Global warming and biological adaptation: Thermal priming buffers the impact of heatwaves on the reproductive health of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Human excessive exploitation of natural resources has undermined the fragile balance of many ecosystems, accelerating global warming at unprecedented rates. Marine heatwaves (MHWs) threaten organisms, whose reproductive cycle is temperature-dependent. The impact of climate change was evaluated on reproductive health of the gonochoric Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Specimens were divided into a control group, maintained constantly at 17 ± 1 °C, and groups pre-adapted separately to 28, 30 and 32 °C for 2 h, returned to the control temperature for 24 h, and then exposed to heat s

Equivalent Clinical Outcomes but Divergent Biological Adaptation After Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion Versus Cervical Disc Arthroplasty: A Longitudinal MRI Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) can produce comparable short-term clinical outcomes, but their regional effects on cervical muscle morphology are incompletely characterized. This study compared 12-month clinical outcomes and quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) changes after single-level C6-7 ACDF and CDA. Methods: This retrospective longitudinal cohort included 100 age-, sex-, and body mass index-matched patients (50 ACDF and 50 CDA). Neck and arm pain were assessed on 0-10 scales, and the Neck Disability Inde

Comparative analyses of the biological characteristics, fluconazole resistance, and heat adaptation mechanisms of Candida auris and members of the Candida haemulonii complex.

UNLABELLED: Candida auris and the emerging fungal pathogens comprising the Candida haemulonii complex (C. haemulonii and C. duobushaemulonii) are phylogenetically closely related. Notably, each can cause serious nosocomial infection and acquire multidrug resistance. We isolated various strains of C. auris and C. haemulonii complex from patient specimens. The results of growth curve analysis and the spot assay showed that C. auris was the most tolerant to high temperatures, while differences were found among the five strains of the C. haemulonii complex. We selected a representative strain from

A reinforcement learning approach for finding optimal policy of adaptive radiation therapy considering uncertain tumor biological response.

Recent studies have shown that a tumor's biological response to radiation varies over time and has a dynamic nature. Dynamic biological features of tumor cells underscore the importance of using fractionation and adapting the treatment plan to tumor volume changes in radiation therapy treatment. Adaptive radiation therapy (ART) is an iterative process to adjust the dose of radiation in response to potential changes during the treatment. One of the key challenges in ART is how to determine the optimal timing of adaptations corresponding to tumor response to radiation. This paper aims to develop

Multi-Responsive Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Nanocapsules as Biological Environment-Adaptable Drug Carriers for Efficient Cancer Therapy.

Biological environment-adaptable polymer nanocapsules capable of overcoming multiple biological barriers and efficiently realizing on-demand drug delivery to the target tumor cells are highly promising for cancer therapy, but their development remains challenging. Herein, the efficient synthesis of well-defined multi-responsive hydrophilic hairy fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) nanocapsules is reported to address this issue, which have a disulfide-crosslinked fluorescent MIP shell with sialic acid (SA, generally overexpressed on tumor cells)-imprinted binding sites, some poly(me

Fully refractive telecentric f-theta microscope based on adaptive elements for 3D raster scanning of biological tissues.

Various techniques in microscopy are based on point-wise acquisition, which provides advantages in acquiring sectioned images, for example in confocal or two-photon microscopy. The advantages come along with the need to perform three-dimensional scanning, which is often realized by mechanical movement achieved by stage-scanning or piezo-based scanning in the axial direction. Lateral scanning often employs galvo-mirrors, leading to a reflective setup and hence to a folded beam path. In this paper, we introduce a fully refractive microscope capable of three-dimensional scanning, which employs th

Selective activation of antioxidant resources and energy deficiency in Marinesco-Sjögren syndrome fibroblasts as an adaptive biological response to Sil1 loss.

Marinesco-Sjögren syndrome (MSS) is a neuromuscular disease which presents with ataxia, muscle weakness and cataracts. This syndrome is typically caused by mutations in SIL1 gene, an ER co-chaperone that disrupts protein folding. Although it is known that accumulation of misfolded proteins in the ER profoundly affect reduction-oxidation (redox) homeostasis and energy production, the possible role of these processes in MSS was not investigated to date. In patient-derived fibroblasts, both maximal mitochondrial respiration and mitochondrial ATP production rates were diminished, while the glycoly

The influence of sport type and acute stress on biological motion working memory: Adaptive neuro-behavioral performance in open-skill athletes.

BACKGROUND: Biological motion working memory (BMWM) plays a crucial role in athletes' dynamic information processing. Despite evidence of cognitive benefits from athletic training, the combined effects of sport type and acute stress on BMWM remain underexplored. This study investigated behavioral and neural responses during BMWM processing among open-skill athletes, closed-skill athletes, and non-specialized participants, with a focus on the moderating effects of acute stress. METHODS: Sixty-five healthy male participants (21 closed-skill athletes, 18 open-skill athletes, and 26 non-specializ

Risk-adapted therapy and biological heterogeneity in pineoblastoma: integrated clinico-pathological analysis from the prospective, multi-center SJMB03 and SJYC07 trials.

Pineoblastoma is a rare embryonal tumor of childhood that is conventionally treated with high-dose craniospinal irradiation (CSI). Multi-dimensional molecular evaluation of pineoblastoma and associated intertumoral heterogeneity is lacking. Herein, we report outcomes and molecular features of children with pineoblastoma from two multi-center, risk-adapted trials (SJMB03 for patients ≥ 3 years; SJYC07 for patients < 3 years) complemented by a non-protocol institutional cohort. The clinical cohort consisted of 58 patients with histologically diagnosed pineoblastoma (SJMB03 = 30, SJYC07 = 12, non

Ecuador genetic mosaic: biological and adaptive variations across Mestizos, Native Amerindians, and Afro-Ecuadorians. Implications for public health and precision medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding human biological diversity is fundamental to improving health and addressing inequities, yet most genomic and biomedical studies remain focused on European and Asian populations. Latin American groups-particularly mestizos, Native Amerindians, and Afro-descendants-are underrepresented, limiting the applicability of global findings. Ecuador, with its tri-hybrid ancestry shaped by Amerindian, European, and African lineages, provides a valuable model to explore how genetic, environmental, and sociocultural factors jointly influence adaptation and disease. OBJECTIVE: T

Analysis of antibiotic resistance and induced biological adaptations of Aeromonas schubertii isolated from hybrid snakehead (Channa argus♀ × Channa maculata♂).

Aeromonas schubertii has emerged as a significant pathogen in hybrid snakehead (Channa argus♀ × Channa maculata♂), and its antibiotic resistance has become increasingly severe. However, resistance mechanisms in this species are still insufficiently characterized. In this study, we evaluated the antimicrobial susceptibility of 74 A. schubertii isolated from hybrid snakehead. The results showed that sulfonamides had the highest resistance rate, 93.24 % for sulfamethoxazole sodium and 86.49 % for trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, whereas enrofloxacin showed the lowest (5.41 %). A total of 90.54 % of

Biologically adaptive radiotherapy for oropharyngeal Cancer (BARitOne): An R-IDEAL stage 2a-2b technical optimisation, feasibility, and safety study - Study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC), including HPV-positive and negative oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer (OPSCC) is rising. HPV-negative and some HPV-positive OPSCC has poor outcomes. Attempts to uniformly intensify treatment in poor-prognosis HNSCC populations have been unsuccessful. Diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI) has been used during radiotherapy to identify OPSCC which will fail standard radiotherapy. Biologically-adaptive, DW-MRI guided radiotherapy may allow dose-escalated radiotherapy to be delivered to populations predicted to fail standard treatm

Calcium-driven adaptive microbial succession and metabolic shift towards chemical-biological synergistic phosphorus removal in anaerobic-aerobic-anoxic-hydroxyapatite (AOA-HAP) system.

Coupling chemical precipitation with biological processes enhances phosphorus (P) removal, yet the metabolic response of anaerobic-aerobic-anoxic (AOA) process to calcium (Ca2+) regulation remains unclear. This study investigated a novel AOA-hydroxyapatite (AOA-HAP) system under gradient Ca2+/P ratios (0, 7, 10, 20) to elucidate these chemical-biological synergistic mechanisms. Rather than merely acting as a precipitant, elevated Ca2+ induced adaptive microbial responses, substantially enhancing sludge granulation and settleability by upregulating the secretion of structural extracellular poly
