Skin infection on both legs caused by Acremonium strictum (case report).

Acremonium species are saprophytic molds widely distributed in nature, existing in soil and decaying vegetation. Penetrating wounds, intravascular catheters and immunosuppression are risk factors for invasive infections of Acremonium. The fungus can also cause cutaneous infections and mycetoma in the immunocompetent; such infections occur in extremities open to trauma. In this paper, a female patient with skin infection due to Acremonium strictum in both legs is described.

Acremonium strictum fungaemia in a paediatric immunocompromised patient: diagnosis and treatment difficulties.

During the past two decades, an increasing number of unusual moulds has been reported as responsible for septicaemia and systemic or disseminated infections in immunocompromised patients. Investigation of fever in a 10-year-old boy with acute myeloblastic leukaemia, including blood cultures on selective media, allowed the diagnosis of a fungaemia due to the slow-growing fungus Acremonium strictum. The patient recovered with liposomal amphotericin B (AmB) and voriconazole, followed by voriconazole alone due to AmB resistance. Facing a neutropenic patient with fever, clinicians usually suspect b

Isolation of Acremonium strictum from pleural fluid of a patient with colon adenocarcinoma.

Although Acremonium strictum is environmentally widespread as opportunistic fungus, it may cause infection in patients who have immunodeficiency. In this study, A. strictum were isolated from the pleural fluid of a patient with colon adenocarcinoma. The patient did not receive antifungal therapy because the patient died on the same day after the isolation of the mould from the pleural fluid. Major risk factors for the fungal infection are surgery because of cancer, administration of parenteral hyperalimentation and broad-spectrum antibiotics, attaching chest tube and ventilation tube and hospi

Effect of oxygen on the respiratory system and cephalosporin-C production in Acremonium chrysogenum.

In this paper in vivo studies on the overall and cyanide-resistant respiration of Acremonium chrysogenum in connection with different oxygen transfer rates are discussed. Two parameters of the cyanide-resistant respiration, the activity and the capacity were examined separately during cultivation together with the possibly respiration-influencing factors like NADH/NAD content and ADP-limitation. It was finally concluded that the cyanide-resistant respiration seems to be independent of the amount and proportion of oxidized/reduced coenzymes and not limited by ADP or phosphate, but it is strongl

Alleviating Effects of Ethanol Extract from Acremonium terricola Culture on Patulin Toxicity.

Exposure to patulin (PAT) poses a significant health risk to animals, emphasizing the need for natural, safe substances to mitigate toxicity. Acremonium terricola culture (ATC), a fungal fermentation-derived feed additive, is known for its antioxidant properties, yet its potential to alleviate mycotoxin-induced toxicity remains largely uninvestigated. In this study, the ethanol extracts from the ATC (EEAT) were prepared with a total phenolic content of 67.9 mg GAE/g and a total flavonoid content of 32.7 mg RE/g. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry

Calcaneal osteomyelitis caused by Acremonium sp in an immunocompetent adult - A case report.

Fungal osteomyelitis of calcaneus is rare in immunocompetent adults. A case of fungal osteomyelitis of calcaneus in a 19 year old immunocompetent female without any history of trauma caused by Acremonium sp is presented. The patient was treated with surgical debridement, autogenous iliac crest bone grafting and antifungal chemotherapy for 6 months. At latest follow up after 2 years, patient is asymptomatic and the osteolytic lesion is healed with no signs of recurrence. This case report highlights a rare presentation of chronic painful calcaneal osteomyelitis with an osteolytic lesion.

Chronic fungal osteomyelitis of the tibia due to Acremonium curvulum: a rare case.

Fungal osteomyelitis is a rare disease which usually presents in an indolent manner. Opportunistic infections due to other non-aspergillus moulds are an emerging entity. We report a case of fungal osteomyelitis due to Acremonium spp in an immunocompetent adult which showed a chronic, indolent course but responded well to treatment with voriconazole. This case highlights the importance of diagnosing the causative agent in fungal osteomyelitis as species specific susceptibility can aid in the treatment of fungal osteomyelitis.

An unusual cluster of Acremonium kiliense fungaemias in a haematopoietic cell transplantation unit.

The genus Acremonium (formerly known as Cephalosporium) is a large polyphyletic fungal genus that comprises approximately 150 phylogenetically distant species, commonly isolated from the environment. Clinical cases concern mostly superficial infections after traumatic inoculation, but there are reports of opportunistic invasive infections in immunocompromised patients. Acremonium kiliense has been described as a cause of mycetoma, keratitis, endophthalmitis, endocarditis, and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis. We describe an unusual cluster of possible catheter-r

Cephaibols, new peptaibol antibiotics with anthelmintic properties from Acremonium tubakii DSM 12774.

Two groups of new peptaibol-type antibiotics termed cephaibols have been isolated from the fungus Acremonium tubakii, DSM 12774. These 16- or 17-unit straight-chain peptides, whose structures were characterized by amino acid analyses, 2-D NMR experiments, and by mass spectrometric sequencing, have a high content of the unusual amino acids aminoisobutyric acid and isovaline. The principal constituent of the novel peptaibol mixture is cephaibol A, which is formed in abundance in cultures of the wild strain. The striking biological property of cephaibol A is its pronounced anthelmintic action and

Acremonium (Sarocladium) periprosthetic joint infection: case report, literature review, and proposed antifungal regimen.

BACKGROUND: Fungal periprosthetic joint infections are rare. Acremonium osteoarticular infections are scarcely reported. Variable susceptibility to antifungal agents have been reported and optimal pharmacotherapy has yet to be established. Here we illustrate an Acremonium osteoarticular infection involving a prosthetic joint and present an antifungal regimen that had led to treatment success. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old female with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 had left total knee arthroplasty done in 2012 with a cementless implant for knee osteoarthritis. In 2019, the patient had asympt

Eumycetoma Caused by Acremonium Species in a Farmer From Western Guatemala: A Case Report.

Eumycetoma is a chronic subcutaneous infection caused by filamentous fungi and is clinically characterized by swelling, nodules, sinus tracts, and grain discharge. Acremonium species are rare opportunistic fungal pathogens implicated in eumycetoma, with few reports in the dermatologic literature. This report describes a 64-year-old male farmer from rural western Guatemala with a 14-year history of chronic dermatosis localized to the right foot. Clinical examination identified nodular lesions, crusting, and edema, consistent with mycetoma. Diagnosis was confirmed through mycological studies and

Subcutaneous pseudomycetoma of the knee caused by Acremonium species in a diabetic male: A case report.

A subcutaneous infection in the form of pseudomycetoma is rare. Acremonium species are rarely considered to be pathogenic in subcutaneous infections due to their ubiquitous nature. We report a case of subcutaneous pseudomycetoma over the dorsolateral aspect of the left knee caused by Acremonium species in a 55-year-old diabetic male who was treated successfully with oral itraconazole.

[Asymptomatic fungemia caused by Acremonium sp associated with colonization of a central venous catheter].

BACKGROUND: Microorganisms considered saprophytes have emerged as invasive or indolent pathogens among immuno-compromised patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We detected an initial case of catheter-related Acremonium sp fungemia on a previously asymptomatic patient. We diagnosed a second case five weeks later. Both patients had a non-tunneled central venous catheter (CVC) that had been cared for following routine protocol by nurses in the Intravenous Therapy Team on a weekly basis. The sole risk factor that both patients shared was that they had received total parenteral nutrition (TPN) by a CVC

Cytochalasins from the marine-derived fungus Acremonium implicatum DFFSCS001 and their anti-inflammatory activities.

Nine undescribed cytochalasins, acrechalasins A‒I, together with three known analogs 21-O-deacetyl-L-696,474 and diaporthichalasins B and A were isolated from the marine-derived fungus Acremonium implicatum DFFSCS001. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, and the absolute configurations of acrechalasins C and D and diaporthichalasin B were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffractions. Among them, acrechalasins A and B had a rare open-chain cytochalasin skeleton with a monocyclic butyrolactam group. Biologically, acrechalasins A‒I and 21-O-deacetyl-L-696,474 exhibited si

Cyanide-resistant alternative respiration is strictly correlated to intracellular peroxide levels in Acremonium chrysogenum.

A strict correlation between the intensity of the cyanide-resistant alternative respiratory pathway and the intracellular peroxide levels in the cephalosporin C producer filamentous fungus Acremonium chrysogenum was demonstrated. Intracellular peroxide levels increased in a dose-dependent manner after addition of H2O2 to the culture media. A similar phenomenon was observed due to the specific inhibition of catalase by salicylic acid. In both cases, cyanide-resistant respiration was markedly stimulated. On the other hand, both cyanide-resistant respiration and intracellular peroxide levels were

A muramidase from Acremonium alcalophilum hydrolyse peptidoglycan found in the gastrointestinal tract of broiler chickens.

This study evaluates peptidoglycan hydrolysis by a microbial muramidase from the fungus Acremonium alcalophilum in vitro and in the gastrointestinal tract of broiler chickens. Peptidoglycan used for in vitro studies was derived from 5 gram-positive chicken gut isolate type strains. In vitro peptidoglycan hydrolysis was studied by three approaches: (a) helium ion microscopy to identify visual phenotypes of hydrolysis, (b) reducing end assay to quantify solubilization of peptidoglycan fragments, and (c) mass spectroscopy to estimate relative abundances of soluble substrates and reaction products

Two rare cases of Acremonium acute endophthalmitis after cataract surgery in a tertiary care hospital.

This report describes two cases of Acremonium sp. endophthalmitis, occurring in two patients who underwent cataract surgery on the same day in the same operating room of our hospital ophthalmology clinic. Diagnosis of fungal endophthalmitis was established by the repeated isolation of the same fungal agent from vitreous washing, acqueous fluid and intraocular lens samples and by its identification on the basis of morphological and molecular features. The cases reported in this study emphasize the need for clinical microbiology laboratories to be prepared to face the diagnosis of uncommon infec

Expression of cefF significantly decreased deacetoxycephalosporin C formation during cephalosporin C production in Acremonium chrysogenum.

Deacetoxycephalosporin C (DAOC) is not only the precursor but also one of the by-products during cephalosporin C (CPC) biosynthesis. One enzyme (DAOC/DAC synthase) is responsible for the two-step conversion of penicillin N into deacetylcephalosporin C (DAC) in Acremonium chrysogenum, while two enzymes (DAOC synthase and DAOC hydroxylase) were involved in this reaction in Streptomyces clavuligerus and Amycolatopsis lactamdurans (Nocardia lactamdurans). In this study, the DAOC hydroxylase gene cefF was cloned from Streptomyces clavuligerus and introduced into Acremonium chrysogenum through Agrob

RNA-silencing in Penicillium chrysogenum and Acremonium chrysogenum: validation studies using beta-lactam genes expression.

In this work we report the development and validation of a new RNA interference vector (pJL43-RNAi) containing a double-stranded RNA expression cassette for gene silencing in the filamentous fungi Penicillium chrysogenum and Acremonium chrysogenum. Classical targeted gene disruption in these fungi is very laborious and inefficient due to the low frequency of homologous recombination. The RNAi vector has been validated by testing the attenuation of two different genes of the beta-lactam pathway; pcbC in P. chrysogenum and cefEF in A. chrysogenum. Quantification of mRNA transcript levels and ant
