BACKGROUND: Subgingival microbiome in disease-associated subgingival sites is known to be dysbiotic and significantly altered. In patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the extent of dysbiosis in disease- and health-associated subgingival sites is not clear.
METHODS: 8 RA and 10 non-RA subjects were recruited for this pilot study. All subjects received full oral examination and underwent collection of subgingival plaque samples from both shallow (periodontal health-associated, probing depth ≤ 3mm) and deep subgingival sites (periodontal disease-associated, probing depth ≥ 4 mm). RA subjects

The nasal cavity harbors diverse microbiota that contributes to human health and respiratory diseases. However, whether and to what extent the host genome shapes the nasal microbiome remains largely unknown. Here, by dissecting the human genome and nasal metagenome data from 1401 healthy individuals, we demonstrated that the top three host genetic principal components strongly correlated with the nasal microbiota diversity and composition. The genetic association analyses identified 63 genome-wide significant loci affecting the nasal microbial taxa and functions, of which 2 loci reached study-

Actinotignum schaalii (formerly known as Actinobaculum schaalii) is an anaerobic or facultative anaerobic gram-positive bacillus that can be found commensally in the urogenital region. It can be overlooked because it grows slowly and is difficult to identify with classical microbiology laboratory techniques. Colonies become visible after 48-72 hours of incubation on blood agar in anaerobic or CO₂-rich media. While it typically causes urinary tract infection in older individuals, cases of bacteremia, vertebral osteomyelitis, endocarditis and cellulitis have been reported. Fournier's gangrene ca

Intramyocardial abscesses are rare in cattle and may lead to unspecific clinical signs. This case report describes the clinical and echocardiographic findings in an 8 year old Brown Swiss cow presented with an intramural myocardial abscess. The main clinical findings were anorexia, drop in milk yield, fever, tachycardia, and hyperfibrinogenemia. Neither heart murmurs nor cardiac arrhythmias were present on auscultation. Transthoracic echocardiographic examination revealed a prominent intramural mass embedded in the left ventricular free wall and bulging into the lumen of the left ventricle. Di

A 9-mo-old, castrated male Saint Bernard dog was presented for evaluation of periorbital swelling, severe uveitis, and secondary glaucoma. Concurrently, chest radiographs had evidence of pneumonia. Enucleation was performed after failure of aggressive medical management. Histopathology of the globe confirmed severe necrosuppurative panophthalmitis and periocular cellulitis with myriad intra- and extracellular bacteria forming long filamentous chains. The bacteria were gram-positive and GMS-positive but acid-fast-negative. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed on formalin-fixed, paraff

Actinomycosis is a rare, chronic, slowly progressive granulomatous disease caused by filamentous gram-positive anaerobic bacteria from the Actinomycetaceae family (genus Actinomyces). It has become a rare condition because of the widespread use of antibiotics. When clinical symptoms are not typical, diagnosis of this condition becomes difficult. This report describes a case involving an 82-year-old woman who was diagnosed with actinomycotic osteomyelitis of the mandible using matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The patient was referred t

Mandibular pyogranulomatous osteomyelitis was diagnosed in a female Sannen goat. The doe presented for difficulty prehending and chewing food. The left mandible was swollen and firm on palpation. Radiographs revealed changes consistent with osteomyelitis of the affected mandible. Arcanobacterium pyogenes was isolated from aspirates of swollen mandible. Despite antimicrobial therapy, the goat died. Histopathological findings were consistent with pyogranulomatous disease of the affected mandible. The histopathological findings were similar to those reported for actinomycosis, caused by Actinomyc

The component of crude phospholipid responsible for B. matruchotii calcification was isolated. Crude phospholipid, extracted from the microorganism, was separated into five fractions by column chromatography. A single, protein-containing fraction catalyzed apatite formation in a metastable calcium phosphate solution. The nucleating fraction was identified as a proteolipid.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have demonstrated the influence of gut microbiota on the development of obesity. In this study, we utilized Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the gut microbiota characteristics among different types of obese patients, aiming to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and provide novel insights for obesity treatment.
METHODS: Two-sample multivariable Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was employed to assess causal relationships between gut microbiota and various obesity subtypes. Gut microbiota data were obtained from the international consortium

BACKGROUND: Fournier's gangrene (FG), a urological emergency with high mortality, is an infectious necrotizing fasciitis of the perineal and genital regions. The majority of FG is caused by polymicrobial organisms involving mixed aerobes and anaerobes but rarely reveals Actinomyces species.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a healthy 67-year-old Asian male who presented with rapidly progressive painful swelling of the scrotum. Clinically diagnosed with FG, the patient underwent an emergency radical debridement, followed by broad-spectrum antibiotics and negative pressure wound therapy. The identif

Rothia dentocariosa was proved as a primary pathogen for man in the case of abdominal infection of a 19 year old woman. Clinical findings were typical for actinomycosis and the patient was cured with penicillin following surgery. Actinomycotic granules were proved by direct microscopy in the pus and R. dentocariosa was recovered as a single pathogen according to the microscopy. Two morphologically distinct isolates recovered from primocultures were described. They were studied separately and finally they were recognized as physiologically identical varieties of a single organism. In addition,

INTRODUCTION: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory condition often associated with desquamative gingivitis (DG). The oral microbiome's role in OLP and DG (OLP-DG) is gaining recognition, but prior 16S rRNA studies lacked taxonomic resolution. This study introduced shotgun metagenomic sequencing to thoroughly compare the supragingival and subgingival plaque microbiomes of individuals with and without OLP-DG.
METHODS: Twenty-seven participants (9 OLP-DG, 18 non-OLP) were recruited. Supra- and subgingival plaque samples were collected separately. Genomic DNA was analyzed using shot

Mycoplasma pneumonia, caused by Mycoplasma bovis (Mycoplasmopsis bovis; M. bovis), is linked with severe inflammatory reactions in the lungs and can be challenging to treat with antibiotics. Biofilms play a significant role in bacterial persistence and contribute to the development of chronic lesions. A recent study has shown that polymicrobial interactions between species are an important factor in biofilm formation, yet the precise mechanism of biofilm formation in M. bovis remains unknown. By assuming multiple pathogen infections in the bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC), this study

To enhance the current clinical understanding and improve the diagnosis and treatment of Actinotignum schaalii infections, we have presented here a report of the case of recurrent infections at a periumbilical scar, induced by Actinotignum schaalii and complicated by abscess formation in a 50-year-old woman with persistent festering at the site of a periumbilical scar after laparoscopy 9 years ago, with subsequent ruptures over the past 2 years. Physical examination revealed a radial fold scar with localized redness and slight swelling of the skin below the navel. Although no significant incre
