Thymol provokes burst of action potentials in neurons of snail Caucasotachea atrolabiata.

Thymol, a phenolic monoterpene, is well known for its antimicrobial, antifungal and antioxidant properties. In spite of wide use in oral care products, pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparation and in food industry, the effects of thymol on the neuronal activity and intrinsic properties have not been well studied. We studied the effects of thymol on the spontaneous activity and action potential properties of central neurons of snail Caucasotachea atrolabiata. Thymol (1 mM) altered action potentials characteristics and provoked epileptiform burst firing in snail neurons, which were partially reve

Latency shift in compound muscle action potentials during electroneurography in facial palsy.

OBJECTIVE: Electroneurography (ENoG) reliably predicts the prognosis of facial palsy. However, the results of ENoG are dependent on the location, where the wave is detected, as a compound muscle action potential (CMAP) arising from the facial muscles. To minimize errors in prognostic prediction, we analysed the latencies of facial CMAPs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-seven patients with unilateral peripheral facial palsy and 24 healthy volunteers were enrolled. Amplitudes, negative peak latencies (NPL), and rise latencies (RL) of CMAPs were measured on the paralysed and healthy sides in patien

Complementary metrics of human auditory nerve function derived from compound action potentials.

Declines in auditory nerve (AN) function contribute to suprathreshold auditory processing and communication deficits in individuals with normal hearing, hearing loss, hyperacusis, and tinnitus. Procedures to characterize AN loss or dysfunction in humans are limited. We report several novel complementary metrics using the compound action potential (CAP), a direct measure of summated AN activity. Together, these metrics may be used to characterize AN function noninvasively in humans. We examined how these metrics change with stimulus intensity and interpreted these changes within a framework of

Nicotinic acid (niacin): new lipid-independent mechanisms of action and therapeutic potentials.

Nicotinic acid (niacin) has been used for decades to prevent and treat atherosclerosis. The well-documented antiatherogenic activity is believed to result from its antidyslipidemic effects, which are accompanied by unwanted effects, especially a flush. There has been renewed interest in nicotinic acid owing to the need for improved prevention of atherosclerosis in patients already taking statins. In addition, the identification of a nicotinic acid receptor expressed in adipocytes and immune cells has helped to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the antiatherosclerotic as well as the unwanted

Oxytocin enhances action potentials in pregnant human myometrium--a study with microelectrodes.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to quantitatively assess the effects of oxytocin on membrane properties in the pregnant human myometrium. STUDY DESIGN: Specimens were obtained from the lower uterine segment during cesarean section at term. Electrical activity was recorded from individual cells by a conventional microelectrode method and the membrane functions were analyzed. RESULTS: Two types of spontaneous action potentials were seen: a long plateau potential and a spike-like action potential. With no change in the resting membrane potential, low concentrations of oxytocin either evoked an actio

Effects of components of myocardial ischaemia on cardiac action potentials in vitro.

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of hypoxia (PO2 = 34 mm Hg), acidosis (pH 6.8), lactate (10 mM), glucose removal, hyperkalaemia (8 mM), and lysophosphatidylcholine (5-50 microM), alone and in combination, on paced sheep Purkinje fibre action potentials in an attempt to find a combination that simulated the electrophysiological changes associated with the delayed phase of ischaemia-induced arrhythmias. Modification of the physiological salt solution to produce a combination of acidosis, lactate, and lysophosphatidylcholine (5 microM) reduced the resting membrane potential and t

Physiological and pharmacological analysis of transmembrane action potentials of human atrial fibers.

Transmembrane action potentials (APs) of electrically paced right-atrial tissue obtained from 38 patients of corrective open-heart surgery were analyzed. Two types of APs could be found. The APs of 20 patients (group I) were similar to those of other laboratory mammals. The average resting potential (RP) and the amplitude and maximum rate of rise of phase 0 of APs (Vmax) were -75 mV, 86 mV, and 152 V/sec, respectively, only the repolarization phase being more prolonged than that of other mammalian APs. Epinephrine (5.8 X 10(-6) mole/liter) increased the amplitude of APs and prolonged the plate

Ionic dependence and transmission of epidermal action potentials in a newt embryo.

The ionic dependency and transmission of epidermal action potentials have been examined from tailbud to hatching stages of newt embryos. Previously we have reported that the epidermal action potential is composed of a fast- and slow-action component; only the slow-action component, however, is transmitted to other cells. We address in this report the mechanism by which these responses are mediated. The slow-action potential is not produced in Na+-free saline, tricaine saline, or following the application of TTX, and thus appears to be Na+ dependent. The fast-action potential on the other hand

Detection of spinal action potentials with subdural electrodes in freely moving rodents.

Recording directly from the spinal cord surface in freely behaving animals provides a promising means to investigate spinal electrophysiology, typically examined in stimulation experiments or during controlled behaviour. In a two-week experiment, we extract high-frequency spiking activity in control and spinal cord injured rats during freely behaving, open-field recording sessions. Electrical signals were recorded using sputtered iridium oxide (SIROF) electrodes on a polyimide-based, flexible probe surgically inserted beneath the dura of the spinal column, with electrodes in direct contact wit

DYSCALCULIA, a Venus flytrap mutant without the ability to count action potentials.

The Venus flytrap Dionaea muscipula estimates prey nutrient content by counting trigger hair contacts initiating action potentials (APs) and calcium waves traveling all over the trap.1,2,3 A first AP is associated with a subcritical rise in cytosolic calcium concentration, but when the second AP arrives in time, calcium levels pass the threshold required for fast trap closure. Consequently, memory function and decision-making are timed via a calcium clock.3,4 For higher numbers of APs elicited by the struggling prey, the Ca2+ clock connects to the networks governed by the touch hormone jasmoni

Simulation of spontaneous action potentials of cardiomyocytes in pulmonary veins of rabbits.

Atrial fibrillation is the most prevalent arrhythmia, but the mechanisms by which it develops are not clear. Recently, over 90% of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation was found to be located inside the main pulmonary veins (PVs). We found that single cardiac myocytes isolated from the main PVs of rabbits generate spontaneous action potentials (SAP). We therefore assayed the electrical characteristics of these cardiomyocytes. Among the diverse ionic currents identified were INa, ICa,L, IK1, IKr, IKs, Ito, IKsus, Incx, Ipump, IKH and ICl,Ca. In contrast, IK1 was minimal, IKs could be detected only in

Electrophysiologic evaluation of lumbosacral single nerve roots using compound muscle action potentials.

Transcutaneous electrical stimulation applied to the vertebral column produces compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) from the leg muscles. Using this method, we evaluated the efferent pathways of the lumbosacral nerve roots. The subjects were 26 healthy volunteers and 31 patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH). CMAP recordings were obtained from the bilateral vastus medialis, tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum brevis, and abductor hallucis muscles using low-output-impedance stimulation. In normal subjects, the CMAP latency increased linearly with the distance between the stimulating

Pharmacological induction of rhythmical activity and plateau action potentials in unmyelinated axons.

The physiological function of the axon is to conduct short all-or-none action potentials from their site of initiation (usually the cell body) to the synapse. To ensure this function, both passive and active biophysical properties of the axons are tuned very precisely, especially the voltage-dependent ionic conductances to sodium and potassium. Under normal conditions, axons are not spontaneously active. Minor modifications of their ionic micro-environment or slight changes in the membrane properties are however sufficient to induce rhythmical activity and modify the time course of the action

Bipolar recording of the cochlear nerve action potentials during cerebellopontine angle surgery.

A technique of bipolar recording of the cochlear nerve compound action potentials (CAPs) to make identification and preservation of the cochlear nerve easier during cerebellopontine angle surgery is described. Four patients, aged 32 to 65 years, with acoustic tumors smaller than 2 mm and serviceable hearing, participated in the study. To investigate the resolution power of bipolar CAP recordings, a pilot study had been performed in a group of four patients submitted to vestibular neurectomy. Two silver electrodes insulated by Teflon up to the exposed ends were utilized for bipolar recording of

Interaction of lidocaine and benzocaine in depressing Vmax of ventricular action potentials.

This paper reports the interactions between lidocaine and benzocaine with cardiac sodium channels. The magnitude of the maximum upstroke velocity (Vmax) of the guinea-pig papillary muscle action potential was taken as an indirect measurement of the sodium current. The hypothesis that both the charged and neutral forms of local anaesthetics share a common receptor was tested. In preparations stimulated at a frequency of 0.1 Hz, a mixture of equieffective concentrations of benzocaine and lidocaine produced a decrease in Vmax similar to that obtained with each of the drugs alone. Therefore, the t

Carotid and vagal afferents and drug action on transcallosally evoked cortical potentials.

The use of transcallosally evoked cortical potentials to study the action of intracarotidly injected drugs on cerebral synapses has necessitated the demonstration that vagal, baroreceptor, and chemoreceptor influences do not play essential roles in the drug effects observed-for example, the cerebral synaptic inhibitory action of serotonin.
