamylal and chloramphenicol, rifampin, and phenylbutazone were evaluated in two groups of experiments. In the first, five horses were given thiamylal intravenously (iv) (6.6 mg/kg) after pretreatment with acepromazine, and the time of recumbency was determined. Administration of chloramphenicol iv (25 mg/kg) 1 h prior to anaesthesia significantly lengthened the recumbency time from 21.8 +/- 4.8 mins to 36.0 +/- 8.3 mins. There was an apparent but not statistically significant decrease in recumbency time

Sedative and cardiorespiratory effects of acepromazine or atropine given before dexmedetomidine in dogs.

To test the hypothesis that acepromazine could potentiate the sedative actions and attenuate the pressor response induced by dexmedetomidine, the effects of acepromazine or atropine were compared in six healthy adult dogs treated with this alpha2-agonist. In a randomised block design, the dogs received intravenous doses of either physiological saline, 0.05 mg/kg acepromazine or 0.04 mg/kg atropine, 15 minutes before an intravenous dose of 5 microg/kg dexmedetomidine.
