A 70-year-old male underwent a Transurethral Resection of Prostate for the management of obstructive voiding symptoms. On cystoscopy, papillary frond-like lesions up to 2cm in size were encountered, overlying the right side of the prostatic urethra. Histopathology from the resection revealed clear cell adenocarcinoma (CCA) of the prostatic urethra. Primary clear cell adenocarcinoma of the prostatic urethra is exceedingly rare, with as few as 9 cases reported. We review the literature for its oncogenesis, discuss the histopathological features for diagnosis and report on our surgical management

OBJECTIVE: Modified radical hysterectomy has been advocated for the definitive treatment of patients with cervical adenocarcinoma in situ (ACIS) with positive conization margins due to the risk of a co-existing invasive cervical adenocarcinoma (ICA). We sought to identify patients who can be safely managed with an extrafascial hysterectomy based on predictors of invasion in the conization specimen.
METHODS: Between 1996 and 2010, we identified 33 patients who had definitive surgical management for cervical ACIS following conization with positive margins and/or positive endocervical curettage

Silver binding nucleolar regions (AgNORs) were evaluated in normal endocervix, adenocarcinoma, and its potential precursor, adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS), in an attempt to increase an understanding of the natural history of cervical adenocarcinoma and to identify a marker for abnormal endocervical (atypical glandular) cells which could aid diagnosis and follow up of endocervical lesions. For every 50 cells the mean AgNOR counts were as follows: normal endocervical cells (n = 15) 79.8 (95% Cl 68-91); AIS (n = 20) 200.7 (95% Cl 182-219); and invasive adenocarcinoma (n = 30) 299 (271-328). Collison tumors are rare entities characterized by the juxtaposition of two histological distinct neoplastic populations in the same organ without intermixture of the different malignant components. Due to their infrequency, especially in the digestive tract, limited prior cases have been reported and the pathogenesis, biological behavior and treatment remain controversial. We present the case of a 79-year-old woman with a solid pancreatic mass and a rectosigmoid wall thickening, accompanied by multiple hepatic lesions. These findings suggested a pancreatic neoplasm with liver metastasis and a

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder mucinous adenocarcinoma (GBMAC) is a rare type of gallbladder malignant tumor, whereas little is known regarding the clinicopathological features and surgical outcomes of GBMAC.
METHODS: From January 2000 till December 2015, 54 GBMAC patients who underwent curative-intent surgical resection at our institution were retrospectively reviewed. We compared the clinicopathological features and surgical outcomes of these GBMAC patients with a relatively large cohort of surgically resected conventional gallbladder adenocarcinoma (GBAC) patients without existence of mucinous co

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the impact of screening modality on the detection of cervical adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) and adenocarcinoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of patients with AIS or adenocarcinoma who had undergone routine screening with cytology and high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) cotesting between January 2007 and December 2017. Patients were stratified into 3 groups by screening test results: (1) HPV positive with abnormal cytology (HPV+/Pap+), (2) HPV negative with abnormal cytology (HPV-/Pap+), and (3) HPV positive with norma

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The familial aggregation of Barrett's esophagus, adenocarcinoma of the esophagus, and adenocarcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction, jointly termed familial Barrett's esophagus, may represent a complex genetic trait. The aim of this study was to determine the proportion of patients with these diseases who have familial Barrett's esophagus.
METHODS: Information on gastroesophageal reflux symptoms, known risk factors for Barrett's esophagus, and family history of Barrett's esophagus and cancers, was collected at six hospitals using a structured questionnaire from probands

Over time the relative distribution of cancers of the proximal digestive tract has changed. Squamous cell carcinomas of the esophagus have become less common, while numbers of adenocarcinomas have greatly increased. This shift most likely reflects an increase in the incidence of gastroesophageal reflux. Moreover, there is a decline in the incidence of distal gastric cancer, which in turn may be related to Heliobacter pylori eradication. Simultaneously, there is a time trend toward a more proximal localization of gastric cancer. If the above-mentioned etiopathologic links are correct, this coul

BACKGROUND: Given the subtle pathological signs of adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) and minimally invasive adenocarcinoma (MIA), effective differentiation between the two entities is crucial. However, it is difficult to predict these conditions using preoperative computed tomography (CT) imaging. In this study, we investigated whether histological diagnosis of AIS and MIA using quantitative three-dimensional CT imaging analysis could be predicted.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the images and histopathological findings of patients with lung cancer who were diagnosed with AIS or MIA between

We describe the different clinical presentations, radiology, histology and management of this unique, highly aggressive disease. Clinical presentation of appendicitis may not just be appendicitis. Appendiceal tumors must always be considered in the differential diagnosis. Dedicated radiology and histological examination in addition to aggressive surgical and oncological input improve outcome.

Pulmonary enteric adenocarcinoma (PEAC) is a rare subtype of non-small cell lung cancer with morphological and immunohistochemical features that are nearly indistinguishable from those of metastatic colorectal carcinoma. Owing to these overlapping features, diagnosis and treatment of PEAC can present a clinical challenge. We report the case of a 78-year-old man with synchronously diagnosed locally advanced pulmonary adenocarcinoma of the left lower lobe and localized right lower lobe PEAC. These malignancies exhibited distinct tumor molecular profiles and differed in their kinetic response to

This is an unusual presentation of a rare subtype of endometrial adenocarcinoma (villoglandular papillary carcinoma, VGPC) in a 71-year-old woman, which was initially diagnosed on cervical biopsy as being primary cervical VGPC. Loop excision failed to show any evidence of residual disease. Subsequent hysterectomy revealed a localized villoglandular carcinoma involving the uterine fundus and invading the inner one-third of the myometrium, the background endometrium was atrophic. The remaining cervix contained a focus of papillary forming endometrial type adenocarcinoma involving the surface epi

We report a rare case of pulmonary enteric adenocarcinoma (PEA) exhibiting a immunohistochemical feature of CK7/CK20 double-negativity by evaluating the transformation zone between PEA and conventional pulmonary adenocarcinoma (CPA). A 75-year-old man was found to have a mass, 40 mm in diameter, in the right lower lobe on chest computed tomography, and underwent right lower lobectomy. Histologically, the tumor was composed of a PEA and CPA component. The dominant PEA component had medium to large complex glands with tall columnar cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm and brush-border. The CPA comp

A 76-year-old man with sigmoid colon cancer and gastric cancer was referred to our hospital because of severe anemia. Computed tomography revealed peritoneal dissemination and lung metastasis. For diagnoses of cStage Ⅳa sigmoid cancer and cStage ⅣB gastric cancer, palliative laparoscopic sigmoidectomy and distal gastrectomy were planned in order to avoid tumor hemorrhage and intestinal obstruction. Intraoperative findings suggested cancer dissemination on the pelvic peritoneum, thus laparoscopic Hartmann's procedure and distal gastrectomy were performed. The final diagnosis was sigmoid colon c

The present study reports a rare case of synchronous colorectal mucinous adenocarcinoma (CMAC) and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). A 61-year-old man complained of hematochezia for half a month. Colonoscopy and biopsy in a local hospital revealed mucinous adenocarcinoma in the sigmoid colon, and a subsequent abdominal computed tomography examination in Ren Ji Hospital (Shanghai, China) identified an unexpectedly hypovascular lesion in the body and tail of the pancreas, in addition to a mass in the colon. The patient then underwent combined surgery consisting of a distal pancreaticosple

BACKGROUND: Anal adenocarcinoma (AA) is a rare malignancy with decreased survival compared to rectal adenocarcinoma (RA). However, AA continues to be treated with similar algorithms compared to rectal cancer with minimal data regarding the efficacy of these treatment algorithms.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients with non-metastatic AA at a single tertiary-care institution from 1995 to 2020. This cohort was matched 2:1 to a group of RA patients for comparison. The primary outcome of interest was overall survival rates.
RESULTS: Sixteen patients with stages I-III AA were matche

We report a case in which a vaginal adenocarcinoma was discovered in a 67-year-old woman 16 years after hysterectomy for cervical adenocarcinoma in situ. Both the vaginal and cervical lesions exhibited morphologic and immunohistochemical (CDX2-positive) features of intestinal differentiation. Linear array human papillomavirus genotyping demonstrated the vaginal adenocarcinoma to contain human papillomavirus 45. We believe the vaginal adenocarcinoma to be related to the cervical adenocarcinoma in situ and to represent recurrence of this. This is an extremely rare phenomenon with, as far as we a

A 73-year-old woman underwent upper endoscopic screening that revealed a 30-mm superficial elevated lesion in the anterior wall of the upper gastric body. The lesion had a whitish color and coarse granular surface in conventional white light endoscopy. Magnifying narrow-band imaging indicated irregular microvascular and microsurface patterns within a demarcation line. The microvessels had a distorted polygonal shape within the area surrounded by the marginal crypt epithelium. The patient underwent endoscopic resection. Histological examination of the resected specimen showed a very well- to we

Lung cancer screening has improved mortality among high-risk smokers but has coincidentally detected a fraction of nonprogressive adenocarcinoma historically classified as bronchoalveolar carcinoma (BAC). In the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) the majority of BAC-comprising 29% of computed tomography-detected stage I lung adenocarcinoma-were considered overdiagnosis after extended follow-up comparison with the control arm. In the current classification, adenocarcinoma in situ and minimally invasive adenocarcinoma have replaced BAC but together comprise only ∼5% of stage I lung adenocarcin
