Human adaptative behavior to Antarctic conditions: A review of physiological aspects.

The Antarctic environment induces adaptive metabolic and neuroendocrine changes associated with survival, as well as increased risks to physical and mental health. Circadian disruption has been observed in Antarctic expeditioners. The main consequences appear in quality of sleep, which can affect physical and cognitive performance. Physiological adaptation to cold is mediated by the norepinephrine and thyroid hormones (T3 and 3,5-T2 metabolite). The observed changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis of expeditioners varied according to temperature, photoperiod, time spent in the

Cellular, Molecular, and Physiological Adaptations of Hibernation: The Solution to Environmental Challenges.

Thriving in times of resource scarcity requires an incredible flexibility of behavioral, physiological, cellular, and molecular functions that must change within a relatively short time. Hibernation is a collection of physiological strategies that allows animals to inhabit inhospitable environments, where they experience extreme thermal challenges and scarcity of food and water. Many different kinds of animals employ hibernation, and there is a spectrum of hibernation phenotypes. Here, we focus on obligatory mammalian hibernators to identify the unique challenges they face and the adaptations

Physiological aspects of muscular adaptations to training translated to neuromuscular diseases.

The high level of complexity underlying the heterogeneous pathophysiology of neuromuscular diseases is a fundamental limiting factor in understanding the role of physical activity in their onset and/or clinical evolution. To overcome this difficulty, it is essential to rely on and deep knowledge of the aetiology and on the physiological adaptations to physical exercise, in order to predict how they can impact on the clinical history of each disease. This paper illustrates the possible strategies of intervention in some neuromuscular disorders, through the analysis of their supposed pathogenic

Functional morphology and physiology of slowly adapting pulmonary stretch receptors.

Since the original work by Hering and Breuer (1868) on slowly adapting pulmonary stretch receptors (SARs), numerous studies have demonstrated that these receptors are the lung vagal afferents responsible for eliciting the reflexes evoked by moderate lung inflation. SARs play a role in controlling breathing pattern, airway smooth muscle tone, systemic vascular resistance, and heart rate. Both anatomical and physiological studies support the contention that SARs, by their close association with airway smooth muscle, continuously sense the tension within the myoelastic components of the airways c

Common themes of adaptation to hypoxia. Insights from comparative physiology.

Many vertebrate animals have superior tolerance to environmental hypoxia compared to humans. For example, turtles tolerate an environment of 100% N2 for several hours, without apparent ill effect. This hypoxia tolerance is not limited to heterotherms, as some species of marine mammals, such as the northern elephant seal, may voluntarily dive for periods of up to 2 hours. Torpid bats exhibit prolonged periods of apnea and passive diffusion of oxygen down their trachea through an open glottis supplies a significant amount of the oxygen uptake. The Ruppell's griffon holds the known avian record o

Adaptation of motor control strategies and physiological arousal during repeated blocks of split-belt walking.

Physiological arousal, mediated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS), has been shown to adapt alongside motor control strategies, governed by the central nervous system (CNS), in response to repeated standing perturbations. However, adaptation of the ANS physiological arousal response during repeated exposure to walking challenges remains unknown. This study examines the physiological arousal response (electrodermal activation, EDA) and motor adaptation of gait during a single session of repeated exposure to blocks of split-belt walking. Twenty young adults completed three repeated blocks (3.

Physiological Adaptation Strategy of the Pseudo-Metallophyte Lotus corniculatus L. to Long-Term Metal Contamination.

Lotus corniculatus L. can spontaneously colonize metal-contaminated areas like the old Zn-Pb calamine tailings. This study compared two L. corniculatus ecotypes collected from metal-contaminated (HM) and non-contaminated (NM) sites to identify physiological adaptations to long-term metal exposure. The results indicated that HM ecotype accumulates Zn, Pb, and Cd in shoots without showing any toxic symptoms at the ultrastructural level. The HM ecotype exhibited a different composition of photosynthetic pigments, lower lipid peroxidation, and oxidative stress levels and increased the efficiency o

The change of attention network functions and physiological adaptation during high-altitude hypoxia and reoxygenation.

Previous studies have not reached a definitive conclusion regarding the effect of high-altitude hypoxia and reoxygenation on attention. To clarify the influence of altitude and exposure time on attention and the relations between physiological activity and attention, we conducted a longitudinal study to track attention network functions in 26 college students. The scores on the attention network test and physiological data, including heart rate, percutaneous arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2), blood pressure, and vital capacity in pulmonary function measurement, were collected at five time-poin

Differential and conditional activation of PKC-isoforms dictates cardiac adaptation during physiological to pathological hypertrophy.

A cardiac hypertrophy is defined as an increase in heart mass which may either be beneficial (physiological hypertrophy) or detrimental (pathological hypertrophy). This study was undertaken to establish the role of different protein kinase-C (PKC) isoforms in the regulation of cardiac adaptation during two types of cardiac hypertrophy. Phosphorylation of specific PKC-isoforms and expression of their downstream proteins were studied during physiological and pathological hypertrophy in 24 week male Balb/c mice (Mus musculus) models, by reverse transcriptase-PCR, western blot analysis and M-mode

Adaptation of Muscles With Different Physiological Properties to Resistance Training With and Without Bloodflow Restriction.

BACKGROUND: Low-load bloodflow-restricted (BFR) resistance training (LLBFR-RT) has been shown to elicit muscular hypertrophy comparable with high-load resistance training (HL-RT). We aimed to explore the differential impact of LLBFR-RT and HL-RT on hypertrophy of the triceps surae. HYPOTHESIS: LLBFR-RT would be more effective than HL-RT for soleus muscle hypertrophy. In addition, it was hypothesized that HL-RT would be more effective than LLBFR-RT for the hypertrophy of both gastrocnemii. STUDY DESIGN: An active controlled trial. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 2. Hypophysial angiogenesis decodes annual time and underlies physiological adaptation to seasonal changes in the environment.

Adaptation to annual changes in the environment is controlled by hypophysial hormones. In temperate zones, photoperiod is the primary external cue that regulates annual biological cycles and is translated by the pattern of melatonin secretion acting primarily in the hypophysial pars tuberalis. Angiogenic mechanisms within this tissue contribute to decode the melatonin signal through alternative splicing of the vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) gene in both the pars tuberalis and the capillary loops of the infundibulum. The resulting melatonin-evoked differential productions of VEGF

Physiological mechanisms of adaptation to weightlessness. Data from experiments with animals in earth-orbit biosatellites.

Four experiments were carried out with mammals (white laboratory rats) in Kosmos biosatellites. The experimental results indicate that rather prolonged weightlessness does not cause pathological changes in internal organs. Changes were discovered in the metabolic and hormonal status of the organisms, allowing us to consider an 18-22-day space flight as a moderately stressful activity. Changes in the musculoskeletal system involved atrophy of particular muscle groups, adaptive transformation of the contractile properties of some of them, osteoporosis, and decreased durability of bony tissue. Impact of Climate Change on Farm Animals: Physiological Mechanisms, Health and Productivity, and Integrated Adaptation Strategies.

Climate change is accelerating the frequency of extreme thermal environments, threatening animal welfare, global herd productivity, and agricultural economics. Heat stress-occurring when the ambient temperature-humidity index (THI) surpasses species-specific thermoneutral thresholds-initiates physiological heat-loss cascades (panting, sweating, and peripheral vasodilation), neuroendocrine disruptions (depressed thyroid hormones, elevated glucocorticoids, and insulin dysregulation), mitochondrial oxidative stress, and gut-barrier breakdown. These systemic disruptions drive substantial performan

Adaptation Shapes Local Cortical Reactivity: From Bifurcation Diagram and Simulations to Human Physiological and Pathological Responses.

Human studies employing intracerebral and transcranial perturbations suggest that the input-output properties of cortical circuits are dramatically affected during sleep in healthy subjects as well as in awake patients with multifocal and focal brain injury. In all these conditions, cortical circuits react to direct stimulation with an initial activation followed by suppression of activity (Off-period) that disrupts the build-up of sustained causal interactions typically observed in healthy wakefulness. The transition to this stereotypical response has important clinical implications, being as

Effect of adaptation strategies when feeding fresh cassava foliage on intake and physiological responses of lambs.

The objective of the experiment was to study different adaptation strategies to avoid HCN intoxication when feeding fresh cassava foliage to sheep. Twenty-four Phan Rang lambs (initial weight = 19.6 kg at 5.5 months of age) were used in the study. The four experimental diets contained guinea grass (Panicum maximum) supplemented with concentrate at 1.5% of body weight (BW) as dry matter (DM) (control) or supplemented with fresh cassava foliage (FCF) that was introduced into the diet with an adaptation period of 0 (FCF-0), 7 (FCF-7) or 21 (FCF-21) days before reaching the target feeding level of

Influence of gender and endogenous sex steroids on catecholaminergic structures involved in physiological adaptation to hypoxia.

Mechanisms underlying sex-related differences in adaptation to high altitude were investigated by assessing the turnover of dopamine and noradrenaline in structures of the chemoafferent pathway, i.e. carotid body and brainstem noradrenergic cell groups (A1, A5, A6, A2 to which chemosensory fibres project). The influence of gender was assessed in male and female rats reared at an altitude of 3600 m, whereas the influence of endogenous sex hormones was evaluated by castration. Haematocrit, red blood cell count and plasma erythropoietin levels were lower in females than in males (-5%, -15%, -53%,

[Physiological mechanisms of cardiovascular adaptation to orthostatism. Role of the sympathetic nervous system and pharmacological implications].

The main physiological adaptative systems occurring during orthostatism are discussed. The nervous mechanisms and especially baroreceptor pathways allow a rapid adaptation to the new hemodynamic conditions whereas hormones (mainly vasopressin) are involved later. The role of baroreflex and cardiocirculatory mechanisms is explained by the description of adaptative mechanisms in giraffe, an animal with its brain so far above the ground. The changes in adrenoceptor receptivity and the adaptative homeostatic mechanisms of the autonomic nervous system during orthostatism in human are discussed. The

Tropical vulnerability and temperate resilience: molecular and physiological insights into cold stress adaptation in oil palm.

Cold stress is a major abiotic constraint limiting the growth and productivity of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). Its high sensitivity to chilling causes physiological impairment, metabolic disruption, and reduced oil yield and quality. This review summarizes physiological, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms of cold stress responses in oil palm, with comparative insights from rapeseed and soybean. Key pathways, including Ca2+ signaling, MAPK cascades, and the ICE-CBF/DREB network, coordinate membrane lipid remodeling, osmotic adjustment, antioxidant defense, and hormonal regulation. Key genes
