Sleep Disturbance, Activities of Daily Living, and Depressive Symptoms among Older Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Research suggests sleep disturbance plays a role in depression and risk for suicidal behavior (i.e., ideation, attempts, death by suicide). How sleep disturbance affects suicide risk is unclear and one's ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) may help explain this relation. This study examined associations between sleep problems, ADLs, and either depressive symptoms or suicide risk among older adults. We hypothesized that ADLs would mediate relations between sleep problems and depressive symptoms and suicide risk. METHOD: Participants (N = 134; age ≥65) were recruited

Difficulty and help with activities of daily living among older adults living alone with cognitive impairment.

INTRODUCTION: There is limited research on difficulties with activities of daily living (I/ADLs) among older adults living alone with cognitive impairment, including differences by race/ethnicity. METHODS: For U.S. Health and Retirement Study (2000-2014) participants aged 55+ living alone with cognitive impairment (4,666 individuals; 9,091 observations), we evaluated I/ADL difficulty and help. RESULTS: Among 4.3 million adults aged 55+ living alone with cognitive impairment, an estimated 46% reported an I/ADL difficulty; 72% reported not receiving help with an I/ADL. Women reported more diff

Activities of Daily Living and Importance of Sex Among Midlife and Older Adults.

A large portion of U.S. adults are estimated to have a disability with a higher disability prevalence for those 50 years and older. However, few U.S. studies have assessed the sexual health of midlife and older adults with disabilities. The current study used Wave 3 data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project to examine the relationship between activities of daily living (ADL) and importance of sex. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate analyses were conducted for a nationally representative analytic sample of 4371 participants. We found that participants with three or mor

Impact of Hospitalization on Patients Ability to Perform Basic Activities of Daily Living.

Functional independence is dictated by the ability to perform basic activities of daily living (ADLs). Although hospitalization is associated with impairments in function, we know less about patients' functional trajectory following hospitalization. We examined patients' ability to do basic ADLs across pre-admission, admission, and follow-up (discharge or two-weeks post-admission) and determined which factors predicted changes in ADLs at follow-up. A secondary analysis of a small prospective cohort study of older patients (n=83, 50 females, 81 ± 8 years) from the Emergency Department and a Ger

Outcome measures for the study of activities of daily living in vascular dementia.

Decline in functional abilities is a major component of the dementia syndrome. The definition of dementia in the International Classification of Diseases (10th rev.) requires a cognitive impairment sufficient to impair personal activities of daily living (ADL). The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.) also requires cognitive deficits sufficiently severe to cause impairment in occupational or social functioning and must represent a decline from a higher level of functioning. However, the term disability is more appropriate than impairment to describe a loss in activit

Implementation of activities of daily living retraining for individuals in post-traumatic amnesia.

Background Despite evidence of the efficacy of activities of daily living (ADL) retraining during post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) following traumatic brain injury (TBI), utilisation of this intervention in practice is unclear. Utilising an implementation science framework, the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research, this study explored efforts to translate ADL retraining during PTA into the clinical practice of occupational therapists (OTs) working in TBI rehabilitation settings across Australia. Methods Participants were 44 OTs who attended a day-long training workshop that included

Neurofunctional Correlates of Activities of Daily Living in Patients with Posterior Cortical Atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Research on posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) has focused on cognitive decline, especially visual processing deficits. However, few studies have examined the impact of PCA on activities of daily living (ADL) and the neurofunctional and neuroanatomic bases of ADL. OBJECTIVE: To identify brain regions associated with ADL in PCA patients. METHODS: A total of 29 PCA patients, 35 typical Alzheimer's disease (tAD) patients, and 26 healthy volunteers were recruited. Each subject completed an ADL questionnaire that included basic and instrumental subscales (BADL and IADL, respectively), a

Kraepelin's schizophasia: Chaotic speech with preservation of comprehension and activities of daily living.

BACKGROUND: In his classic account of dementia praecox Kraepelin reserved a few pages for a small number of psychotic patients with disorganized speech but who retained the ability to cope with their daily lives. CASE REPORT: A 49-year-old homemaker has been suffering from a continuous hallucinatory-delusional state since she was 24 years old. Her verbal and written language was chaotic and full of neologisms, but fluent and grammatically correct. Speech disorganization was roughly proportional to the need to express ideas and thoughts through creative speech. She followed verbal, written, an

The impact of thalamic stimulation on activities of daily living for essential tremor.

BACKGROUND: Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) of the ventro-intermedius nucleus of the thalamus is the treatment of choice for drug-refractory essential tremor (ET). This study evaluated the effectiveness of thalamic stimulation in improving the patient's quality of life through activities of daily living. METHODS: Sixteen ET patients completed a health questionnaire, the "Tremor Activities of Daily Living Scale" (TADLS) measured by the patient, a 10-item subset of the TADLS measured by the clinician, and the Fahn-Tolosa-Marin tremor rating scale (TRS). Each patient was evaluated with the stimulat

Activity of daily living for Morquio A syndrome.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the activity of daily living (ADL) and surgical interventions in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (MPS IVA). The factor(s) that affect ADL are age, clinical phenotypes, surgical interventions, therapeutic effect, and body mass index. The ADL questionnaire comprises three domains: "Movement," "Movement with cognition," and "Cognition." Each domain has four subcategories rated on a 5-point scale based on the level of assistance. The questionnaire was collected from 145 healthy controls and 82 patients with MPS IVA. The patient cohort consisted of 63 s

Learning Activities of Daily Living from Unobtrusive Multimodal Wearables: Towards Monitoring Outpatient Rehabilitation.

Monitoring activities of daily living (ADLs) for wheelchair users, particularly spinal cord injury individuals is important for understanding the rehabilitation progress, customizing treatment plans, and observing the onset of secondary health conditions. This work proposes an innovative sensory system for measuring and classifying ADLs relevant to secondary health conditions. We systematically evaluated multiple wearable sensors such as pressure distribution mats on the wheelchair seat, accelerometer data from the ear and wrists, and IMU data from the wheelchair wheels to achieve the best uno
